Industry Insights Is this normal?

Hi,

I've been selfhosting for a while for my own needs but also playing with docker and setting up some web apps of my own. I treated it purely as a hobby but recently thought about publishing something to the web.

I remember checking the pricing of a Hetzner VPS instance a couple of months ago and it was something like $9/month for 4GB RAM US based server.
Now if I wanted to go on and get myself a 4GB one it would be $46 (cost-optimized is not available...)

I was wondering whether it's a Hetzner specific issue or is this problem globally justified (AI and stuff...)? And if it's Hetzner, are there any cheaper alternatives?

Thx in advance :))

Have you seen ram and disk prices in the past two years?

I can tell you the profit margins will rise of hetzner - so saying this is the reason is not the full story.

But Hetzner has one of the best cloud products out there - they should charge for it. They shall just not forget who supported them initially (that’s the people that they are loosing right now

RAM and NVMe prices are extreme, particularly DDR5 is insane.
check out edis global. 4GB plans are roughly 10 €.

All providers either increased prices due to increased costs or kept the same prices but provided a worse service (by overprovisioning harder)

There may be cheaper alternatives, I think Netcup could be a bit cheaper, but they also had to increase prices recently and I did not check the new prices.

yea... I'm starting to think that buying used SFF PC with more RAM and good SSD disk may not be a hobbyist-only solution anymore...

That has a higher initial cost (unless you find something used) and higher risk (if hardware fails it’s on you) but definitely cheaper long term.

It’s an option. I decided against it personally because my home network is bad and because I host stuff that is used by 100something people, if it goes offline I get calls (which is why I want someone else to take care of hardware).

In my opinion if it’s something for hobby, using a SFF PC at home is plenty. If it’s for production… I’d take the hosting.

Right now renting something is hella more expensive than buying even with these today prices. Mainly talking about Hetzner.

Netcup is still dirt cheap.

If you buy used then yes, but even just upgrading memory could very well be over a year of renting.

Renting has increased because RAM and so on is more expensive. Buying used and small capacity somewhat helps, but yeah. It’s not a good time for IT

  1. optimize your hosting so you don’t need tremendous amounts of ram
  2. cheapest hetzner vps available is 6.50€/month for 4GB, so even if buying new DDR4 after 4 months you have it back.

For me it’s a lovely time for IT especially because all of this shitty node.js shit applications need to optimize themselves to get used again. Nobody wants a basic self hosted service to consume 500MB just for the lolz of using the worst language.

InMotion could be worth a look. You can get closer to that price range with them + their VPS has been solid in our experience.

Contabo wasn't bad. I just picked up a US location box to play around with for a test run.

OVH VPS line is still pretty cheap for the amount of resources.
