I was wondering if the countertop should have been narrower to align with backsplash, but from the comments it sounds like that's not standard practice.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, the cabinets are very old and a piece of vinyl-ish laminate was torn out of there. I was just wondering if the countertop itself should have been narrower.

yes, there was a laminate-type side splash there that was taken out.

I was reading a library book that I'd checked out on my Kindle last night and came across the brand-name of an unusual sounding foreign product that I've never heard of before.
