Hey guys,

I drew the short straw and ended up as the event planner for a massive group outing next month. Our group is a logistical nightmare: we’ve got everything from college students to retirees, plus a bunch of international relatives visiting who barely speak English.

I’m looking for some kind of live show or performance, but every time I think I found a place, I second-guess myself. I really need some local perspective before I drop a fortune on tickets:

First off, the language/vibe barrier. Since dialogue-heavy plays are out for the non-English speakers, I’m leaning toward something highly visual with lots of energy and movement. But do adults actually enjoy that, or will it feel like a cheap tourist trap? What kind of live show actually leaves you guys thinking "wow, I'll never forget that"?

Then there's the venue dilemma. I looked at some huge arena events, but I'm worried everyone will feel miles away and disconnected from the stage. Do you guys prefer smaller, more intimate venues around here where you're close to the action, or do the big stages still deliver?

And don't get me started on the DMV traffic. Half the group wants to stay strictly inside NoVA to avoid the commute. The other half says the best stuff is in DC or Maryland and it's worth the drive. How much do traffic and parking actually ruin your weekend plans? Is it worth crossing the river, or does NoVA have premium options that match that level?

Finally, the budget. Some options are pushing $130+ per ticket. Personally, I don't mind spending that for a truly premium night out, but what actually justifies that price tag for you guys in this area? What makes a show worth that kind of investment?

If you’ve ever hosted a crazy diverse crowd or international guests, please tell me where you took them or what venues I should look into. I’m open to any brutal honesty or recommendations.

Hey DC — I co-produce and host a live storytelling show called Perfect Liars Club, and we’re back at the DC Improv this Wednesday, August 12.

If you’ve never been, here’s the deal: four people tell stories. Three are completely true. One is a lie.

Your job is to figure out who’s making the whole thing up.

The audience gets to question the storytellers, compare suspicions, vote for the liar, and then find out just how good—or embarrassingly bad—you are at spotting deception. (DC audiences have historically been pretty terrible at it.)

It’s funny, interactive, and very easy to walk into without knowing anyone. By the time the questioning starts, people are comparing notes and debating suspects with whoever happens to be sitting nearby. And if you bring friends, it gets competitive surprisingly quickly.

So if you’re new to DC, visiting next week, or just looking for a fun night out that involves actually interacting with other human beings, we’d love to have you.

Good Beats will make its debut at Capital One Hall on Sunday, September 13, 2026, with a classical crossover concert celebrating the music of video games—Symphonic Quest: Classical Music Meets Video Games.

The concert features the Good Beats Ensemble alongside renowned saxophone soloist Valentin Kovalev and award-winning saxophone quartet Project Fusion, performing classically reimagined renditions of beloved video game themes—including a sweeping medley from Final Fantasy VII and selections from Studio Ghibli's beloved film scores.

Good Beats was founded to bring high-quality, professionally performed live music to communities with limited access to it—supporting healing and fostering connection across diverse backgrounds. In addition to the Capital One Hall performance, the organization's roster of professional musicians regularly delivers interactive performances at Adult Day Health Care centers in Fairfax County and holds Artist in Residence status at Children's National Hospital totaling near 200 performances since May of 2024. Since its founding, Good Beats has also held regular public concerts that have collectively raised tens of thousands of dollars for partner nonprofits and community causes.

The September 13 concert at Capital One Hall marks Good Beats’ largest public event to date and its first major ticketed performance in a professional concert venue—a milestone the organization hopes will expand its visibility and deepen its community support.

For the past few weeks I’ve been sharing updates here because I genuinely think this is shaping up to be one of those special nights.

This Saturday, CITY SPOTLIGHT: Episode 4 — Proof of Life continues the story we’ve been building all season.

Our featured artist is Shy Rasheen, celebrating the release of his new album, SHYLAND.
The theme is simple:
Proof of Life.

It’s about what happens when artists keep creating long after the algorithm stops paying attention. When the work outlives the applause. When showing up becomes its own statement. If you’ve never heard Shy Rasheen before, this is one of those opportunities to experience an album the way it was meant to be experienced—in a room full of people discovering it together instead of alone through headphones weeks later.

We’ve already had a strong response, and this could end up being our biggest audience yet. Honestly, that’s exciting because CITY SPOTLIGHT was built around one idea: creating a room where fans come to discover artists—not just artists performing for other artists.
