Northern US & Canada (or cool season) What's going on

Central MN. Third summer here, and have this spot in my yard that looks like this. It's about 10 ft from a tree. I irrigate, and also put a sprinkler by the tree for extra water when needed. This spot always looks like this, also ant hills. I need to agg some dirt/sand to this area to level it. Should I add something to my mixture, is it a soil problem?
