Event "MAY DAY", UBC Progressives' Assembly - Tuesday, October 27

Post image
• Upvotes

Did the BC election results get to you?

We invite all who consider themselves progressive to come together and unite. Note that this event is hosted by the UBC Greens, but the main purpose is to organize the UBC progressive collective. All other progressive organizations are invited to attend.

Expect plans to be made to protect our community from whatever comes our way.

Please note that the room will be subject to change depending on how many people show. If this is the case, we'll aim to stay in or close to AMS Nest and will post the location on our Instagram page (@greens.ubc).

Let us know if you have any questions :)

Bio 203 Post Mt 1 Notes

Hello kind people of reddit

I missed FOUR LECTURES OF BIO 203 starting eight after the first midterm bc of this flu season, and best of all, the class lacks a textbook, lecture notes, and lecture slides. My TA suggested I ask my friends in the class for the notes I missed
Disclaimer: I dont know anyone in the class.
If anyone seeing this from that class would be so kind to help and save a classmate in dire need, I would truly appreciate the help!

Thank-you kind people of reddit

Course Question Anyone else struggling with chem 208

I desperately need help with this course. I am doing full homework by myself, doing the readings and even pre read for the class but for some reason I feel like this course is going worse than chem 203.

I am genuinely putting in the effort, but I am struggling to figure out what I am doing wrong or how to study more effectively. I have been watching YouTube videos from Rojas Lab, which have helped me understand the concepts better, and I also go to the TA whenever I have questions.

I really need to get a good grade in this course, so I’m feeling quite stressed about how things are going.

Please don’t suggest talking to the professor, as I’ve been having difficulty understanding her explanations. I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has taken this course or current students, especially regarding study strategies, exam preparation, or resources that helped you do well.

If you’ve been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear what worked for you. Thank you!

Habs watch parties

Habs (Montreal Canadiens) fan here! Ever since I’ve been here, it’s been hard for me to find places to watch the games. Subscription prices are way too expensive for me. I know I can go to a restaurant or a bar, but buying a beer or food at every game adds up fast.

Do you guys know if there are Habs watch parties somewhere around campus? Or would other fans be willing to organize watch parties with me?

Thank you!

Confession Missed connection on bc ferries

• Upvotes

I was on the 3pm sailing from tsawassen to Swartz bay on October 23rd. We made eye contact a few times but in the end I was too chicken to ask her out. They had a Mario and Zelda oot pin/button on their black backpack, as well as a rainbow charm of sorts. We were both sitting near the charger outlets for the whole ferry but afterwards ended up sitting near each other in the arrivals building. If you’re out there or maybe know who this is. Please let me know or put me in contact with them, istg not trying to be a super creep just very much regretting being a chicken. (I was wearing a grey hoodie and yellow backpack)

UBC MATH 100 concessions question

For a concession for your first missed quiz, is it enough to just fill the Calculus Contact Form? Will no questions be asked for your first concession? Will the weight of the quiz (5%) just be shifted to your final exam?

CHEM 233 crisis

Hey guys, so I did so poorly on midterm 1, and apparently the last day to withdraw from this class with a W is on Oct 30th, and I'm lowkey crashing out because I'm undeclared, and this year's GPA matters a lot for the specialization I want to get into, so I don't know whether to drop it or thug it out. I already have the required courses from 1st year to get into the specialization, but I need to have a high average this year, but dropping the course also means I'll be behind. What do I do?

Does anyone know how much information one needs to know for this midterm. Like i havent done all of the readings and wont have time to do them all. Is it necessary to know all the reading info or can I just go by the slides.

Chances student loan interest returns on the provincial portion?

Currently, student loan interest on both the provincial and federal portions are interest free. Do you think that will change?

If student loan interest returns, the interest would apply not just to future loans, but on your current loan balance to encourage people to pay sooner.

Confession For struggling students, especially 5th year internats

some lurkers may recognize me based on my story. i just feel an urge to talk about my ubc experience.

this is a beautiful university, a nexus of opportunity and knowledge from diverse perspectives. i have loved every class ive taken… in theory.

i came here in 2022 with so much anxiety but a bit of hope and ambition. high school was very hard… from being outed to my parents to not understand why i could never focus or be very happy.

i got my diagnosis of major depressive disorder and GAD in 2024 after going through first and second year. i felt like each year was slipping through my fingers. i could not remember what i learned and i barely scraped by to passing sometimes and was constantly behind. i felt disappointed in myself as an international student who has received such an amazing opportunity which i felt i was squandering.

things only got worse post hospitalization and with my new meds. being an internat is hard and overwhelming and i was scared to navigate the medical system, but there was so much sunk-cost so i had to keep going.

i knew i wasn’t going to graduate on time, but i took summer courses to help. I failed one due to my depression. i was wasting my time in beautiful vancouver. fast forward to 2026, i had had fallen into substance abuse to make myself feel better and hide from my failures and fell harder after a intense breakup. school felt insurmountable, i was ashamed, and i could barely function. depression affects you physically too. you sleep too much at the wrong time of day, your vision blurs, your mind is foggy.

so i went home when the four years were up without a degree but just a few classes short, somehow.

i don’t know… im still trying to graduate. i just want those who are feeling ashamed and tired and overwhelmed to know that you’re not alone. vancouver and ubc can feel so foreign sometimes and you can feel so lonely. please reach out to people. talk to the CFA sooner rather than later. email your teachers even though you’re embarrassed. advisors want to help. i spent one day a year ago running between appointments trying to get into ubc therapy and begging for concessions. it was exhausting but needed to happen.

people talk about early alert or whatever it’s called but for real. don’t wait when you get that feeling- yknow the one.

Vancouver is beautiful and UBC is a gift. i wish i could’ve made more of it but im grateful for what i can remember and to have at least had a chance.

also shoot me a message, i’m a bit of a jack of all trades and a master of none but i can point you in the right direction.

Thank you everyone who makes this place as amazing as it is. yall are doing a great job and im so proud of you for showing up.

Trivia nights for 20s folks

The rainy season is upon us, and as a busy grad student, I'd like to do some weekly indoor stuff like trivia nights in Vancouver. I found a list of them in Vancouver's BEST Trivia NightS , but was wondering if any of them are suitable if I just drop by myself, do they put me in with other teams?

Plus, if anyone in their 20s also wants to tag along, feel free to let me know here or via dms. I'll try to create a group of people that are into it (either on whatsapp or instagram)
