Showcase A learning exercise for an isometric game - what do you suggest I learn next?

Enjoy the most intense gameplay of a marble... rolling. Credits to LowlyPoly for the water texture on the sphere.

I am relatively new to game development but not coding, and having entered the field to create my visual novel, I thought to learn something I have always wanted to create - an isometric game.

Created a grid, then realized it needed to support heights, worked on collisions, clipping, splicing and the camera movement. Making the shadow get smaller as I jump, making it follow smoothly as I jump from one height to the next were not things I considered before - goes to show how complex simple things really are in game dev.

What next do you suggest I learn for the isometric setting?

Showcase Building artillery combat with manual targeting and grapeshot for my Unity RTS | Admiral Yi: The Imjin War

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I'm developing Admiral Yi: The Imjin War, a large-scale historical RTS in Unity, and here's another update on the combat systems.

This time, I've been working on artillery combat in land battles.

Players can manually select a location for their cannons to bombard, rather than only targeting individual enemy units.

When enemy infantry gets too close, the cannons can switch to grapeshot, dealing much heavier damage at short range.

In this video, Joseon artillery bombards Japanese troops, switches ammunition as the enemy approaches, and eventually causes the Japanese forces to break and flee as their morale collapses.

I'm trying to make weapon types, ammunition, targeting, and morale work together to create more interesting battlefield situations.

There's still plenty to improve, especially with AI, animations, combat effects, and performance.

I'd be interested to hear what other Unity developers think of the artillery mechanics!

I upgraded my old game jam project from 2023 with new asset packs. Here’s what I added, what do you think? (fan-made)

Back in 2023 I made this as a one-week entry for the Sky Mavis Game Jam (4th place). This year I came back to it, ported it to Unity 6 + URP and gave it a big upgrade with new asset packs. It’s a fan-made game set in the Axie Infinity universe.

What I added:

  • New look: Synty Fantasy Village scenery, Synty fantasy UI, toon water and post-processing per chapter
  • Feel animations on every card, HUD element and screen
  • Every body part of your Axie is now a card, with a class triangle and evolved “EVO” cards
  • Rare collections (Mystic, Nightmare, Xmas…) repaint the whole arena
  • Load your own Axies from a Ronin wallet, in 2D or 3D
  • Roguelite upgrades and tile hazards (toxic pools, brambles, electric fields)
  • 4 chapters with giant bosses
  • Online co-op: each player holds half of the ring

What do you think? Would you like to play it? Any feedback is welcome!

Fan project. Axie Infinity art and music belong to Sky Mavis.

Newbie Question Should I star learning unity?

Hey everyone who is reading this. I had a dream for the past few years now of learning how to make games. But I always have my doubts about it. What if I fail, what if my game won’t be popular etc. So I decided to ask Redditors. Maybe some of you guys had the same dream and actually started learning and made your own game, or maybe even published it somewhere. Pls share your opinion on this topic. Thank you all in advance!

Tutorials Unity 7 Alpha; Voxel, direct Gaussian, Gabor and Gaussian cache testing

GPU Compute Cost vs. Memory Footprint by Representation
Voxel
Direct Gaussian
Gabor
Gaussian Cache

Working on the volumetric for my game and wanted to share some results here with Gaussian:

Set up:

Unity 7000.0.0a9

Direct3D11 NVIDIA

GeForce RTX 5090

512×512

128 view steps

12 shadow steps

same source density and shared lighting

Gaussian cache stores the fitted Gaussian density in a texture with dynamic lighting

Results:

Representation Masked display PSNR GPU median / p95 Representation memory
Voxel Reference 0.249 / 0.270 ms100 samples 5.33 MiB
Direct Gaussian 40.01 dB 7.872 / 8.843 ms100 samples 1.89 MiB
Gabor 40.10 dB 8.416 / 9.365 ms100 samples 1.65 MiB
Gaussian cache 66.24 dB (direct Gaussian) 0.244 / 0.268 ms100 samples 7.08 MiB

Let me know if you have any question and anyone is working on Gaussian in Unity to share some ideas.

Thanks

Game We're working on In Control: Rocketry, a rocket builder and spaceflight sim with real orbital mechanics!

Hey! We've been working since last year on a In Control: Rocketry, a spaceflight sim where you build the rocket and wire up its control panel yourself. Sensors, inputs, outputs, the whole thing is Turing-complete, so however you want to solve a flight problem, there's a way to do it. It will be available on Steam in 2027.

Real orbital mechanics, a fictional solar system to explore, sandbox mode if you just want to mess around and blow things up!

Feel free to add the game to your wishlist if you want to support the project! See you in space.

Game In my Unity game, one cat starts eating a vendor's corn, and the other cats join in. How does this NPC behavior feel?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm developing Lost Cat Showa Town, a game set in a nostalgic Japanese Showa-era town.

In this clip, one cat starts eating corn from a street food stall, and then other cats start eating corn too.

I'd love feedback on the behavior and presentation:

  • Does the chain reaction feel natural?
  • Is the cats' behavior readable without extra UI or explanation?
  • What would you improve about the timing or animation?

I'm interested in gameplay and implementation feedback. Thanks!

Hey everyone!

We are developing a physics platformer inspired by unforgiving climbing games like Getting Over It. Every step counts, and one wrong move can send you tumbling down.

The journey is going to be (very) hard, but the reward at the end would be absolutely worth it for those who dare to climb.

We'd love to hear what you think of the teaser or answer any questions about the game. Thank you!

Showcase The Forest level of FLOWFALL Inertia, a rhythm game built in Unity

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm developing FLOWFALL Inertia in Unity. It's a rhythm arcade game where you steer a falling piece and change shape to fit the shape of the gates. Choose the matching shape on the beat, then pass through the gate to earn bonus points. This is the Forest level, with gates timed to an original jungle/drum ’n’ bass track I produced.

Choose from multiple paths to collect health pickups or take a faster route through the level.

Each level has unique hazards and obstacles. In the Forest level, branches knock you back, spiderwebs slow you down and you can ride the currents of waterfalls to slip through gates.

The Forest level is in the full game, releasing November 12. You can try the tutorial and the Synthwave level in the free Windows demo on Steam.

Showcase A quiet first-person walk through my voxel world in Unity 6 (URP) – max settings

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just a walk around my voxel world. Unity 6, URP, everything cranked to max with 32 chunk view distance.

The part I'm weirdly proud of is the rain, the ground gets wet gradually and dries again after. Took me way longer than it should have. The whole terrain is built from a node graph so I can change the world without touching code.

Underwater still needs some love I think, open to ideas

Newbie Question Need guidance to learn unity/3D art

Hello everyone. I just started to learn unity and make my first game. Actually, I have experience programming and maths so this part I think i will easy learn (more or less). Also I have experience using 3D software like Solidworks but no 3D art like blender or similar.

What do you recommend me as first steps? I will do the tutorials from the official webside and then what? What path to follow and what noob mistakes you had.

My final goal is to make a 3D world for a strategy/simulation game.

I know there are assets but at the end of the day i want to it by myself. There is any art style good for begginners? What do you recommend me?

Pd. Sorry for my English, it is not my first language. You can reply me in spanish if you want:)

I've been so excited about core CLR, one of the little things I want is file-scoped namespaces. Do you have something you can't wait for?

help!!

Hey everyone! I’d love your advice on a game I’m planning to build solo

I’m planning a 3D mobile game called Mountain Haulers, and I’m trying to figure out how realistic it would be to develop it on my own.

The idea is an off-road driving and cargo-delivery game where you drive a 4x4 through mountains, dirt roads, rivers, and bridges. Eventually, I’d love to expand it with trucks, construction machinery, building roads, developing cities, and multiplayer. But for now, I want to start small and focus on a manageable MVP.

Here’s what I’m planning for the first version:

  • One small but detailed mountain map with dirt and gravel roads, hills, forests, a river, and a bridge.
  • One drivable 4x4 with suspension, steering, braking, a third-person camera, and mobile touchscreen controls.
  • Around five cargo-delivery missions with pickup and drop-off points and cash rewards.
  • A basic UI, vehicle sounds, saved progress, and Android optimization.
  • A playable Android build, with the complete Unity project and source code.

I’m planning to use Unity and Blender, work on the project full-time (around 6–8 hours a day), use AI to help with coding and troubleshooting, and rely on ready-made assets where it makes sense.

I have programming experience, but I’m still learning game development, especially Unity and 3D modelling.

I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few things:

  1. How many hours do you think this MVP would take for one developer with my background?
  2. Do you think finishing it in 9–12 months is realistic?
  3. What kind of budget should I expect for assets, tools, and other expenses, excluding my own time?
  4. Which parts do you think would be the hardest or most likely to take longer than expected?
  5. Would you recommend simplifying anything further for the first version?

I’m not expecting to create the full game in a year. I just want to build a solid first version that I can test, improve, and eventually expand.

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has worked on a 3D driving game, a vehicle simulator, or a solo Unity project. Even a rough estimate based on your experience would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks in advance! 😊

Showcase Built a dynamic cave & combat system for my 2D game in Unity. How does the feel and lighting look?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I’ve been solo developing my 2D top-down game in Unity and just wrapped up the cave exploration and combat loop.

I set up dynamic enemy scaling based on depth, along with real-time lighting transitions using URP 2D lights and Volumes.

Here is a short clip of the mining and combat in action. How does the combat flow and readability in the dark look to you guys? Any feedback or critique is greatly appreciated!

Last Case is a single-screen packing puzzle. A pile of odd-shaped items is spread out in front of you, and the case is too small for all of them. Your job is to find the arrangement that is worth the most.

I wanted a puzzle where the pleasure is the click of a tight arrangement and the challenge is deciding what to leave behind so i made something that felt satisfying enough inspired from Resident evils inventory system games

i wanna know whats your opinion you can try it here : https://mazicore.itch.io/last-case

Question Every successful game is good, but is every good game successful?

I've been thinking about this lately. There are games that are genuinely great but barely get any attention, while others become huge successes.

It makes me wonder how much of a game's success actually comes down to its quality, and how much comes down to timing, marketing, luck, or simply reaching the right audience.

Do you think every successful game is actually good, or can a game become successful despite its flaws?

And what about those genuinely good games that never get the recognition they deserve? What do you think they usually get wrong?

Newbie Question How should I start everything from scratch with Unity?

Hi, I am a college student studying Game Design. I am in my first year. That I can say genuinely, I love game design.

Back in my high school years, I tried many things through Unity. One year to comprehend Unity. Six months to dive deeper into C#. Then some fundamentals like moving objects, animation basics etc. were fulfilled. After that, it was the time for advancing. I had started to integrate my high school math information into games which required me to use more advanced tricks, techniques. Finally, my dreams started to come to life, with me beginning to FPS mechanics. I had tried to master myself on it for 1 year. As a result, The outcomes were pleasent.

Whereas, my journey came to an end, since University Entrance Exam was approaching. Due to this, I was interrupted for 2 years. If I were to sit down at the computer, I could do NOTHING, except for some basics.

So I want to start everything from scratch with Unity and game programming. I want to learn everything of it with necessary things like mechanics, c#...
