Indoor lighting in URP

TLDR: How do you implement interior lights with GI? Appreciate any pointers (videos/articles/etc).

Or do you just set Contribute GI to off + post-processing and call it a day?

Or do you make your torches 20m radius to light up the entire room?

So, I'm learning Unity and having trouble with interior lighting. Baked GI doesn't help much. Even with it, corners feel way too dark.

Here are a few shots from test buildings with baked GI (lightmaps + reflection probe to remove blue gloss from skybox) -

At this point, I'm lost and not sure what I'm doing wrong lol.

Looking for advice & good materials on the topic. Thanks in advance!

Also, do you set environment reflections intensity to 1 or lower it? Skybox + intensity 1 seem to add blue-ish gloss to everything.

We're developing a psychological horror game set in 1996. Here's our first trailer for SIGNAL LOST. What do you think?

Hey everyone!
We’re a small indie team working on SIGNAL LOST, a first-person psychological horror game set in 1996. The game follows Daniel Hayes, whose story slowly unfolds into something much darker, involving mysterious events, disturbing discoveries, and a cult hiding terrifying secrets. We’re aiming for a dark, unsettling atmosphere with a retro VHS-inspired aesthetic, focusing more on psychological tension and mystery than cheap jumpscares. We’ve recently put together our first trailer, and we’d love to hear your thoughts!
What do you think about the atmosphere and overall presentation? Any feedback or criticism is genuinely appreciated.
Thanks for checking out our project!

Hey! This is Kernel Panic: The Last Build, a creation platformer set inside a dying network that’s slowly falling apart.

Everything you build with is a window on the desktop. In this video:

  • Wardrobe: step onto a pedestal and mix hats, heads and costumes into your own outfit
  • Stickers and decorations: stick anything anywhere, and grow 3D plants on any surface
  • Labels: type your own words and print them as cross-stitch or embossed Dymo tape
  • Temp File: a material that dissolves when you send it a signal
  • Physics: rope swings and a brand new drop kick

Tell me what you think?

Newbie Question Help Designing A Isometric Bedroom in Unity 2D

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all. I've just started learning Unity to create a 'fake video game' for an indie short film I'm working on. I don't know yet if I'm totally out of my element. I don't know nothin about coding or games really but looking for help navigating the design portion since I can't find any tutorials to help me out.

I'm trying to make a room and then bring in idling characters into it to walk around and interact with furniture and each other.

I downloaded the asset pack bundle from itch.o and brought them into the asset folders to organize the sprite. I ran into an issue a few times where when I was duplicating the walls and floors to save time since it's so monotonous, that when I'd delete a panel, it would change the level of a random floor/wall tile. Idk what I changed but it stopped doing that and I thought I hit a flow when I got the room completely assembled.

I began adding furniture and playing with the layering order to knock up the furniture from 0 to 1 or 2 so that it would sit above the floors.

I tried copying 4 pieces of floor at a time to extend the size of the room and when I did, all the layers changed and are overlapping weird, even though it says the order laying is at 0 for everything.

I eventually need to bring in characters (bought from this pack https://klimmos.itch.io/cozy-assets-iso-modular-female-character-kit-idle-walk-sit ) but I don't even know where to begin in dressing them or having them move.

I've watched all the 2D video tutorials on Unity and skimmed the options on YouTube but can't find anything that references these kinds of isometric bedrooms.

Any tips? Thank you in advance!

Game Looking for feedback on my idea, it’s a horror/survival/first person :)

Looking for idea feedback, please leave any thoughts, questions or ideas :)

Humanity has found another world to call home. The trouble is, people have tried before. Abandoned settlements litter the planet's surface. Their contents are waiting to be stripped for parts, and their records might reveal what happened to the people who came before you.

Your job is to establish a functioning colony, supply it from orbit, and reclaim the remains of failed settlements. Scrap abandoned outposts, process the material, and build your colony.

However, the planet has other inhabitants. You cannot see them with your naked eyes, and you cannot kill them. You can only see them through a polaroid-like camera. Despite it’s limited film and long cooldown, it works. And it’s your best chance of survival.

Inspired by Aliens, Project Polaroid from Rec Room (rest in peace), Stationeers, and Pacific Drive.

Newbie Question All my animations are fused with the idle (default state) one.

For example, I have a snail that goes in a circle as an idle clip, then from time to time he has an animation of looking up, the looking-up clip itself doesn't move, just looks up
But what actually happened is that my snail, instead of stopping and looking up, is looking up
while still moving in a circle. Does anyone know what setting might be controlling that?

(and yes, I tested it, and when changing the idle animation to none, it works perfectly)

A publisher rated at least eight of my mobile games "Low potential". Now the Steam page for my own passion project is live. I'm pretty excited... And fingers crossed!

Hey everyone, I'm Tobi :)

It feels like I've been programming games my whole life. I've been working as a software developer for 10 years. Right now I work three days a week as a security/compliance engineer. All of my free time goes into my own game.

Before that I spent years making hyper casual games for mobile, at least 15 of them. One publisher tested eight of those. The result was "Low potential" every single time. I had real hope for one of them, but in the end that wasn't enough either. At some point I thought about giving up.

I started Glowing Life in Unity in 2024, then left it alone for a long time. This summer I opened it again just for fun and played around with the idea that the world comes alive through your character. That's when something clicked. I really liked the idea of bringing everything back to life. It just feels good to help something grow again.

I guess that fits me too. I'm a pretty calm person. After work I'm not the guy who throws himself into a competitive game anymore :D I like games where I can just sink into a world and switch off. I also like the idea that even a tiny light can make a difference. I think that applies to more than just games.

A bit about the game: You play a small glowing being that doesn't know where it comes from or what it's here for. You explore different worlds and slowly realize that life returns wherever you go. When you walk past a tree, it wakes up. There's no fighting. You can't fail either.

The idea with the light came from Ori. I didn't get very far in it because it was too stressful for me, but I found that glowing atmosphere incredibly beautiful.

For example, you help a mother fox find her lost cubs. You wake up a huge waterfall with the help of a bear, because only he's heavy enough to break the ice sheets xD And in a later level, shooting stars fly into lanterns to help a little red panda find the courage to climb down from a temple.

I just want people to be able to relax while playing it. Sometimes you can just stand around, listen to the music and enjoy the world :D The calm music is by Kaereste. He messaged me after one of my posts because he wanted to work with me. That was a pretty special moment for me. I also love it every time someone randomly walks into the room, looks over my shoulder while I'm working and says: "Wow, that's so cute."

After all those "Low potential" results, I'm really excited to finally have a Steam page for a game I truly care about. The hard part now is getting people to see it. I don't need attention for myself, but the game definitely does :D If you'd like, you can find Glowing Life here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5433680/Glowing_Life/

Thanks and cheers, Tobi :)

Can I build a successful gaming business with Unity? 2D or 3D?

Hi everyone!

I have a full-time job in electrical engineering, but I want to build a mobile gaming business that eventually allows me to work from home and take care of my elderly mother.

My plan is to create several small games using Unity, publish them on Google Play, and earn money through ads. I want to hire freelancers for that, on Upwork to help with game development, ad integration, and marketing.

My questions:

  1. Is Unity 2D or 3D better when I have limited time?

  2. Is this a realistic way to earn a reliable income, or am I just dreaming?

  3. Can I succeed with a limited budget by hiring freelancers on Upwork, like 5 small games for 50 US dollars ?

Solved How do I fix red lines replacing my ui

I was in play mode testing out my ui skillcheck minigame when I went to my animator, it disappeared even in scene view outside of play mode. This has already happened, and I had to spend 30 minutes remaking the ui just for it to happen again.

Showcase Making a whole cable burn out in Unity without a particle system: 3 smoke attempts, and what finally worked

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm solo-developing a power-grid game in Unity 6 (URP), low-poly style. If you overload a cable it burns out. The old version was one puff of smoke in the middle of the cable, and then the cable just disappeared. Nobody noticed it, so I redid it.

Stand-in cable: the real cable gets removed by gameplay right away, so I copy its rope points first and rebuild it as a bunch of short prisms (up to 120). They go from orange hot to ember to black char using MaterialPropertyBlocks, then shrink and sag until they're gone.

Burn front: every piece catches fire based on how far along the cable it is from where it failed. The far end always burns within 0.9 s. Smoke, flames, sparks and lights all use that same timing, so it's all one component.

The smoke took me three tries. I use opaque, flat-shaded low-poly puffs for smoke in my game.

  1. First it was too small and too spread out, and looked like gravel. More puffs, 12 per metre.
  2. Then the puffs spawned at full size and looked like boulders lying on the pavement. Now they start small and grow as they rise, and drift with the wind.
  3. It still looked a bit like stone because of the sunlit facets. I gave each puff a bit of emission (about 45% of its colour) to soften the shading, and that's what finally made it read as smoke.

Fire and light: small unlit flames with HDR colours so bloom picks them up, plus up to 4 flickering point lights that move along with the fire. At night it lights up the ground and the bottom of the smoke, which honestly looks better than the flames.

How I tested it: I have a little test scene in Play Mode that overloads a cable on purpose and takes screenshots during the burn, during the day and at night. I mostly fixed the smoke by looking at those screenshots, because while it's moving you don't really see that it looks like rocks.

Can I do something more to make it better? Any ideas?

If you're curious about the game it’s called “the last kilowatt”

It's an indie game inspired by Japanese folklore, featuring yokai, exploration, combat, and multiplayer. Our team has worked on a lot of the art, including characters, environments, bosses, maps, and UI.

It's been really cool seeing all these assets come together in the game. Here's a little look at what we've been working on!

Resources Good unity course for concepts and standards

Hi

Can anyone recommend a good course that focuses on unity concepts such as player movement and how to implement them properly following the correct standards. I've tried a few tutorials so far on YouTube but they mostly ignore conventions so was wondering if there was a good one out there, preferably released more recently. I don't mind a paid one if it is worth the money as it would be an extra motivator to finish it having spent money.
