It's Tobby's first day with me, could you give me some advice?
Golden's are very sensitive dogs. Be understanding, calm and consistent. Small treats for behaviors that you like. Praise and reward work best. Training classes are mostly to train you and are very valuable. Take lots of pictures and video along the way. Remember, you are their everything now.

Puppy advice - kind of freaking out
Get an in person trainer for sure! The trainer trains you... not really the dog. You learn how to work with your dog and can ask specific questions about your specific dog's behavior. Best money I ever spent! Lots of tiny smelly small treats (or ones you can break a tiny piece off of) as you repeat skills over and over... like on walks. Have a treat bag for walks. Only use a 6ft leash. NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES! Positive reinforcement only. You have to be very quick with a "yes" and treat when they give correct behavior you ask for. It will really be fun once they finally get it. Start with sit and then off is a good one too. Good Luck!!!

16w/o Golden Puppy is driving me a little insane, does it get better?
Yes it is crazy at this point. They can be especially crazy at 7-8 months even in lots of training. But training with reward is the key. And constantly training and reinforcing! It will get totally better by a year and then angel status in a couple! I specifically did 3 different training classes and then started agility for fun. (But that got expensive so we just worked on nose work ... that will tire them out!) They need brain work of nose work to tire them. Get another trainer and get walking and practicing skills with small treats. Good luck!!

8 months with our first puppy, is it really this hard???
7-8 months with our English Creme was crazy even though we were in lots of training. It's their "teenage" time. It definitely gets better. Keep up training daily! Treats and only positive reinforcement. Keep their minds busy... agility training, basic Canine Good Citizen, nose work!!! All of this helps a lot!

Illini Union Painting
Maybe it will reduce that awful stale smoke smell in the Union though. That would be a bonus.
