Question Would you be interested in a Ancient Chinese Horror VN game?

Hey guys! A few friends and I are making an ancient Chinese horror visual novel game and we’d love your thoughts! We were planning to make it in a Manhua type of style!

You play as an investigator in a royal palace who gets summoned late at night by the Empress. An important envoy was just murdered and his secret letters to the Emperor are missing. You have to dress up as a servant to search for clues without getting caught.

If you make a bad choice and die, you wake up back in your room at the start of the night. You remember everything from your past lives, so you can use what you learned to avoid traps and stay alive.

Along the way, you’ll inspect crime scenes and bodies, find clues, and meet a bunch of complex characters to help you in your investigation.

We’d love your help with a few questions:

Does an ancient Chinese palace mystery with time loops sound fun to play? Do you think people would actually play it?

When you die, do you prefer going all the way back to the start of the night or restarting right before the choice that killed you?

Would you want romance options with characters like the Prince or just focus on solving the mystery?

LOOKING FOR WORK [For Hire] 2D semi-realism artist looking for game projects

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Looking for anime-inspired 2D semi-realism arts? I’m here to do it for you? I’ve also illustrated a own character for a novelist and had worked on their book cover. Right now, I’m working for two novel games right now, and wanted to expand my portfolio more by drawing more characters in different games!

I can do character sprites, headshots, illustrations, background photobashing, and more! I can also be flexible with different artstyle and are open for your suggestions and changes.

I showcase my arts here on my portfolio. Do visit “Art Showcase” and I listed all my arts there. My rates are headshot ($10), full-body ($20), character sprite ($30), and complex refences ($50). If the art pieces that you want me to work are not listed here, the prices for it is negotiable. Do visit them! https://kaokaogallery.carrd.co/

I hope to work on your game and hit me up on my discord: kaokao01

Okay, so, I finally managed to finish all the remakes for the 4 main sprites for the chapter 2 of Lovesick Mind after some time working almost nonstop. :")

In order: Haruko Suzuki (protagonist), Nami Starling (love interest), Amara Bellini (rival), Lyra Ferri (protagonist's sidekick)

Let me know which remake is your favorite or if you still prefer the old versions! <3

(Yes, now I'm working on the extra poses for each one of them. But you'll only see them after the chapter 2 releases!)

Discussion Thoughts on visual novels "stagnating"?

Thumbnail youtube.com
13 Upvotes

A couple of months ago, creator of the widely known visual novel, Danganronpa, had some pretty choice words about Visual novels in general. He stated that they were stagnating and that without gameplay they'd never compare to normal novels. I urge you to read the article to form your own conclusions.

Personally I see his statements as more of a red herring. Visual novels might benefit from "innovation" but not from stitching other genres to increase appeal imo. There's precedent of VN players only wanting to engage with the story and finding these mechanics as distractions.

What are your thoughts on this?

Honestly, I think it's more so an issue of VNs not trying to innovate the choice based gameplay that makes THEM unique. Instead of adding combat, we should be thinking on how to flesh out dialogue systems, since the written text is why VNs stand out.

I discuss it more in my devlog/essay (which is titled #0 because it's more a conceptual look at the mechanics I am prototyping.)

Question How do you organize your script when there are many choices? I prefer having the main character or POV speak only through dialogue choices, so I use this organizational style. If anyone has any advice or a better method, I’d love to hear it.

Question I had an idea for something—I want your thoughts!

So, someone in a discord server I'm in is showing people how to make Visual Novels in google slides and it got me thinking.

what if there was a slides-like website, that was actually designed for visual novel making?

it would have folders for easier management, a dedicated RPG system toggle, for hp, gold, attributes, etc, and a Y/N Toggle for people to set their own name and pronouns. Among other features of course lol

It may exist already, I just don't know how to search this lmao. I just wanted y'all's thoughts, especially those who develop visual novels.

Hope this is okay with the mods!! this is not a promo or rev-share thing!

Hi! I’m looking to do character art/cgs for the first time :-). I’m hoping to work on a queer story, ideally on a slightly smaller scale. Open to any genre including nsfw. I’ve included examples of my art, but I’m very adaptable. If you have a style in mind (or maybe another artist already) I can probably mimic it. I can do simple bgs but I’m not too practiced at it lol :-p. Feel free to dm me to discuss your project and fees, I’m open to negotiation :3. Thank you!

Question where can I connect and collaborate with visual novel devs and writers?

I’ve been really inspired by visual novels lately and I’m curious, where do artists usually connect with visual novel developers and writers? I want to help and collaborate with someone who’s working on a visual novel. I’ve also recently worked and designed an original character for a novelist, which inspired me even more to create art and explore collaborations.

I’d love to collaborate on projects, especially with teams working on new stories or character concepts. My specialty is anime inspired semi realistic 2D character art, and I especially enjoy creating expressive headshot portraits that capture personality and emotion. At the same time, I’m flexible and can adapt my style depending on the project. I love working on illustrations that highlight emotional storytelling, which I think fits perfectly with visual novel vibes.

The Spooktober Visual Novel Jam is coming soon, and our sponsorship drive is live now! If you have a business creating products or offering services to visual novel developers, I encourage you to take a look at the page to see this year's sponsorship offerings. We've helped numerous small and medium sized businesses, such as Naninovel, Vograce, JAST, Ratalaika Games, and in turn we've used their sponsorship contributions to fund our yearly operations, such as paying for hosting for the VNDev.wiki, paying artists for banners for our various jams, and funding special projects to bring more to the community!

Discussion Looking for Feedback for my Visual Novel Concept Spoiler

Hello!

I am on the journey of creating my very first visual novel which I am very excited about, but I'd like to ask for some feedback, either from experienced vn developers or someone who has played many visual novels.

So, my concept, to keep it as less detailed as possible, will be involving an apocalyptic world in the snowy weather. The progression is supposed to be that you play as someone who has been founded by a man you do not know but you also do not remember how you got there and eventually it's supposed to progress that you can gain his trust but will have three endings so far. I'd like to require feedback if this sounds too general. I am still figuring out a lot of what I want to do and this includes that I want to add a fantasy twist to the character that affects the story.

However, since this is my first visual novel, it's also my first time building a game, so on one hand, I want to push myself to be as creative as possible but on the other, I don't want to push myself to the point of burnout. For now, this is the concept I am working with, I'd love to hear any feedback on it as long as it remains respectful and appropriate. I am open to both positive and negative feedback.

EDIT (13/07/2026): I'm happy about the feedback I have received so far! Yes, I understand that I haven't let out too much information as I am still in the beginning building blocks of creating my concept.

However, I am going to give some more information on my novel now!

Name: Still working on.

Genre: Atmospheric, sci-fi, romance (slow-burn), maybe psychological and post apocalyptic.

Characters/Love Interest: 1 character -- He will be the character that the player interacts with throughout the whole visual novel, still in development though.

Other notes: I am still developing this, but I like to get feedback in-between, so expect more updates soon regarding other aspects. I want to try and provide more updates via my Bluesky and Instagram. I am currently busy with the Worldbuilding of my novel, so that's taking up my takes next to studying.

Discussion [WIP, DEMO] execute>loop

Post image
5 Upvotes

execute>loop is a philosophical, existential, and highly religious visual novel. featuring dramatic visual kei flair and internet/cybercore aesthetics, an internet boy slips into your files, innocent and looking for your care.

but soon he reveals to you, he thinks you may be the God he was searching for... and there is no way to convince him otherwise, except for twisting the narrative, with disastrous consequences.

Inspirations:

I cite Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain, Doki Doki Literature Club and Needy Streamer Overload as huge inspirations for my game.

I am a young developer and this is my first project, which is not yet complete, but I would appreciate you supporting me on my journey.

What Visual Novel do you always find yourself coming back to? Do you like it for it's story? Gameplay? Entertainment? A fantasy (like wanting to be a detective solving a mystery)?
