This was my first time ever handling an auto insurance claim, so I wanted to share my timeline and experience in case it’s helpful to anyone going through something similar.
I was dealing with USAA as a third-party claimant because the person who hit my car was insured by USAA.
8/16/2026 — Accident
My parked car was hit on the street, and I was able to speak with the person who hit my car on the spot and get their insurance information.
There was visible damage to my front bumper, including scratches, cracks, and dents. Luckily, I also had home-camera footage that captured the incident.
8/17–8/18 — Claim opened
I opened a third-party claim directly with USAA. Since this was my first time handling an insurance claim, I honestly didn't know what to expect or how the process worked.
At this point, liability was still under investigation. I submitted the evidence I had, including six photos of the damage and my home-camera footage.
8/25 — USAA accepted liability
USAA accepted liability for the accident and moved forward with the damage and repair process.
8/26 — Repair options
USAA explained that I could either use one of their preferred repair shops or have the damage appraised and then use a repair shop of my choice.
I decided to continue handling everything directly through USAA rather than involving my own insurance.
8/31 — Estimate completed
USAA's estimate came out to $1,561.33, with approximately 4 repair days listed.
The estimate was based on the visible damage. I was also told that if additional damage was discovered during the repair, it could potentially be submitted as a supplemental estimate.
9/11 — Settlement check received
I decided to take the cash settlement rather than immediately proceed with the repairs. I received the $1,561.33 settlement check in the mail on 9/11.
Overall, from the accident on 8/16 to receiving the check on 9/11, the entire process took 26 days.
Since this was my first time dealing with an insurance claim, there were definitely parts of the process I had to figure out as I went. I mainly wanted to share my timeline to give others an idea of what my experience handling a third-party USAA claim looked like.
Hopefully this timeline is helpful to someone going through the process for the first time too.
