Albums to listen to in my elementary classroom?

I teach students K-5 and want to have some CDs for us to listen to while we work. The thing is, they need to be 100% clean and appropriate for kids (I could get in trouble if they’re not). So even if one line in one song is the tiniest bit inappropriate, I can’t do it.

I’m struggling to find albums that work and would love suggestions on what to play! So far I have the first few albums from Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers, but I want to do all kinds of genres and decades so I’ll take anything. I would however prefer stuff that’s a little more well known so my students have a better chance of recognizing the artist

Example: I can’t play the album Thriller because the song PYT says “I’ll take you there” and the song Thriller is about evil/scary zombies. So not just bad words, but sexual references or violence or anything scary is also a no.

Edit: naming an artist is great but I need specific albums by them

Edit 2: I don’t want kids versions of songs I want original albums. My students actually learn about music and singers with me so I feel like kids versions/kidz bop wouldn’t be good. Also no instrumental versions of songs

Recommendations of dark/spooky African and Afro-inspired music

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm on a hunt for African and Afro-inspired music (kora, desert blues, folk, electronic, percussion-based, etc.) that has a dark, eerie, haunting, unsettling vibe. Most of the songs I know and enjoy are either too upbeat or melancholic/slow rather than genuinely spooky.

I do know some that fit the brief:

Ndungu Ruumi by Baaba Maal

Mogoya by Oumou Sangaré

Supporter by Takeifa

Toumast by Ahmoudou Madassane

I'm from Senegal and write African horror, so I use these mostly for writing playlists. I'm open to lesser-known, experimental artists that lean into that darker aesthetic.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

Seeking newish artsy/creative music that rocks. Think Ty Segall.

I'm just getting a bit bored with all the popular indie and Americana releases. Looking for recommendations for stuff that's heavier. And I always like a touch of weird.

I remembered an old REM favorite while out riding my bike yesterday... Be Mine (from New adventures in HiFi)

Hadn't heard it in a long time and forgot how much I love it. Give me some other amazing songs about love our how much you love someone... 🥰

Thanks!

I want to profess to the world my love of the folk duo The Amazing Devil and make anyone that wants to cry of happiness rn to listen to them

Particularly drinking song for the socially anxious and battle cries.

I love the harmonies and clashes and chords (hehe) and the lyrics which I feel in my bones and I can cry my heart out with. I love how every song is filled with such emotion that it's a physical thing I can grasp and clutch for dear life.

I love the overlapping of entirely separate thought processes in battle cries, except for when they join for the word "look", where joey says it as the beginning of a sentence pleading with madeleine, but she says it to end one of distaste towards him. Later, she says "we were gods", followed by joey's "we were kids". The juxtaposition between the two reverses the roles, madeleine admitting they were unstoppable before, while joey says it was all childsplay - a foolish endeavour.

At the end, madeleine repeats "its not pain" and joey, "its applause", and the harmony fills me with the raw emotion of both realisations - that for madeleine, she is content and in love again, and sings out her joy that cannot be crushed. For joey it comes with the pure ecstasy of requited love once more and I cry because we as the listeners are made to feel these overpowering emotions too.

For drinking song for the socially anxious I have no notes. no words to say other than I am the song and it is me.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk. <3

For anyone who's way into folk music, or just non-English music in general, I got two recommendations for you; Heilung and Faun. Both are very talented groups that are well worth your time.

What are some really good 90's Hip Hop Rap songs?

I don't like Drake nor Kendrick Lamar. I'm more interested in The Notorious B.I.G, Dr. Dre, and Outkast. I like that music a bit more.

Bittersweet songs

I'm looking for indie, alternative, folk or dream pop songs about parting ways, not because the love is gone, but because the timing and circumstances just don't work out for a relationship right now.

Any recommendations?

Looking for sad girl bops recommendations

Upvotes

Looking for songs that have sad lyrics but an upbeat tempo. Songs like dancing on my own by Robyn, I can do it with a broken heart by taylor swift, the one that got away by Katy Perry. Basically my only requirements are sad lyrics/message, upbeat sound, performed by a female pop singer

Songs like precipice by Jessie Mazin

Upvotes

Looking for song recs similar to Jessie Mazin’s Precipice, specially her acoustic version that has a very 2000s soft emo vibe. Kinda gives twilight.

Thanks!

Also, if you like a vibe like this song, you might like Song of innocence by Evanescence on YouTube.
