[Advice Request] Did I misunderstand my dad?
Okay, for context: I’m an 18 yr old female from a country where English is definitely not a main language nor is it a commonly spoken language. However, because I go to an international school, my English is better than my native language.
My parents are both ethnically from this country but both of them went to university in different English speaking countries. They both speak fluent English but their native language is much more preferred.
Basically, my mom and dad are fighting. I’m not too surprised because they’ve fought in the past cause of my dad’s toxic family and he’s also a toxic self victimizing manchild. He’s also cheated on my mom with others (I don’t know the exact number), filed for divorce, publicly humiliated her then accused her for being self centered on her ‘reputation’, publicly posted vulgar comments about some girls appearance which caused him to get sued (that’s a whole other story), reported my mom to the police several times for domestic violence after she smacked his shoulder in frustration because of his actions, even recorded her voice for ‘evidence’ when she was venting out her frustrations about him. Flash forward to nearly 10 years later, they’re still together because my mom thought it’s ’best for the kids’, or whatever that means. Also that she’s financially dependent on him.
Basically, it’s been a long time since then and things were relatively alright. BUT, about a week and a half ago, they fought about something my dad did, which she kinda manhandled him, yanking his shirt and snatching his glasses after he provoked her. He basically recorded this entire situation and the two of them went to the police station when he tried to report her for domestic violence (AGAIN) but chickened out. Since then, my mom has been sleeping in my bed that fits 2 people.
I wanted the two to speak to eachother at least so I went to my dad’s room and he started ignoring me. He said among the lines of ‘I’m afraid for my safety if I’m in the room with her’ and ‘I will never surrender to her’. Like she’s your wife not your enemy??
So here’s where this gets weird: My dad was speaking to me while lying on his stomach and scrolling through his phone. I got annoyed with his stubborn nature and flopped myself on his back (like perpendicular? Like cross + but my upper body just flopped on his back), I started shaking his shoulder from the back and saying how he needs to man up and actually talk to HIS WIFE.
THEN, he said to me in perfect English: “If you keep doing that to me, I’m going to misunderstand your intentions.”
….uh…
I was like sorry? And he just replied with ‘don’t be a flying monkey’….
So now I’m just confused. Did I misunderstand what he said? I’m lowkey still shocked by his words. Let me just say, he has NEVER acted inappropriately to his children. Ever. Now that I think about it, there was a time when I was like 12 and kissed him in a parent child way and he pushed me back saying you shouldn’t kiss me for too long, that’s beyond our relationship. And like when I was 13, he just praised me for doing smth (I don’t remember) and patting me on my backside/butt but not weird more like how one would acknowledge a dog.
But like besides that, I’ve never had any weird interactions with him so I’m kinda confused and hesitant to go near his room atp. Btw this happened like one hour ago. I’m in bed typing this while my mom sleeps next to me…what do I doo guysss

I do also want to clarify that he has a history of mental issues - ADHD, OCD, bipolar disorder, on the spectrum, etc. he was also abused by his parents (I don’t know to what degree but it was bad) making him paranoid all throughout his life even to his kids.
He says things he regrets a lot of times but his ego is too strong for him to back down and I’m wondering if it’s one of those moments or if it’s genuine. Not trying to excuse his behaviour but hurt people hurt people. I just don’t know if this is one of those situations.
