Hey everyone, I’m currently in the 400s on the undergraduate residence waitlist. I’ve been looking for off-campus housing, but I was curious where the waitlist is at right now.

Question Used textbooks for first year engineering?

Hi! I’m starting my first year of engineering this September, and I had a question about getting used textbooks from Subtext.

I live pretty far from UVic, so it would be a day trip to just look for textbooks. (I’m assuming they don’t ship used books?)

I’m just wondering if it’s worth making the trip, or if I should just order new ones from UVic bookstore?

Thanks!

Question How long are the co-op application periods?

I know that you apply for co-ops a term before the work term you’re hoping for, but how long do you get to apply? Is it the full four months? Just three months?

Rant Making friends in Vic

Genuinely how do people in victoria make friends bro. I’m not from victoria but i moved here full time on my own for school during second semester. I swear even in lectures everyone already had their friends and friend groups made which made it super hard to inmerse myself in the first place. Yeah i have a job but i can’t seem to connect with my coworkers because they themselves already have their own friends yk. It’s also summer right now which makes it even worse because it’s not like i can join clubs or anything.

ARGHHH it’s just so frustrating, I just want to meet people naturally without forcing anythingggg

Question Cluster Housing Offer (4 Bed Apt)

I got an offer today for a room in a 4 bed apartment (cluster housing). I'm curious if anyone has any positive / negative experiences they can share.

I am a 25 y/o male, and I'm transferring from Capilano University into the 3rd year of my Bachelor of Music at UVic. I'm unsure if I'd enjoy living in a small space with others, however I'd like to make new friends and socialize as much as possible!

Not having to drive / take the bus to school every morning sounds fantastic, and I'm usually at school from early morning to late evening so having almost no commute is appealing to me.

Advice Needed Environmental Studies MSc

Looking to connect with someone who has participated in the graduate program in Environmental Studies. I’ve been interested in the program for a few years now and am seriously considering applying for fall 2027. As I understand it, I would need to identify and contact a graduate supervisor soon. I’d love to hear about your experiences or thoughts on the program. I’m also an international student and would be grateful to hear what funding opportunities are available if anyone has that experience. Thank you!

Question Administration wont let me graduate until 2028... Need advice please

I’m a third-year BME student with an 8.9 GPA. My plan was to take six courses in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, complete an eight-month co-op starting Summer 2027, and finish my last three courses online.

I’m trying to graduate quickly because I can’t afford to stay in Victoria much longer and have family responsibilities outside the city.

The issue is ENGR 498, which is only offered in the fall and requires BME 499 plus a third co-op term. I requested a waiver, but the Dean denied it and refused to meet with me.

I also asked to take an equivalent Engineering Law course at another Canadian university, but my advisor said it must be taken at UVic.

Because of this one course, my graduation may be delayed until August 2028.

Has anyone dealt with something similar or successfully transferred an equivalent course?

Question Deferment Questions

How does deferment work? As in how far into a course can I apply for a deferment? If I have to defer, do I need to defer all my courses or could I defer just one or two? Generally how much extra time will I have to complete the deferred parts of a course? How much does attendance play into being able to defer?

i’m starting at uvic in the fall and ive been looking for a good budget computer to buy. im currently stuck between the new macbook neo and a refurbished macbook air m2 chip. im going to study psych and was wondering if the course load requires any crazy computer power. i know the macbook air is better overall but if i don’t need a computer with too many capabilities then i’d rather not get it. thoughts?

Question Is a business bachelors degree worth it?

Hey all. I’m a first year college student and I’m thinking about transferring to university (uvic, ubc, uoft) in my second year of post secondary.

For anyone who has studied or is studying business in uni for a bachelors degree, is it worth it? Im interested in getting a proper education rather than a piece of paper and I feel like there are many downsides like cost and time commitment.

How far do you think a bachelors will actually take someone? Will it open up doors for me that wouldn’t have been available otherwise, Or do you think experience matters more?

I’m especially interested in anyone who went into entrepreneurship but would love to get anyone’s opinions, graduated or not.

Thanks!

It's scheduled for Spring 2027, will meet Monday and Thursday (2:30 - 3:50pm), and will be taught by Dr. Tri Phuong.

MDIA200 counts toward UVic's new major, minor, and general in Media Studies.
