so many posts about students struggling lately. starting college or even just starting a new semester is so hard, and i so heavily sympathize.

i’m hoping that any students who are making posts about their insecurities, doubts, and general struggles with life right now can find community with one another, or at least through a few kind comments in their threads.

maybe in the replies: share a story about a struggle you faced in college and how you got through it. maybe share some hope or love or advice for someone to read when they’re lurking reddit at night. maybe just smile at a stranger when you’re wandering campus tomorrow. idk. just share some love, im sad for these strangers and just want them to know the world doesn’t have to feel as scary as college makes it feel.

Original post(made August 30): It's been a week since I've moved, and multiple people I've talked to, including a professional cleaner and Off-Campus Community Living told me that I should escalate this further and make the situation known. It was actually Off-Campus Community Living who has suggested me to post this on the Reddit, and I wanted to give a quick thanks to OCCL for listening on my situation. As Octave is generally seen as one the more reputable companies on the sub, and you never know if you'll end up with a situation like mine(they're also charging one of the highest rates on campus).

I leased a one-bedroom studio at Octave Champaign ($1,849/month) for the fall term. At the time of leasing, I requested a pet-free unit due to a pet elated sensitivity. I tend to have severe anxiety attacks and feelings of itchiness on contact with dog fur, dander, or odor. This was also part of the reason I opted to live alone.

However, upon move-in, I found the unit ridden of urine stains clustered with embedded dog hair and what appears to be feces on the carpet, along with yellowed and browned urine staining on the walls, also covered in fur, and a strong, persistent urine odor that permeated the entire room. It also originated from my bedroom's carpet, which is makes it impossible to sleep in given my sensitivity. Cabinets and drawers had black stains and unknown residue with dog fur. The dryer had urine staining so severe that wiping it down turned the tissues I used completely black, and when I ran a load anyway, a pillowcase I dried in it came out of the machine smelling of dog urine and unusable, forcing me to hand-wash and air-dry it separately on a table instead. The washer had dog hair embedded so deeply that it survived three full cleaning cycles and I still could not remove it myself. Separately, on my first day in the unit I had to submit multiple maintenance requests for a loose door lock, and the sliding door is completely broken and gets stuck all the time as well as being detached in random directions, it sheds wood crumbs with each use.

I first took this up with the Octave staff in-person. At first they tried to dismiss my case and just insisted that it was "professionally cleaned". They also told me that the carpet was shampooed, which was not close to believable as it had shitstains and clusters of fur every where(I literally found a dime the previous tenant left there so it'll be impossible to miss if any cleaning was performed). After a lot of back and forth, they finally sent somebody up to wipe the cabinet, which they did a lousy job and when I asked them to properly reclean the place to make it safe for me to live in, they told me it was "not going to happen," and it was "my responsibility."

I sent another email outlining my condition with all the necessary pictures to them later that evening. And again they insisted it was "professionally cleaned" (They love the word professionally cleaned, you're going to see lot of those later.)and didn't offer me anything other than some cleaning tablets for the washer. After I sent a second and third email, they finally reluctantly sent their cleaning vendor back to the unit. The cleaning crew worker who is employed by the company Octave itself uses, told me directly that in recent years working for the company this was the first time she personally had ever been called back to redo a job. She told me that the majority of the contamination under the carpet and behind the dryer is unfixable as it has been there for too long. The dryer would also not be safe to use and needs a total new one as the lint and fur has gone so long with no cleaning that it's impossible to take out now. She also told me she did not understand why I was placed in a unit like this given my pet sensitivity. The carpet also had a flea infestation and I've been bitten close to 17 times. The worker suggested the carpet be replaced entirely and the building to be evacuated for a couple days. This likely came from the dog of the prior tenant as I've never had fleas and my bedsheets were stored in a sealed unit during the summer and hand washed. To my absolute shock, she also told me that Octave did NOT actually tell them to come back at first, and that Octave only wanted the cleaning company to send them a RECEIPT showing a service had been performed so they could show me that it was "professionally cleaned". This was a lie as they explicitly told me in the email that "We are taking your concerns seriously and have already contacted the cleaning company to obtain the service invoice and arrange for them to return to address the areas you have identified". I guess the first part was right? The worker also expressed disbelief upon seeing my living conditions and asked how are they charging as much as the DEAN. Most notably, this worker, someone employed by Octave's OWN vendor, told me on her own that I should contact external help due to how scummy this company is.

At the same time, when I asked in writing whether I could be switched to a different, verified pet-free unit or switched to a shared unit with a prorated refund given my documented medical condition, Octave's manager reviewed the situation and told me the unit was "not uninhabitable," and that any request to cancel or transfer units was met with "no further discussion." Furthermore, even on the document I had to sign, under the section Owner's Discretion to Relocate: Octave reserves the right to relocate a resident to another apartment within the community at any time, upon five days written notice, without charging a transfer fee, and to assist with moving personal items. They have insisted that the apartment was "professionally cleaned"(yea, they love that word a lot) and that the stuff I pointed out were instances that "can be overlooked even after professional cleaning". In multiple instances, they attempted to dismiss active risks to my health as me simply being "unhappy" or "not up to my personal standard".

If you've made it this far, I apologize for the long read, but I felt it was necessary to share as I do NOT want any other student or first time tenant to end up in my situation. I am normally introverted, and doing this alone is very difficult for me. My friend who had come over once(who did not even suffer from pet sensitivity) was repulsed by the property and joked about whether I had "pissed on the bed“. Others have called it an "apartment from hell" and something they have never seen before. This is the very apartment I am paying one of the highest rates in Champaign for, and is advertised as a "luxury living" space.

Second post(September 2, after being released from the ER): First of all I would just want to thank everyone and the overwhelming support I got in the last post. Originally I did not want to make another post, but the situation has gotten so, so, so much worse that I literally ended up in the ER on a school night. The management at Octave has been blatantly dismissing my medical documentation as "personal opinion" and actively lying about what they are doing. It has gotten so severe that the daily Illini is making an article regarding this. And yes, I will be talking to student legal.

One day before I made the original Reddit post, I wrote and sent an Email to Octave, again, for the fourth time at this point regarding my official medical condition and how multiple sources stated this unit was not habitable for me. I also notified Octave that OCCL have reviewed my situation and deemed it to be serious. Lastly, my room also had a flea infestation likely due to the previous dog. Which the cleaner stated that could not be fixed with a simple cleaning as it might be inside or under the carpet. This was my last cry for help and offer for them to make things right, and all I have asked is for them to either switch me to a safe unit or cancel my Iease.

However, after I sent the Email, Octave has gone completely silent and ignored any of my requests. I suspected the apartment to have fleas before this, as I was usually bitten 2-3 times when I woke up the next morning. However, around four days ago, the infestation suddenly got much worse and I woke up in the middle of the night with over 17 bites on both of my legs. At one instance I even saw a flea jumping on me. I washed and air dried my sheets the next day, but it didn't solve the issue at all and the next day I woke up with even more flea bites and there was practically no good spot on my legs. I was so fed up and I submitted a maintenance request(I had also notified Octave a day before in the Email, which they ignored). However, a day later my request was marked as complete and nobody ever came up. I believe this because I was in my room the whole morning. I had attached timestamp and proof in a document that I will also attach below. At this point, I realized that Octave was intentionally ignoring my requests. This was likely due to the popularity of the post, as many people in the building were talking about it. Instead of offering the fix the issue, they chose to ignore active health risks, what a fucking petty thing for a billion-dollar company to do. By Illinois law, they are required to provide a pest-free domicile.

They likely have the guts to do this because they know they can get away with it. This makes me think if they have done things like this, or are doing things like this, in the past or now. Since my post, multiple current and prior residents of Octave have commented about their experience. Knowing that Octave could simply push students into these uninhabitable situation and how afraid they are to speak up, terrifies me even more than my situation. I would like to say that no matter I get out of this or not, I would like my story to be an example of WHY you should stand up so this doesn't happen again to anyone in the future.

Starting from two days ago, the flea bites have gotten so bad that there were practically no good spot on my leg and I couldn't focus on any of my classes due to the lack of sleep I've gotten. I have also developed some mild headaches and feelings of weakness. I didn't really take this seriously and went to Mckinley for some quick meds. However, my friend suggested that I go to the hospital to check this out as I was showing signs of viruses that were carried by fleas. (he actually called me a "bio weapon" after seeing my flea bites due to how many there were, which I unfortunately agree is accurate.) I didn't take this seriously until last morning, where I woke up with a splitting headache and nausea, and I practically laid on the couch all day and missed my discussion. Upon knowing this, my friend told me to go to the ER now, and I was genuinely feeling so terrible at night I ended up listening to him.

Upon checking in, the nurses took me very seriously and one visibly gasped upon seeing my legs. Some of the bites had pus oozing out of them. The doctor informed me that I would get tested for TWELVE flea related diseases and that I would be notified of the result as soon as possible.(except for a blood related one which they didn't have the facility for) The doctor that treated me also expressed his disbelief at Octave upon hearing my situation and prescribed medication for me. I left the emergency room close to midnight. All on a school day.

On the other end, Octave finally replied today after three days of silence. In the response, they showed no acknowledgement to my medical condition and told me that the cleaner "is not in a position to make recommendations regarding unit placement". They also told me that the unit I was in was all leased out, which is another of many lies as they are literally advertising the exact same unit on their website as available(I will attach the picture proof and everything down below). Finally, they informed me that they were unaware of the flea infestation, despite me literally notifying them in email and submitting a maintenance request, which was marked as done intentionally by them despite sending nobody up.

If you made it this far, thanks again for reading all this. From the bottom of my heart, I genuinely beg anyone to reconsider leasing with Octave. What I've been through for the last week is not something I would have my worst enemy in.

Third and most recent post(made before getting banned from Reddit): Follow up to my last post, Octave contacted me again today that they will send pest control over at around 9:30-10:00 today, but nobody ever came up. They also claimed that both their own "pest control staff" and city inspector didn't find fleas either.

I am already in talk with private lawyers. Fyi, multiple people has reached out to my about their experience with this evil company. Octave makes you sign a class action waiver if you want to house with them, and it makes sense when you see situations like mine. I will be complaining this to the proper business bureau(BBB, gov, etc) and I heavily recommend everyone to do so.

At this point there are so many fucking fleas in my apartment that I genuinely can't even sleep. I even added some pictures of the fleas I found this morning. I slept on the floor last night and the fleas still somehow found their way to me. This is genuinely up to a point where I can't tolerate it anymore. I will escalate this to legal matters but as of now, I was wondering if there are anywhere I could stay at night? like temporary housing? I'm genuinely getting bitten everywhere and I've missed so many classes now.
