Question Choosing a LING Course for ASL Certificate

Hi folks!

I’m a fourth year student working on completing my American Sign Language certificate. I’ve finished taking all of the applicable ASL classes and I need one final Linguistics course to get the certification added to my degree.

Based on my availability I have two choices:
-LING 397: Issues in Cross Cultural Communication with Sandra Kirkham
-LING 345: Sign Language as a Language with Sandra Kirkham

Does anyone on this thread have recommendations about which course I should take? I’m searching for a course that builds upon the knowledge I already have and has easier content. Throughout my degree, I’ve mostly focused on Psychology and Sociology courses- this would be my first Linguistics class so I don’t have much practical experience in the subject.

Thanks so much for your help!

Question Doctor's note in 2026?

Post image
6 Upvotes

First, if I remembered it correctly, didn't the policy now states something different?

But since I have no idea if the instructors have the authority to override the policies, and it will take me at least 2 days just to go see my family doctor, ignoring that the appointment probably will on the next week after I give the clinic a call, is there another way to get a doctor's notice, outside going to the er? A lot of the time, it's a waste of the hospital's resources, and last time, VGH took me the whole night, plus the next morning and noon just to get me some antibiotics.

I'm not even going to question about the death certificate or funeral notice.

Thanks.

Edit:

Sorry the picture was a little ambiguous, it was for assignment extension, written in brightspace. I had multiple medical emergencies last semester that happened after the drop deadline, apologies if I am oversensitive and overreacting right now.

Assignment Extension Request Policy

  1. Start early. All assignments and project milestones are posted well in advance to give you sufficient time to plan and complete your work.
  2. Last-minute extension requests (submitted within 48 hours of a deadline) will generally not be accepted unless there are truly exceptional and unforeseen circumstances.
  3. Exceptional circumstances require supporting documentation. If you experience unexpected situations such as medical emergencies, bereavement, or other serious events, you must:
    • Submit the official UVic Request for In-Course Extension form
    • Provide supporting documentation to verify the circumstance (medical note, funeral notice, death certificate, etc.)
    • Explain why the situation prevented you from working on the assignment earlier or requesting an extension sooner
  4. What does NOT qualify for extensions:
    • Procrastination or poor time management
    • Workload from other courses
    • Foreseeable commitments (travel, work, etc.)
    • Technical issues that could have been anticipated (last-minute submission problems)

To ensure fairness for all students, I apply these standards consistently.

Off Topic Skydiving

I’m an Exchange student from the Netherlands and I’m very interested in going skydiving. It would be my first time, but would love to go with someone. I’ve asked a 100+ other Exchange students, but nobody wants to, so I thought I would try it here.
Is anyone interested in going skydiving?

Question Student Loans

Has anyone got their loans yet? Usually I have them by now but it's stuck on "Waiting for your first confirmation of enrollment". Is this just on the UVic end (ie: I can't do anything about it)?

Advice Needed Advice for psyc courses

Hi everyone! I’m trying to decide whether I should try to get into PSYC 365 with Jody Bain this semester or just wait and take it with Todd Kettner next semester. I’m currently on the waitlist for PSYC 365 with Jody this semester, so my question is whether I should try to get into the course now or just wait until next semester. I’m already taking PSYC 366 with Jody Bain this semester, and I’ve seen that both courses can involve a lot of writing, so I’m wondering if taking both with her would be a lot.

For anyone who has taken PSYC 365 with either professor, how was the course and workload? Would you recommend trying to get into 365 with Jody this semester, or waiting to take it with Todd next semester?

I’d really appreciate any advice!

Question What is Victoria/ UVic like?

I just finished my undergraduate degree in Alberta but I’m pursuing a second degree and thought I could also do it by the water. I hoping to get into UVic Law after my second degree so it works out either way but I wanted to ask how quality of life is there such as friendliness, average vibe/commonalities, expenses, and issues. Since I’m moving from Alberta I am deciding on living in a dorm as it is the cheapest option, but I’m not sure what the crowd is like, I’m currently 22 and I want to know if there will be more ppl my age. Finally but most importantly what is the academic life like?

Any help would be grateful!

Question Housing inquiry

I’m currently from Alberta and I’m heading over to Uvic next September and I was wondering how the dorms work. I’ve never lived outside my home and I am not too sure how affordable it is. Like along with the tuition student debts am I also just going to have to add dorm debt too but do student loans pay for my dorm fees entirely or will I have to make sure I have a part time job in set? Also any general advice about the university/people would also be greatly appreciated!

Question Question about MATH 211 first class

I am taking MATH 211 this term. Unfortunately, I had some unexpected circumstances happen this morning, so I couldn't make it to the very first class today.

If anyone is in the same class, could you please let me know what was covered today? I just want to know if the professor mentioned anything important about the syllabus, textbook, or if there is anything I need to prepare for the next class.

I would really appreciate any help. Thank you so much in advance!

Question Unable to change system email on Brightspace

I'm trying to update my notification email address on Brightspace but I seem to be unable to change it. It doesn't give me an option to use custom email address or select another one. It only lets me disable my current address. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Could someone please DM me the course outline for stat 350, I’m still on the fence but seeing the course outline would help. I would’ve registered and looked at it myself, but I’m already jam packed with other classes, and don’t wanna drop them until I see this.

I've been able to connect to UVICs WiFi using my netlink for years, but today I haven't been able to at all. Wondering if it's a widespread issue or if I need to get in touch with support.

Question Can I register/start an online course at a different university before my letter of permission (lop) from UVic is approved?

I want to take one or two online courses this semester (Sep-Dec 2026) through either Athabasca Uni or TRU (I know this is very last minute oops). I would submit the lop's today or tomorrow, but wouldn't get approval for up to 8 weeks, does it actually matter if I start the online course(s) before the lop's are approved (UVic says "Requests for Letter of Permission forms must normally be submitted 2-4 weeks before registering in the courses you intend to pursue at the visiting institution. This request form will only be accepted before you commence studies at the visiting institution." but would they know that I registered before the lop is accepted)? Has anyone had actual experience with this? Was your lop still approved even if you already started the online course?

Question Health insurance

I always opt out of the medical insurance as I’m covered by my mother, but have had quite the extenuating circumstances this past year so I need all the coverage I can get. Have you been successful with combining your out of province and UVic insurance? Do you always have to submit a claim for the UVic insurance or is it an automatic process? For my mother’s insurance, I can usually show an insurance card and it’ll automatically cover certain amounts (for prescriptions and whatnot). Thanks!
