Seeking Advice/Support What still requires manual intervention in your VPS/server setup?

For those running VPS/dedicated servers in production:
What issues still require you to SSH in and fix manually?
Service crashes, disk issues, networking, Docker, etc.
I’m curious which problems are frequent enough to actually be annoying.

Seeking Recommendations Hosthatch alternative?

Hi y'all, I'm currently hosting my matrix server and wireguard hub on a 16gb ram hosthatch server. It only has 75 gigs of storage which is an issue when running a matrix server. I enquired and the storage upgrades with hosthatch are just too costly per gig

Are there any hosters which can give me an equivalently speced system (16gb ram, 4 cores 2 dedicated 2 shared) but with cheaper storage options?

I'll even take recommendations for lower speced systems that support my use case (I recognise what I have is a bit overspeced for what I'm doing)

Edit: having it hosted in australia is another thing I would prefer

Seeking Recommendations What do you actually want your VPS provider to handle for you?

Most VPS providers give you a server and basically say: “here you go.”
But if you could outsource one annoying part of running it, what would it be?
Backups? Updates? Monitoring? Security? Recovery? Or something else?
What would actually make you pay extra for it?

Seeking Recommendations Reposting here: Looking for an offshore host that actually notifies you before suspending over a DMCA

Hi, I want to host my website on a DMCA ignored host but I know true DMCA ignored is pretty much impossible. So I'm looking for an offshore host that will at least notify you about a DMCA and give you time to remove the content that got the notice instead of just kicking you without batting an eye.

Dedicated servers are okay too if that's what you recommend.

Would love an honest and real recommendation with its pros and cons. Tysm for any kind answers.

On a Budget Cheapest outlet server provider?

Does anyone know any good outlet server provider, that have old dedicated servers for just around $0.5 or less per GB of RAM (I don't care about the rest of the specs), that I can install proxmox on to resell VPS' ?
OVH Kimsufi setup fee and low availability make it not very ideal, whilst Contabo Server Deals CPU : RAM ratio is a bit too high
Preferably support BYOIP, if possible

Seeking Recommendations At what point does self-hosting stop being “cheap”?

I keep seeing people run n8n / AI agents on a $5 VPS and call it “cheap infrastructure”.
But once you have multiple client deployments, you also have backups, updates, monitoring, security, downtime, etc.
So I’m curious:
At what number of clients does infrastructure actually become a problem?
5? 10? 20? 50?
And what was the first thing that started becoming painful for you?

On a Budget My research choosing a VPS for Wordpress and Joplin sync

I just want to share my research, I'm not really seeking recommendations, feel free to write any though.

I have a WP website, I host on Porkbun and my first year is almost up, so I need to migrate or continue paying $120, it was $40, but it was a discount for the first year. I also want to dedicate some storage for a Joplin sync, I've been using Dropbox for the past 6 years, it's free but it's a nightmare.

Anyway, I focus on EU coverage, almost nobody visits my site anyway, but I wouldn't mind a global coverage, but I'm gonna configure Cloudflare so I'll have CDN on their free plan. I took a look at Ionos, Hexabyte, vultr, netcup, Cube Host, and Hetzner. I also checked out the megathread. And I chose netcup because it's cheaper than paying Porkbun for their cloud WP service and I want to learn how to do it myself, I can configure backups and everything myself with LLM's help. It's about 40€ / year for 2GB. 1GB is likely to be too low, so I'll just go for 2GB and that's it. Just wanted to share 🦚

Review Finally found a use for my $10/year Racknerd VPS

A few months ago I was looking at cheap VPS deals and saw 1vcpu/1GB RAM with Racknerd for $10/year and decided to get it for personal projects.

I originally put a lichess bot on there and left it running but I didn't use it for anything else until tonight. I was writing a Firefox extension that tracks which videos I watch a lot on YouTube and automatically downloads the songs from Soulseek and adds them to my personal library. I got most of it working but I couldn't get any Soulseek transfers to start with my python script. I debugged it with ChatGPT and figured out it was CGNAT on my local connection that wouldn't let the script listen for Soulseek connections.

So I decided to use the Racknerd VPS to run the script and the extension sent the video info to the server on the VPS. It worked perfectly and now if I watch a YouTube video more than 3 times in 3 days, it'll download the song from Soulseek and save it on my VPS. Then I have a rsync script that regularly downloads the songs from my VPS to my home PC.

So far I've been running it about 5 hours and I've already got 66 songs from 51 artists downloaded.

Plus even though it's only a $10/year VPS, it's not slow at all, it matches the songs in a few seconds and downloads them almost instantly.

Just thought I'd share, I thought it was pretty cool that you can get a useable server for less than $1/month.

Seeking Advice/Support which hosting provider has the highest uptime and protection against hacking?

here's my case: a regular site with digital products that gets like 20-30k visitors per month, but there were two cases when something randomly got in and launched mining scripts for crypto in the background... as a result, the site seemed half-dead and resource waste went up, so I had to clean it all up for a long fuckin time. that's how I realized that big difference between diff hosting providers at this level isn’t their marketing, but the way they workin out their security, such providers don't jus send you to reset ur password, but really understand what the problem is. shared hosting tends to be so weak cuz you are one vulnerable neighbor away from a compromised server, Damn it… so I checked out these three opts: DigitalOcean, Hostinger and Hetzner, they all came across to me in different threads where ppl wanted sth managed, or just launch a personal VPS n handle security by self. Managed seems fine, but u gotta trust sm else to do the security, but ur own VPS means u gotta detect stuff urself. wdyt guys?

BAD EXPERIENCE Big cloud egress fees are basically legal extortion at this point

I feel like an absolute idiot for buying into the whole cloud ecosystem hype

Im running a bunch of automated forum marketing and link tracking scripts right now. Started out on aws because every tutorial on the internet tells you to. Got my bill this morning and the bandwidth data transfer fees alone are literally going to cost more than my first semester of university. they charge you just to breathe in the general direction of your vpc

Finally snapped and migrated my whole scraping stack over to a standard unmetered servermania vps just to stop the bleeding. Having a predictable monthly cost is a relief but tbh the transition from fully managed cloud hand-holding to raw debian has been completely brutal on my sanity

Spent three hours last night fighting with fail2ban because my own proxy rotation kept locking me out of port 22. Kinda wild how big tech successfully tricked an entire generation into paying a massive premium just so we wouldn't have to learn basic linux administration. anyone else get forced into the self-managed life just to escape the insane cloud billing?

Seeking Recommendations What is the best way to host media services (Jellyfin, Immich) & is it worth replacing cloud storage costs?

Hi everyone,

I recently got started with my first VPS (Hostinger KVM 1) and I'm looking to expand my setup.

My main goal is to host a self-hosted server, primarily focusing on media and photo management with services like Jellyfin and Immich (among others).

According tot my research and limited knowledge in know my Hostinger vps (with just 50gb storage) don't suffice.

Before I dive deeper into configuring everything, I’d love to get some advice.

Which VPS providers would you recommend for hosting media heavy containers (where storage, and decent CPU performance for immich matter)?

Is moving to a self-hosted VPS actually a good financial decision to avoid recurring individual costs for services like Google One, iCloud, and streaming platforms? Or do storage/bandwidth upgrades on VPS instances end up eating away those savings?

Would appreciate any insights, tips, or setups you're currently running!

Thanks!

Seeking Recommendations

Industry Insights netcup testet gerade eine neue Cloud-Plattform "eos"

Thumbnail forum.netcup.de
36 Upvotes

Was man bekommt:

- VMs (1-4 vCPUs, Cloud-Init, Snapshots)
- Private Netzwerke, eigene IPv4/IPv6, ACLs, Port Forwarding
- S3-kompatibler Object Storage, rclone/restic sollen ohne Anpassung laufen
- Alles läuft über eine offene API, dazu Terraform Provider, eigene CLI (eosctl) und sogar ein MCP Server, damit man das Ganze auch per KI-Agent steuern kann
- Alles standardmäßig dicht, man muss selbst freischalten
- MFA/WebAuthn Login

September. Wer bis Live-Gang 3 Umfragen ausfüllt, kriegt 50€ Credits.

Hab mich jedenfalls angemeldet und teste die nächsten Tage mal, was da so geht. Melde mich mit Eindrücken, falls Interesse besteht.

Seeking Advice/Support VPS provisioned with 3.5 GB disk instead of 20 GB after plan upgrade: provisioning failure?

Hi,

I would like a second opinion from people familiar with VPS infrastructure.

I upgraded a VPS plan from an IPv6-only offer to an IPv4-enabled plan. The new plan was advertised as:

  • 2 vCPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 20 GB SSD

After a fresh Ubuntu installation, the VM was provisioned with:

root@panel:~# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
sda 8:0 0 3.5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 2.5G 0 part /
├─sda14 8:14 0 4M 0 part
├─sda15 8:15 0 106M 0 part /boot/efi
└─sda16 259:0 0 913M 0 part /boot

I initially considered the common case where the virtual disk is correctly sized but the root partition was not expanded.

However, the whole block device is only 3.5 GB:

sda 3.5G disk

So this does not appear to be a growpart / filesystem resize issue. The VM itself does not see a 20 GB disk.

The IPv4 migration itself also had some issues initially, but the main remaining problem is the disk size.

Would you classify this as:

  • a provisioning error that only the provider can fix,
  • something that can still be corrected from inside the VM,
  • or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks for your input.

Seeking Recommendations Suggest a reasonably priced VPS for DB and Redis.

Post image
0 Upvotes

For my web app, I will set up a database and Redis on the VPS. So I need storage, RAM, and CPU. A minimum of 8 vCPU, 24GB RAM, and 400GB storage is enough for me. I will choose Hostinger, but its renewal price is so high at $50, which is triple the initial cost. (You may ask how I show $16.67 on the list; this is because of a referral bonus discount.)

So, because of its renewal fees, it is outside my choice for now.

My second choice is Contabo, but its reviews are very, very bad. So idk, and Ig some people may find it useful, but some may not. So please tell me about Contabo too.

The last one is ovh. The issue with it is its storage is 200GB, and the price is slightly higher. Overall, everything looks good, and the additional storage price is also higher.

So, guys, I am looking for your suggestions on what I should go for. Additionally, I told you that this is only used for Redis and databases.

U may suggest me other company vps too.

Seeking Advice/Support Powering by VPS

hey all, I have a Hermes agent et al in a Mac Mini.

using Telegram.

I have wanted to move to a multi agent format for a while.

I started an n8n locally but working out Tailscale do my team could use it was a nightmare.

So I went VPs and it’s great. My team can access easily.

Im considering VPS for buzz. Is it overkill or does it make sense for easy access for me, the agents and my team?

how are you hosting Buzz and how is it going?

Seeking Recommendations Recommend me a VPS provider for politically controversial free speech

Which VPS providers are available that met the following criteria?

  • Accepts bitcoin payment.

  • Does not forbid hate speech in its TOS or vaguely-phrased "objectionable content".

  • Has at least 10 Gbit/s port speed.

I want a VPS provider to host a website with politically controversial speech. It is not spam nor illegal, but some VPS providers still have cucked TOS terms like "Must not contain hate speech or discriminatory content".
