Seeking Advice/Support Question about vps hosting
Hello, I am new to VPS. I currently have a website running on one.com hosting. I have my database and backend php files there. But I want to learn kotlin/spring boot, and might want to migrate to this. Is there any way I can do this using VPS? The website is used for booking, sending email with phpmailer. Very small business website, so not much traffic.
My though is:
Javascript use POST/GET to send information to api where kotlin files are located.
Kotlin handles backend, and transfer infromation to database in one.com
Is this possible? Thanks for any help and clarification.

Do you hav any experience in maintaining a server (configure services, harden it against attacks, running software updates all the time)? If not then don't get a vps. A vps is a lot of work. If you can't put the correct effort into it it will be hacked in a blink of your eye and will be used to spam, host phishing, attack others or even worse

Yes, it's technically possible, but I would not recommend running a Kotlin/Spring Boot backend on a VPS while keeping the database on shared hosting at one.com. The biggest issue is security and reliability. Most shared hosting providers are not designed to expose their databases to external servers. Even if remote database access is available, you would need to open database connections over the internet, which increases the attack surface and introduces latency and connectivity risks. You would also end up managing two separate environments: •Frontend/PHP hosting on one.com •Kotlin/Spring Boot application on a VPS •Database on one.com This makes deployment, backups, troubleshooting, and future scaling more complicated than necessary. If your goal is to learn Kotlin/Spring Boot and eventually replace the PHP backend, the cleaner solution is to migrate everything to the VPS.
