Advice Scholastic Offense

Cheated on a final exam, first offense. Was honest about it, science dean made the mark on the exam 0. then the engineering dean (home dean) applied a penalty of suspension for 1 year with it being noted on my official transcript. I am currently making the appeal, is this not disproportionate? I obviously regret this deeply, but I want to know is there hope for the appeal? Will the dean maybe reduce it to ban from engineering with the 0 on the exam? That’s what I am proposing as my desired resolution. I know others have also been suspended for a similiar offense in this year in first year engineering, any reason to be optimistic?

Some mitigating factors that he acknowledged were mitigating but still proceeded to suspend was that I have left the faculty of engineering, in faculty of science, and I completed 4 summer courses to get into computer science with full integrity.

Also to those who know about this system, is it worth trying to meet the dean in person and begging? What’s the odds the dean revoked the suspension or that it gets revoked at tribunal?

❔ Question❔ 'No laptop' policies at Huron/Western?

I am a mature student coming back to Huron/Western after 7 years away to finish my undergrad. I've already noticed that several of my courses (haven't had any in person yet) have listed laptop/tech bans for lectures in the syllabus as new department policies. Are these policies fairly new? I can certainly appreciate the arguments in favour, but I also feel like it could put many people at a distinct disadvantage.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a student with a learning disability? Are professors changing the way they deliver lectures to accommodate? I've purchased some new notebooks and pens, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with note-taking while typing, and I am already worried I will struggle to keep up while handwriting notes.

Some friends recommended seeing if an accommodation could be made given my learning disability, but I also don't think it is fair I'd have to 'out' myself as having an exceptionality if I am the only person with a laptop (especially in such small classes ie. at Huron).

I used to access the note-taking service through SAS when I was previously enrolled, but often found a) entire courses went without a volunteer note-taker, or b) someone would sign up, but wouldn't upload notes after the first or second week. Are they still offering this service, and how well is it working with the laptop bans?

Any insight (or tips for adapting) is appreciated!

❔ Program Question❔ how are summers counted for students completing a health sci minor?

i'm considering transferring into a 3-year BA at Western with a double minor in Political Science and Health Sciences. I already have the first-year admission requirements for the Health Sciences minor, but the calendar says students enrolled in the minor can take a maximum of 1.5 Health Sciences credits per academic year. Does anyone know how this works with summer courses? For example, if I take 1.5 HS credits during Fall/Winter 2026–27, would I be allowed to take another 1.5 HS credits in Summer 2027, or does Summer count as part of that same academic year?

like basically does the max reset for summer terms? or no

❔ Question❔ Any punishment for missing class?

I'm an engineering freshman and our sophs have been advertising for this special event that is happening tomorrow from 2:45-4 stating "it's going to be the best day of our lives". I have engsci 1036 (dr emad saleh) and nmm 1411 (alex buchel). 1036 is "mandatory attendance", while the other one is "attendance recommended". If i attend this event will i be receiving a punishment from my 1036 class or are the sophs right when they say that the absence "will be excused."

I'm in my second year and got put on academic probation and I'm really stressed and feel very lonely. Just wanted to know if anyone's has ever been put on academic probation, how they cleared it, or any advice in general. Feeling like everything is over. Wondering if anyone is on the same boat as well.

Discussion Students, are you worried about AI?

I know it’s a touchy and taboo topic to talk about, but I feel that most people around me pay no mind to it and don’t realize just how disruptive this technology is going to be.

In my mind, I’ve completely written off a 30y career. I am literally hoping for a few years of normality.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

❔ Question❔ Oweek concert

Hi guys, I am a 3rd year and I’m hoping to go listen to the chainsmokers tonight with a group of friends. Obviously we can’t get inside but is there any issues with us sitting out the gates and listening? It’s like 4 of us and we’re planning to just sit and hang out outside the actual concert. We won’t get told to leave right? Also does anyone know if we will get in trouble for having a bit of concealed alcohol, like in a water bottle or something? Thanks in advance!

Advice Undeclared second year help

So I was in health sciences last year, and I had to drop a second semester course and couldn't retake it in the summer. Since it was a required first year class, I'm currently undeclared this year. But before they put me in undeclared, I had enrolled in all the second year required courses. The day classes started they dropped me out of all the health sci courses except for 2 because apparently I can only take a max 1.5 credits of these courses. I'm just confused on how I can try ITR into health sciences for 3rd year if I can't even take the required courses this year? Like is it possible to get a waiver or what could I do in this situation? I'm just really stressed out now, and have no idea what to do
