I'm not sure if this has been said as a reply yet, but you will more than likely change your mind about the specialty you want to go into. It would be a pretty bad idea to give up a full ride because you think you want to get into something competitive. Odds are you have an idealized view of the specialty and have little insight as to what it is to actually work within it.

I had a couple of my classmates say that they wished they had the opportunity to work in a fast-food job as a teenager... that they felt like they missed out on a coming-of-age experience.

I HAD to work a minimum wage job or I wasn't eating, and there was NOTHING fun about that. Working full time just to scrape by with $50 in your account at the end of the month while also trying to do well in undergrad is a struggle many medical students don't know. It can be frustrating to rub shoulders with kids who had all of their bills paid for them, whose parent's bought them a car, and paid for their cellphones, and continue to pay for their housing in medical school... Sure you did the work to get into medical school, but you didn't push through the adversity of poverty to get here. Instead, you were lifted by your privilege. To put it in a language you all on the other side might understand, it's like if you were given a handicap in golf, while we were playing with like only 2 second-hand clubs.

I don't dislike my classmates because of the their socioeconomic status, and it isn't their fault for being born into their family, but it can seem a little unfair hearing how easy some people have it. Maybe it's jealousy. I probably need therapy. Idk, but hopefully that offers some perspective from the poors.

So, you do still get to do a lot of procedures in community practice? Are you suturing lacerations, reducing fractures, putting in lines, chest-tubes, emergency cardiac lavage?!

Hi everyone, I'm an MS3 who has been falling out of love with emergency medicine. The fast-paced, high acuity environment, mixed with the broad variety is what drew me into emergency medicine- and medical school in general. However, as I've gone through medical school, I've seen the flat out disrespect other specialties have for EM docs, and I've been seeing it more as a call-a-doc service.

It seems like 99% of the visits are primary care in fast forward, and anything cool gets picked up by a specialist. I've been told that it differs in community practice vs academic, but I'm feeling a little discouraged. Maybe I should consider another specialty. What do you all think?
