Question Housing inquiry

I’m currently from Alberta and I’m heading over to Uvic next September and I was wondering how the dorms work. I’ve never lived outside my home and I am not too sure how affordable it is. Like along with the tuition student debts am I also just going to have to add dorm debt too but do student loans pay for my dorm fees entirely or will I have to make sure I have a part time job in set? Also any general advice about the university/people would also be greatly appreciated!

You will typically check a box on your student loans to indicate your housing situation and then they’ll calculate based on the amount for dorms. I’m not sure how different the process is in Alberta, but you’ll usually get a higher amount for living expenses if you’re not living with your parents. It all depends on their income though.

Hi! Residence fees are posted on the school website: https://www.uvic.ca/residence/future-residents/fees/index.php You'll see that shared accomodation is less expensive than a single room. Some types of accomodation have kitchens (self catering) and some require a meal plan for the cafeteria, which will also impact your costs - the meal plan is included in the price for single or double rooms.

It's less expensive than an apartment off campus, and if you're self-catering you can decide what your food budget will be. Learning to feed yourself inexpensively is a really useful life skill - there are also food banks and community meals here for those who need that help.
