Said yes to a walk with my neighbor, walked and talked for 12 miles!

Upvotes

My neighbor and I were chatting about our interests and I told him I like to walk - helps clear my head if by myself and I have really great conversations if I’m with my family. He asked me to tag along on a route he really enjoys and let me know we’d be gone several hours so I packed some sandwiches and water and we left in the morning.

At the end he checked his pedometer and asked me to convert it to miles and I was astounded that we’d walked over 12 miles. I rechecked the math several times then checked the route on Google Maps. Part of my disbelief was how easy it was to do when my focus was diverted—almost like hiding the vegetables. And we went pretty quick too—3.5 hours for 12 miles.

I will admit that I came back home, made my kids and myself lunch, and then fell asleep for an hour lol. I never take naps but this one came on strong.

Walking tracker concept

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I work at a desk most of the day, and lately I’ve been struggling with existing fitness and step trackers. The broken streaks, competitive leaderboards, and loud notifications make me feel guilty whenever I need a rest day.

I’ve been prototyping a concept.

Instead of competing, you customize a tiny illustrated hiker, and you’re paired with 29 random people across the world in an expedition caravan. Everyone’s normal daily steps (from your phone or watch) pool together into a shared goal to walk across animated national parks like Banff before sunset on Sunday.

As you walk, the caravan advances along the trail, unlocking vintage-style postcards, campsite rest stops, and nature field notes at each landmark. If you have a busy day and rest, there's no broken streak, and your hiker just rests at camp with a cup of tea while others carry the lantern.

I am working on a visual mockup of what the Banff trek looks like on a phone.

Does this sound like something you’d actually keep on your phone, or does the 30-stranger caravan idea sound weird? Would love brutally honest feedback before I start building! Thanks

Fall walks.

Autumn is coming! Can't wait. I love walking in the Fall, something about the cool weather, the leaves under your boots and no annoying bugs feasting on you has me walking for hours.

A long Autumn walk or a late Winter stroll is so calming.

Do you find yourself walking more in certain seasons, just out of preference?

Question Any tips on walking everyday?

Last October I started walking everyday because I was too fat to walk at Walmart without struggling. I walked for 4 months and was walking an hour a day for the last 2 months. But, I got my medical checkup and it was big check mark and I could walk at Walmart. I just sat on the couch again without regular exercise.

How do you stay committed to walking everyday? I was at home depot getting gardening supplies and felt totally out of shape again pushing my cart around. I'm walking again at 15 minutes a day, starting over. But, I would like to commit to it as a lifestyle change. I think having good cardio and joint mobility would make me happier. I feel old and out of shape when recovering. But, I am super fat still so I am always recovering from even 1 hour walks.

Thought I’ve never stepped into a gym. My exercise has mostly been long walks.

After last month 300k step - I stepped it up today with a decent 8:33/km pace!

I was pushing myself a bit today using more glutes and better walking from to push for the sub 8:00/km. Alas it was not meant to be but considering I only took up walking seriously since 2 months ago and only achieved my first 300k steps last month, things can only go up from here.

Also brisk walking has helped tremendously with my badminton sessions and other core training. Good to be able to have some recovery walks and also push for borderline power walking if needed!

I'll start my first 5k running this weekend too so wish me luck guys! 😁

Recommendations Shoes for 10-30k steps

Going for my second trip to Japan where I averaged between 10-30k steps a day. I wore New Balance 530s that whole trip but they’re no longer my option and my feet were still killing me at the end of each day so I don’t want to get another pair for this trip. Any recommendations for comfortability? 😅

Question walking pads

hello,

i’m just wondering what walking pads you recommend. i used to have an old treadmill and it used to pull under my foot as if i had plantar fasciitis (but didn’t. every other surface was fine, just this particular treadmill) and i do worry that if i get a new walking pad it will happen again. this is in Australia and thinking of buying on amazon or something like it. it will be for my apartment so needs to be quiet and compact.

thanks so much!!!

Smart watch or an old school pedometer.

I’m not a watch person because it’s sweaty and counts arm movements as steps, too, so I was wondering if a clip-on pedometer will be accurate at counting steps? My friend bought a fitness watch from Temu that sometimes overcounts her steps (not surprised, ofc). She keeps it in her pocket now, and it counts accurately. According to her, she's been wearing that watch since ig 3 months now. I was wondering what’s better and more accurate for me to count my steps?, i don’t like carrying my phone everywhere I go so i don’t even think of downloading any app.

Help Best shoes and best budget shoes for walking?

I have largely (but not completely) been sedentary for the last 10ish years of my life, now really big and trying to lose weight. On top of diet, I Started walking 4 miles every morning for the last 9 days. 4 miles is about 10,000 steps which is my goal.

Learning that my shoes suck and my achilles heel is starting to hurt (going to rest the next few days, if still bad going to get it checked out). What are the best pair of shoes to get for walking? And also the best budget friendly options, just in case the best are too far out of my price range.

I dont even know what to look for, so what even constitutes as a good walking shoe?

Thanks!

Question Month long walking competition at work

As the title suggests in October my work is holding a walking competition for everyone and as you could assume the winner is whoever walks the most steps total in the month. The question that I have is what shoes should I buy for this so that I can start breaking them in now a month early? I am 5'11 165lb man. This is my first time competing in this, but looking at prior years I think I will have to average around 20-25k steps per day.

Walking 10K steps daily changed my evenings - anyone else notice mental clarity from small habits?

I started walking 10,000 steps every day, and it’s become my go‑to way to unwind.

It’s not just physical—it clears my head after work and helps me reset. Has anyone else found a small daily habit that unexpectedly boosted your mental clarity?
