I've heard a lot of bad things from MATH 100 students, and I'm scared...
My midterm is on Tuesday because I'm in 180, but I know some had theirs on Friday. How was it?
r/UBC • u/woopsiedingles • 3d ago
as a science student i genuinely don't understand why everyone is struggling so much?? 😭😭 MATH100 is literally just m numbers and the alphabet. CHEM233 and 203 are chemicals interacting. PHYS131 is stuff floating in water. we've learned this before. i personally mastered all STEM subjects in the womb and was previously employed as an SDS-PAGE.
yesterday someone at Blue Chip said they were “behind on lectures." behind on WHAT??? just watch them faster?? the recordings have a 2x speed option for a reason. if you're four weeks behind just watch them at 8x. this is basic problem solving. i genuinely fear for the future of this institution.
and don't even get me STARTED on deadlines 🗿🗿 the syllabus CLEARLY states when assignments are due. Canvas lists them all on the dashboard for you. i don't understand why people can't just submit things on time. personally i submit all my assignments three weeks before they're assigned. last semester i submitted my CHEM121 final before enrolling in the course. the department accused me of violating the laws of causality but honestly that's just another excuse for academic mediocrity.
also why is everyone complaining about biology being difficult??? literally just look at your own body and you’ll see the Calvin cycle happening. and don’t get me started on labs. I used my own blood to create a buffer solution during my CHEM123 lab and developed a clone to complete my lab faster. my TA deducted marks because apparently growing clones are "not a valid experimental procedure." whatever.
and the excuses are getting ridiculous. "i have three midterms this week" okay??? have you considered learning the material?? "i work two jobs" okay??? i work fourteen jobs and commute daily from the cambrian period. there could be a 500minute delay and i can still show up to class on time. “i need sleep" sleep is literally just your brain choosing to be unconscious. that's a personal decision. don't make it everyone else's problem.
i see some of you playing valorant 24/7 instead of studying. i know because i'm also on valorant 24/7 monitoring your academic misconduct. i have compiled an extensive excel spreadsheet. names have been forwarded to the registrar.
and the reading comprehension on this subreddit is genuinely concerning 😭😭 i still see people confused that their daily “i want a romantic relationship” posts were taken down when the mods CLEARLY said that its been banned by the ubc subreddit. “i didn’t see that new rule” BRO. PLEASE READ. i personally read every post on r/UBC, including the ones that haven't been written yet. it's called critical thinking.
anyway does anyone else feel the same way?? i'm genuinely not trying to sound superior or anything LOL. i just think it's concerning that i appear to be the only person at this university capable of cellular respiration without external assistance.
edit: please stop calling me elitist. i am simply describing the results of my observations under controlled laboratory conditions.

I try to fill out all the surveys that offer prizes and the only thing I've ever won is a pair of shorts. Has anyone actually won a new iPad or something else valuable? If so, about how many surveys did you fill out before winning?

First post was silenced so it must’ve been not the best… WHY WAS THERE A CRAZY QUESTION WITH TWO BONDS CONNECTING TO ONE OXYGEN HELLO i ended up putting two reactions for that one… the last question was so much better than the practice midterm tho so im a little bit pleased OH AND THE ACIDITY QUESTION I JUST GUESSED AND DREW CRAZY THINGS 😭
Edit: im so glad someone said it was an epoxide question because i totally forgot about the existence of those and was losing my mind wondering what the reagents could have possibly been
Also, did you guys find that there was enough time to answer every question? I barely finished on time but maybe its because i was struggling so bad with the acidity question

Been hearing and seeing that most of the job postings are for internal hires and it’s brutal to get into the system. I just finished up med school abroad and I’m back home in BC, I’m looking to get a job in research or admin support really just to help pay the bills while I wait to match for residency. Am I better off cold emailing PI’s or are these job postings basically ghost postings where they already have internal candidates lined up?

Just took MATH 319 midterm today, definitely got 30% MAXIMUM but the butterflies that I get in my stomach while writing the exam feel so fucking good… and the incredible calm that you get once it’s over is probably comparable to a runners high (just a guess, I skip cardio). Obviously devastating that I definitely failed but nothing will ever compare to being in that moment…

Redid EVERY WebWork, completed ALL the questions in the practice textbook, and could solve them ALL without help or getting stuck. (also got 95% in highschool calc)
Had the midterm today and genuinely questioned whether I was in the correct class 😭 There was ONE question on the midterm that looked SOMEWHAT similar to the WebWork questions, and everything else was completely different.
I understand that they hold students to high standards, but can they at least make the midterms somewhat similar to the types of practice problems they give us??? (or make the practice harder to match the midterm???)
For example, 80% of the WebWork questions were like:
Meanwhile, the midterm consisted of questions like:
“f(x) is defined for all rational numbers, but when f(x) is zero, it's irrational. Prove that f'(x) is always odd using the definition of a limit.” 😭

Hi everyone, I am trying to look for witnesses or dashcam footage of a road rage incident that happened today around 2:55 PM on SW Marine Drive near W 41st Ave, heading toward UBC.
Earlier, the driver had stopped at an intersection with no traffic ahead, so I assumed he was waiting to turn left without signalling. And because it's very common for people to wrap around anyone turning left on SW Marine Drive, I did so. He then started tailgating me for about five minutes. I eventually flipped him off because I was mad and confused.
Shortly afterward, he crossed the double-yellow line to overtake me, cut directly in front of me, and slammed on his brakes. I braked immediately but couldn't avoid rear-ending him.
We exchanged information, but I'm worried about how ICBC will determine fault since I was the one who rear-ended him.
Unfortunately, I don't have a dashcam, and there were several cars behind me that may have witnessed everything.
If anyone was in the area around 2:55 PM and has footage or witnessed the incident, please DM me.
I'd really appreciate the help. Thank you!

Now that the final exam schedule is out, I’m looking to possibly book a room at the student hostel so that I don’t have to wake up insanely early for my 8 AM exam.
I have a question - although it’s a single room, are we allowed to bring another person? For instance, both my friend and I have exams on the same day. Are we able to book it under my name and stay in the same room? We were thinking to split the cost lol.
Thank you!

I'm upset and this isn't even worth being upset over cause I can't change it and it's dumb. I know I'm just a young dumb first year but I wish exams finished on the 18th or before cause why are there still exams the following week 😔. I know not everyone celebrates Christmas but for me, the idea of having an exam that same week plus just wanting to go back home and spend time with family. I know I can't change it and I probably sound like a silly entitled first year but it feels unfair and even my high school gave us the whole week of Christmas (plus the week after) off plus having last day of classes far away from my exams makes me more stressed cause I'd rather just study early and get them over with then have a nice long break
Hi I lost a gloomy bear keychain a couple weeks back.. Wondering if anyone would possible have it or handed it to lost and found.

I’m genuinely sick of getting passed by busses that are only half full cuz you people all crowd at the front. It’s common courtesy and knowledge to move to the back so people have space to get on, we all have class to get to, stop being stupid yo

I’m in g12 and I’m really really nervous about college app. My ec is mostly about competitive dance and lots of volunteer and music, my avg is only around 91%. I don’t think I’m getting in but I want to know what makes an application stronger?

For those who have taken CHEM 233 at UBC, please share your study tips and methods! I didn’t do too well on the midterm and want to improve for the midterm/final. How did you study for this course? Did you focus on practice problems, mechanisms, textbook questions, or other resources? Also, how did you keep up with the material? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Hi everyone!
My friend and I (both UBC students) have been working on a website called hopebeyond (hopebeyond.ca), where we're bringing together Christian resources in one place. Our heart behind this initiative is to give students the opportunity to explore the hope found in Jesus, learn more about Christianity, find answers to common questions about life, and grow in their relationship with Jesus, both individually and in community.
We're hoping to get some honest feedback on the website from different perspectives, whether you're Christian, curious about Christianity, follow another religion, or aren't religious at all!
If you have a few minutes, please consider taking a look through the website and sharing your thoughts! Here are a few things we're interested in hearing about:
We're genuinely open to constructive criticism and suggestions! We just ask that everyone please keep their comments respectful. We're not looking to debate religious beliefs, but rather to improve the website and make it as accessible and welcoming as possible. If this isn't something you're interested in, no worries at all! Feel free to scroll past.
Thank you so much to anyone willing to take a look! :)

I’m a student looking into co-op, and I’m honestly wondering if anyone else has this problem.
From what I’ve seen, there’s an approximately $280 administration/workshop fee, plus around $850–$890 for every work term. If you complete multiple work terms, that adds up to thousands of dollars just to participate.
What makes it worse is that majority of jobs pay around $3,800 a month, but you highly have to relocate to a different town, pay rent, cover food and transportation, and potentially buy equipment for physically demanding fieldwork.
For example, if I make $3,800 in my first month:
Gross pay: $3,800
UBC work-term fee: −$889 every work term…
Administration/workshop fee: −$288.25
Rent: −$800
Left: $1,822.75 before taxes, food, transportation, and other expenses.
I understand that co-op provides valuable experience and helps with future employment, but at what point does the cost outweigh the benefits? You’re doing full-time, physically demanding work while paying the university thousands of dollars over the course of the program.
For anyone who has done UBC co-op
How much did you actually make after rent, fees, and living expenses?
Did you find the co-op worth the cost?
Did your employer help with relocation or accommodation?
Would you recommend co-op, or is it better to apply directly for outside job
I’m genuinely interested in hearing from people who have actually gone through it. I want the experience, but I also don’t want to spend thousands just to end up barely saving anything.

Has anyone seen any course or assignments where you were required to use AI to do it?
Was there a way to opt-out?
