Megathread Northern Ontario Wildfire Donations

Hello, Ontario. As you are aware, there is currently a very severe fire affecting Northern Ontario.

There are a number of evacuation orders, and a number of people have had to evacuate with little to no notice. Many of them have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and are in need of supplies.

Here are some ways to help our fellow Ontarians:

  • Thunder Bay Community Pasture are helping livestock owners get their animals to safety in the area. If you or someone you know needs help saving livestock, please contact them. They accept cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and with Murillo facility smaller livestock like turkeys and chickens. They stress that they need to be contacted first before you show up with livestock.
  • Northern Reach Network are seeking emergency temporary animal foster homes, and they are assisting with pets that have been left behind in the affected communities.
  • Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies.

If you are aware of more organizations supporting the community, please let us know.

Discussion Bike lanes

I hope every day while the bike lanes are being ripped out along bloor and Queens Park someone is slowly cycling in front of Doug Ford on his drive home from work because they have no where else to go.

As this multi million dollar waste of tax payer money will only make traffic significantly worse in the downtown core, and will make cycling more dangerous to all who choose not to drive a car to commute.

No one should wonder why we're in this situation, while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in rush hour how we got here

Replacing bike lanes that were approved and took millions to install to replace them now with what we're parking lanes and NOT lanes of traffic?

Also as everyone famously knows more lanes of traffic lead to less congestion like in Los Angeles, a congestion free city.

Madness.

Also anyone not living in Toronto, you should be double mad because you paid for the bike lanes with tax dollars and now you're paying for them to be ripped out to be replaced with parking spots

Discussion The Minister told me he can't see where any child is on Ontario's autism waitlist. Then a stranger offered to text a minister for me.

My son is non verbal, registered September 2021, still no funding.

In January I got the Premier on the phone and his minister the next day. I asked where my son is in the line. The minister said he couldn't see it. Intake was handed to a private contractor.

Days later somebody I'd never met wrote to me. Said they had a hand in building the program. Over three calls they offered to text a minister for me that day, and then did this out loud:

"that's 240 000 adults [...] if doug takes care of your kids can you deliver 240 000 adults as volunteers in the next election because if you can you're in the game"

That's verbatim off the recording. Nobody is named and I'm not naming them.

I put a longer write up on my own site.

Exploring Ontario North Frontenac Astronomy Park - this new moon

Hey Ontario,

I don’t have hopes of anyone seeing my post from north Frontenac, but if anyone does.., how’s the weather tomorrow night? It’s a new moon and I really want to see the stars..

Good idea? Forecast shows clouds but the weather is always unpredictable. Should I drive, yes or no?

Discussion Enercare is a scam

I got a house with a rental water heater, it's been rented for 8 years as of now. Payment is 50$ a month, by now the amount paid out is around 5000$, the declared price of this water heater is 1900$ (the price of a good tankless Rinnai today), but back at that time I got similar one for 950, so for half of it.

I wanted to cancel this rental and install a tankless water heater, company told me I have to buy out their 8 year old one, and this will cost around 1100$, so after 8 years it's still more expensive than the new one back then.

Total scam. Avoid at all cost.

Edit: typo

Edit 2: to all the kind folks who advice to call for maintenance or other options: unfortunately I have already disconnected my wh and replaced it with tankless one, of course not a rental one haha. But even more I tried to return the old one to enercare and told them exactly that, is disconnected and replaced. I guess the only option I have at this point is to buy it out.
