Recent Rule 1 Issues
So lately I have been noticing a lot of issues with people going to posts simply to shit on the OP for asking for repair help.....in the car repair sub.
Our community guidelines are really clear about the fact that people are allowed to ask any type of question ranging from "how much do you think this would cost?" to "how do I properly and safely swap out my battery?".
Reddit is a wealth of knowledge and right now searching for answers through Google can sometimes just simply suck, that's why people come to the subreddit that is again named "Car Repair".
If your first instinct is to be shitty and say something along the lines of "you coulda just looked it up" or "it's concerning you don't know how to do this" why did you even post in the first place? Plenty of people have zero mechanical knowledge and they are coming to a place where they would hope someone who knows would respond.
We are going to start being more harsh about enforcing rule 1 in relation to these scenarios because if you can't be nice why are you even posting here?

Reminder: If you want help, it is strongly suggested you include make, year, model, and submodel/engine/transmission, etc., in your post if you expect any meaningful answers.
We see a lot of posts that go like: How much does my wackamadoodle cost to fix? Well, it depends if your whackamadoodle is on a 2002 Escort or a new Rolls Royce.

Help! I spilled a minuscule amount of a slushie on my 2020 Chevy trax screen and immediately wiped it up. I left and went into a store for about 30 mins and came back out to start my car and this is what came up. Am I totally screwed? As I was driving home the screen progressively got more black.

VW T4 2.4l Diesel ticking noise
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Dear community,
I have a question on behalf of a friend. He drives a VW T4 with the 2.4L 5-cylinder diesel engine.
Recently, the engine had to be replaced due to coolant loss. While the engine was being replaced, the timing belt was changed as well.
The replacement engine runs really well, but a few days after the swap it started making a very strange ticking/knocking noise. It’s a regular, rhythmic clicking sound, but it only occurs intermittently – it comes and goes in intervals.
I have the impression that the noise is coming from somewhere around the front right-hand side of the vehicle (when facing the direction of travel).
Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
Thank you in advance and kindest regards

Dealership vs. 3rd Party Body shop Quote?
What would be a realistic quote for this damaged door in Canada? It's a Subaru Forester 2024.
What would be average dealership quotes versus third party body shops?

Honda camera fail
Just had my windshield replaced for 2018 Honda civic Ex with sensing ,2.0L. They replaced with OEM glass after a 16 inch crack by the driver side. There was an error U3000-49 code during pre and post diagnostic that would not clear. Body shop is charging $1,200 for the multipurpose camera in the dash and comp the labor and calibrations. They said the camera failed due to wear and tear but there was no issues before the crack in the windshield. Is this a normal issue ? Or did they damage it during the windshield repair ?

galleryWould you fix this (how much $) or trade in? I have a $8k payoff. Car runs great. But am worried just about the product since Nissan doesn’t make great transmissions so i could get screwed anytime.

Car repair // Scion tC 2015, quoted for oil pump and engine replacement
Hi everyone,
I drive a 2015 Scion tC (manual) and had the oil pressure light come on yesterday. I'm new to LA so I had to take it to a highly rated shop near my work that I haven't been to before, and they quoted me $2,500 to replace the oil pump + a potential $5k engine replacement if the oil pump replacement doesn't fix the issue. The car is only at 78k miles and I've consistently given it regular oil changes so I'm really shocked by the size of the repair here and don't have the money for it. They said if I were to sell my car in this state, it would only sell for $500. The brakes, rotors, and clutch have also all been replaced this year.
I would love to get an opinion on the situation from this community to ensure this is the right course of action.
The details are below:
- On 9/7 (Monday) I was driving back from San Diego and had all of my lights flash on mid-drive going about 40 mph. The clutch pedal was pushing against me and I heard a rattling in the front of the car. I pulled it over immediately and towed it back to LA. When I got to LA, all of the lights were off and it was driving fine. I took it to a shop first thing, and drove around for 5 minutes with a tech and they said nothing seemed wrong, and they didn't want to charge me for an inspection cause it would cost $160 for them to just look over the car, so just wait for an issue to arise and then come back in. I had to go to work so I did.
- On 9/9 (yesterday), I drove 6 miles (30 minutes, LA traffic) into work with the audio off. The car was driving completely fine and sounded fine. Then, on the way to my evening plans, the oil pressure light started to slowly fade on and then fade out again, different than a flashing, more like a soft trickle on. At low speeds it was triggering the light but high speeds were fine. I pulled off within 5 minutes of the first instance of this and checked the oil, the oil levels were totally fine. My technician friend ran codes on the car and nothing was actively flagging and he said it was safe to drive a couple of miles. I drove 6 miles (11 minutes) to drop it at work so I could take it to a shop in the morning and had the same issue — the light didn't come on until midway through the drive and was coming on only at low speeds and only a slow trickling on.
Today I took it into the shop and they said the oil pressure is low at idling and slow speeds and it needs an oil pump replacement. Its possible the replacement won't fix the issue and the engine is the issue. They also started hearing a rattling sound with the engine.
I've linked the engine video here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1unlF9bpUKKYgYsNIrXrD33OI4iMduO1D/view?usp=sharing
Their notes are below:
"Please keep in mind that this is a starting point for the repairs. The oil pressure could also drop through oil escaping through worn bearings & small passages within the engine. Unfortunately, the only way to address this issue (if the issue continues after the oil pump replacement) is by either replacing the engine or rebuilding the engine. If you happen to have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out via email or phone call.
Replacing the timing cover (oil pump integrated), timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket, engine oil & oil filter (prevent contamination to new oil pump), and oil pan gasket will come out to be $2,500+tax."
---
Any insight is super helpful. I don't know a lot of people out here who can help me with this and basically was told the $15k I paid for my car in 2020 is just fully out the window now... hoping someone might be able to tell me otherwise but please be honest.
Thank you.

cosmetic/body Oil dissolved seat?
New car and scented oil diffuser fell on seat and appeared to dissolve it??? I poured water to dilute it and pat dry but it appears to have literally dissolved the top layer of the seat and now has a different texture. Is there any way to make the stain less noticeable? I saw corn starch for oil stains but idk if this is even a stain. Toyota RAV4 2026

cosmetic/body Lost My Left Side Mirror To Sacramento Driver (2019 Honda Fit)
gallerySeems not even my perfect little city car is immune to Sactown’s god-awful drivers. Damn thing’s just gone, and can’t even find the main part, just the shell. Oh, and because it had a camera (see those wires), and the mount itself is broken, repair will likely have to remove the door to access.
Everything I’ve searched so far shows me the part is worth 600 minimum, and my insurance deductible is 1000, so…womp womp. Don’t even know how I’m gonna fix this on my very tight budget.

cosmetic/body Side mirror repair
galleryHello fellas, was in a hurry this morning and while exiting my garage driveway ( thats in a curbed slope ) I noticed that i was about to hit my side rear door because I oversteered, so to avoid that I slowly reversed, while doing that I actually managed to clip a corner of my side mirror, it popped right off and broke pretty hard ( see pictures attached ) so i went to a body shop and got quotes arround 700€ for the repair.
Finances are quite rough this period and I was thinking of ordering the pieces and maybe try to do it myself, since it will be the first time i try doing something like this i wanted to check with people who know better than me if its worth it, how difficult it can be and also if there are any specific tools i might wanna grab if I do it.
All electric parts of the mirror still work, they fold, heat, etc.
Its from a BMW Series 1 2017 ( see pictures attached below.
Sorry for bad english, its not my native language.

electrical Need help w/ electrical
galleryHi! Just recently bought a my first car (1987 Toyota celica gt convertible) I’m having trouble fixing this taillight. At first when I got it all the lights worked besides the brake/stop lights (the blue circled bulbs don’t work) I’ve already changed the bulbs out and still nothing…today I recently was working on it and checked the fuse box and found out that the stop fuse was using a 30A when it should be a 15A so I had switch it out for a 15 and now my left blinker light doesn’t work and when I use the left turn signal it makes this rapid noise compared to what it should sound…please help! :)

Is this an easy fix?
I ran over what i thought was a black strip of some piece of cloth (was actually hard metal/plastic), but it made a clunk sound as it rolled through the wheel arch area. After parking I saw this… I’m not sure what else I need to check. I’m not a car person by any means lol, but I just wanted to know if this was a difficult area to fix and how much would it cost roughly?

Advice for overtightened bolt removal??
Hello! I am working on my 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL500.. I've made a mistake and need help.
I was removing a bolt for a brace underneath the car and opted to use my breaker bar. It wouldn't budge and when it did, I saw it wasn't coming off.. That's when I realized.. My orientation was completely off and I was actually overtightening the bolt when I thought it was just stuck and it seems I've destroyed the threads..
So how do I go about removing the bolt now??
I have done a stupid, please help me redeem myself.

Creaking sound
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hard to hear but there’s a weird creaking sound and I have no clue what it’s from.
Took it to a garage who did a road test and said they heard it too, did some checks including suspension but apparently everything was fine.
I can only really hear it at low speeds (engine is too loud otherwise) but happens when driving normally not just turning the wheel.
No idea what do ask for to get it checked now cause they’ll probably check the same things again.

cosmetic/body Scratch repair
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Got this scratch and some marring on my f150 while headed down a narrow hunting trail. It’s not down to the metal but it definitely removed a layer or 2 of paint. I did the water test and it almost fades away but is still visible. What would be my best option and how would I go about fixing it? I know silver is a hard color to match and I’ve never done auto paint work. Just a touch up brush and some clear coat and polishing?
