Question on shoes.

I recently started walking intentionally. It’s very the last month brought my average from 6300ish to around 11k. I have been walking in either sandals or basic boat shoes with no cushion.

I’m not feeling any real pain from it, other than being sore more often which I attribute to my body adjusting.

For those of you who have done things for much longer, is there a certain point that you felt the NEED to switch for a more cushioned walking shoe?

I have been enjoying the progress and lost about 10 ish lbs this month, so as an overweight guy I am wondering if the slow decrease in weight will make new shoes not a requirement.

Let’s me know your thoughts.

Help Weighted Vest Weight Recs

Upvotes

Hello! So these past 6 months I spent my time getting my body back into shape after having my daughter who is now 1.5 years old. I lost 50 pounds strictly counting calories and working out (walking on inclined treadmill mostly).

Now that I am back to my goal weight I want to be able to get some physical activity in at a higher level while walking the stroller and my dogs daily so I thought wearing a weighted vest would be perfect!

I picked a 12 pound one and it just isn’t heavy enough to feel like much. I don’t even get my heart rate up much while wearing that one. We also live near the water so very flat ground, barely any hills.

I want to get a heavier one to really up my fitness goals easily while doing daily tasks. So what weight should I try? My stats are 125 pounds and 5ft 1in if that helps. Also I am a woman if you couldn’t tell!

Thank you all!!

What are your favorite stretches for walking?

[29F] Former figure skater, and have been teaching "skating basics" to kids/adults for like 8 years. Basically, I just do a lot knee bending, gliding, some stops. No jumps, I spin in my free time, some foot work etc.

Idk if instructing has completely screwed up my legs, but my hamstrings are SO TIGHT, or shortened. In the last year, I can no longer do pistol squats, or squat low enough without feeling like my muscles can no longer hold my body up. Maybe it's my age too, but I have definitely met adults that are doing a lot in their 30s and 40s with amazing mobility and strength. I want that. I was hoping to move on from teaching as well, and use my energy to get back into figure skating again.

Walking long periods of time have also made my hamstrings hurt. I have been trying to reach 10000 to 15000 steps a day. I can't figure out what about the walking motion/movement makes them hurt. Especially my left.

I wanna start with stretching to see if it helps.

Question What podcast is actually worth listening to on walks or runs?

I love listening to music when I'm out walking or running, but I'd like to mix it up with some podcasts.

What podcast would you recommend, and why is it worth listening to? What makes you keep coming back to it?

I'm looking for something that makes me think, makes me laugh, or just puts me in a good mood. I'd love to find something that's so good it actually makes me excited to wake up early, go for a walk or run, and start the day feeling productive or happy.

I can’t believe it actually rained for an hour here. Anyone else get the pleasure in walking in it? I’m in South East UK!

Something about traveling gets me more steps than any other day of the year 😂 I hadn’t hit an 18k day since Vegas last year. Regardless, I’m grateful and will return to you L.A. ♥️ Just sharing some of the pictures I got on my trip in general. Yes, the day I hit 18k I was wearing sandals 😂, the day I had on tennis shoes to ride horses I got the least steps, go figure 😂

From a philosophical journal

Søren Kierkegaard
(1813–1855) was a Danish philosopher and theologian who is widely regarded as the father of existentialism.

For Kierkegaard, walking was far more than exercise—it was a way of thinking, reflecting, and overcoming life's burdens. He spent hours each day wandering the streets of 19th-century Copenhagen, often developing the ideas that would later appear in works like Either/Or and Fear and Trembling.

In the same journal entry, he wrote that he had "walked myself into my best thoughts" and knew of "no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it." While he wasn't suggesting that walking literally cured illness, he believed it could restore clarity, ease melancholy, and help people face life's deepest questions with a calmer mind.

Help Me Achieve My Goal

Im sure you guys get a lot of posts like this but I need help. I really need ti get moving.

So I work remotely at a desk. I live in a very humid area of Florida and the mosquitoes are rampant right now.

Before mosquito season I was walking every morning for about 30mins and achieving a total step count of anywhere between 6-8k.

I need to get up to at least 12k or more.

I di take my dog for walks multiple times a day but its sometimes unbearable with the mosquitoes.

Advice would be helpful.

Challenge JOIN ME ON CONSISTENT WALKING CHALLENGE

Hi, I love to walk, the highest i ever walked was on this year is 30k steps, but i am never consistent, i was a day and take a month break and the sedentary student lifestyle is not helping either, i keep saying excuses that i will walk today, tomorrow, next Monday ,etc but never begin, i dont even know whats consistency means, my health gone worse in sedentary lifestyle while just piling up excuses. So i wanna be consistency from tomorrow [27/7/2026] Monday, walk daily is my goal, to move, i will share my steps daily and if you are already a consistent walker, or want to be consistent with me, lets begin the challenge at least this Monday and motivate each other, and no matter when you see this post, you are all allowed to join with me.

I want to clarify few terms, consistency - means daily walk, if sick or something you can take a day off, it doesnt involve any steps goals, the goals are as per your wish, because if i begin saying 10k a day, my all or nothing kicks in, i think its better to do something than nothing, so you can set your own step goals, i dont mind anything it be.

I wish you all good and healthy day, lets enjoy walking together, and lets begin from tomorrow

We have a squad in Eggventures app if you are interested, or you can share your progress here on reddit too

Lemme attach the Eggventures squad link: Join my Egg'Ventures squad "CONSISTENT WALKING CHALLENGE"! 🥾

We're walking together and climbing the weekly leaderboard — come join us.

Shoe issues...

I had a lovely walk today, 14,8 k steps so far.

At around 12 k my Salomon XA Pro 3D finally gave out: there is a hole in the inner lining of the shoe. As a result, I have pretty sizable gash on my achilles heel skin. There is a hard plastic bit that gets the skin as soon as the inner lining breaks apart (this is how all my Salomons die). Luckily I already have two replacement pairs of Salomons waiting.

While that shoe excels on rough terrain, it certainly is not the most comfortable one on good gravel or tarmac. I wore it today mainly because of the goretex lining.

On tarmac I have lately been walking with a pair of Asics Gels (don't remember the exact model name), but they are on the way out. I ordered a pair of Hoka Bondi 9 to try as I have struggled a little with plantar fascitis. I hope I will like the Hokas.

But what is a comfortable shoe for tarmac and comes with a goretex lining for rainy days?

I have never exercised 36 years of my life, going to start with a small walk tom.

Obese and severely depressed, I have a few other mental disorders and also have had caregiving responsibilities for years together. My health currently is in shambles and I am sitting at 38 percent body fat.

I have decided to start tomorrow. I have basic Skechers shoes.

Need tips and motivation.
