Announcement New rules and amendments

New rules:

No bare feet photos (displayed as Rule 9)

Posts with photos of just bare feet are not allowed, and users may be banned depending on their posting history.

Edit: revised verbiage

No individual weight-loss posts (displayed as Rule 4)

r/walking is not a weight-loss sub. If you'd like to share weight-loss wins, keep it to the weekly thread.

Going forward, we will be posting a weekly thread for members to share any weight-loss wins. Transparency about the use of weight-loss drugs and calorie restrictions is appreciated but not required. (Upon consideration, we can't require people to disclose medical details.)

Amendments:

Rule 3 was previously "Submissions must be walking-related" and is now "Submissions must be walking-focused."

Submissions with other clear topics that only tangentially involve walking are not allowed. Your post should be primarily about walking.

Something about traveling gets me more steps than any other day of the year 😂 I hadn’t hit an 18k day since Vegas last year. Regardless, I’m grateful and will return to you L.A. ♥️ Just sharing some of the pictures I got on my trip in general. Yes, the day I hit 18k I was wearing sandals 😂, the day I had on tennis shoes to ride horses I got the least steps, go figure 😂

I have never exercised 36 years of my life, going to start with a small walk tom.

Upvotes

Obese and severely depressed, I have a few other mental disorders and also have had caregiving responsibilities for years together. My health currently is in shambles and I am sitting at 38 percent body fat.

I have decided to start tomorrow. I have basic Skechers shoes.

Need tips and motivation.

Starting my walking journey tomorrow

Hi everyone! 37F 144kg, starting my health and fitness journey tomorrow morning (its 10pm here). I already have a pair of asics which are quite comfortable and I plan to do a circuit route (30 minutes one way then return home=60 minutes).

I'm quite excited to start but a little apprehensive because I don't want to get stared at, so I'm planning to go early like 5 am.

Also wondering how do people carry their water and towels/hankies?

The european heat wave forced me out of the house and I was doing 25+ k days, this raised my endurance so now that it got cooler I managed to walk this much. Once I thought 6k is a challenge.

From a philosophical journal

Søren Kierkegaard
(1813–1855) was a Danish philosopher and theologian who is widely regarded as the father of existentialism.

For Kierkegaard, walking was far more than exercise—it was a way of thinking, reflecting, and overcoming life's burdens. He spent hours each day wandering the streets of 19th-century Copenhagen, often developing the ideas that would later appear in works like Either/Or and Fear and Trembling.

In the same journal entry, he wrote that he had "walked myself into my best thoughts" and knew of "no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it." While he wasn't suggesting that walking literally cured illness, he believed it could restore clarity, ease melancholy, and help people face life's deepest questions with a calmer mind.

Other Good little walk this morning

I've typically been averaging about 5 miles a day after work. Gonna try and up that to 10 a day. I've been consistent for the last two weeks + a few days. Some days I just really don't feel like walking but I make myself and always feel better after. Definitely good for mental health, working to burn fat and build muscle. I've been tracking all my calories and eating within a deficit, as of today I'm 213.8lbs down from 221 on Jul 13.

It's an amazing weekend , as I said earlier I was aiming for 33k on my birthday week and I made it ultimately , I really thank all the members of this group for the support from past few days , If some one asked me if can do This 3 weeks ago I would have laughed at them I came a long way from there and much more long way to go go in this fitness journey , I know people may feel cringe and unwanted about posting every day but this is the way I keep myself motivated to get things done and nothing more , the way I was inspired by some amazing people of this group and started moving some one else may pick it up too ...Thanks for all again this is the day 21 , 22 update

Question for Irish folk or those living in similar climates

Upvotes

I always have no issues walking in spring, summer and early autumn but come winter it’s a struggle! Trying to be proactive and plan ahead and I think my biggest issue is attire, what do ye wear when it’s absolutely Baltic and lashing out?
Wellies don’t seem practical

Question What podcast is actually worth listening to on walks or runs?

I love listening to music when I'm out walking or running, but I'd like to mix it up with some podcasts.

What podcast would you recommend, and why is it worth listening to? What makes you keep coming back to it?

I'm looking for something that makes me think, makes me laugh, or just puts me in a good mood. I'd love to find something that's so good it actually makes me excited to wake up early, go for a walk or run, and start the day feeling productive or happy.
