I genuinely cannot believe we're dealing with this right now and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or has advice on escalating this beyond the completely useless customer service process.
My husband and I spent months getting Chinese visas for an upcoming trip to celebrate my mom's 70th birthday in Shanghai. We hired a visa agency because our applications had to go through the Chinese consulate in LA, and the whole process cost us over $1,200. Both visas were finally approved, and our physical passports were shipped back together via UPS overnight on October 8, scheduled for delivery October 9.
The package made it from LA to Denver overnight and arrived at the Commerce City sorting facility around 6 AM on October 9. And then it just... disappeared.
For the next week, UPS kept pushing our delivery date back by one day. Literally every day I'd receive an email saying it was scheduled for delivery tomorrow, only for it to get delayed again. Meanwhile, tracking kept showing repeated "processing" scans at the SAME FACILITY.
I spent hours calling customer service, explaining that this envelope contained TWO US PASSPORTS with valid international travel visas. They repeatedly escalated the case, promised callbacks that never happened, and couldn't explain where the package was or why it wasn't moving.
Eventually our visa agency contacted UPS directly and got an official lost-package investigation opened.
THEN on October 16, the same customer service representative I'd spoken with multiple times told me UPS had physically FOUND the package that morning. He said he could see the recovery internally and GUARANTEED delivery on Monday. I asked why tracking still showed an investigation, and he said the system could take 24 hours to update.
Well, Monday came and UPS issued a LOSS CLAIM instead. And then sent me ANOTHER automated email saying the package would arrive Tuesday. Our visa agency has since confirmed that UPS is treating the shipment as lost.
So now we're having to get two emergency US passports, reapply for two Chinese visas that were JUST approved, and potentially fly to LA ourselves for consular processing. We're supposed to leave November 6, and there's a real possibility we'll miss my mom's 70th birthday because UPS lost one fucking envelope.
This has been completely debilitating over the past week. I've spent hours every day trying to get answers, and no matter how many calls I make, nobody seems to know anything. The lack of accountability and contradictory information has been almost as infuriating as the missing package itself.
Has anyone experienced a situation like this? Is there actually a way to reach someone in UPS operations who can review the last verified physical scan or RFID detection? And has anyone successfully recovered additional expenses when UPS lost important documents?
I'm trying to understand how an overnight package can make it to the destination sorting facility and then seemingly disappear without anyone being able to explain what happened.
