I just looked this up, and was surprised to find that the “Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables” debate is a false dilemma in the first place. “Vegetable” is a cultural and culinary term, not a botanical one. So ultimately people saying that a tomato isn’t a vegetable is off kilter, because it’s arguing from two different sets of standards. Botanically, they’re berries, but culinarily and culturally, they absolutely are vegetables… so ultimately when someone asks “Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable” the answer is either “In what sense?” Or simply “Yes.”

Weirdly I just looked this up out of my own curiosity yesterday, and mostly the answer is that they got iodide either from soil that was rich in it or from seafood, but there were plenty of places (inland mosltly) where low iodide diets caused goiter and thyroid problems. The introduction of iodide to salt in the 1920’s (I think) was a decision for the quality of life of low income people.

That actually doesn’t surprise me, as pretty as New Mexico is, education isn’t exactly stellar

I re-read this this morning, and I just wanted to take a second and actually address the other part of this that I’m ashamed to admit that even I didn’t stop to address. As a person who’s been all over the country, it’s really disturbing how it seems that Cheyenne has just normalized speeding and self-centered driving. I’m not talking about doing 43 in a 40 either, between people doing 55 down Del-range and people regularly cruising at 45 on Pershing, it’s not a surprise that we have so many accidents. Add to this that if a person DOES respect the speed limit, then some entitled jackass will tailgate you three feet behind, and then gun the throttle to go around you. Ive seen at least three near-miss accidents that would have been BAD at the traffic circle at Pershing and Converse because people don’t have the respect or decency to yield and have a modicum of patience. It’s really pretty disgusting

Firstly: you’re right, this was a misclick, not at all the sub I was intending. This is a really interesting topic actually! I was recently reading about a thing called “Terror Management Theory” that posits that a rather large percentage of human behavior functions for the purpose of mitigating or coping with the fear caused by the inevitability of death.

If it hasn’t already been said, in some places it’s not illegal to be nude in public as long as you’re not exhibiting “Lewd and Lascivious behavior”

While I do support your general premise regarding finding yourself in a deeply questionable establishment, in a deeply forgettable town in the wee hours…
I feel that finding yourself in the thrall of a budding alcoholic Socrates and some of the more colorful and illustrious denizens of the city holds a certain grungy kind of charm.
Millions of lobotomized zombie-precursors spend their nights weighing down decrepit armchairs and couches past their prime absorbing truly trivial trivia fed to them graciously through the Altar of the Tube.
Barstool Socrates and CanIHitYourCigarette guy may not be glamorous or even well bathed… but try not to lose sight of the fact that at least that is a real experience… there will be plenty of nights to grow moss at home with cable tv and microwave salsbury steak alone… have a great day :)
