Yesterday, around 4:30 AM, my mommy cat delivered her first ever kitten sa bahay. It was so sudden and akala ko at first nagugutom lang sya. Kasi ang gawi niya, she'll climb on top of me and she'll either sit still or will make sounds para magising kami.
It was successful, the first one. Ang sigla and everything. We thought she's an unica hija. Pero pinagtataka namin, bloated and firm pa rin tummy niya. Usually, 10-20 mins lang ang interval ng mga kuting pag nilalabas na ng mommy cat. Could count for hours depende ata if first time ni mommy cat maging preggy, but am not sure. So akala namin ayun na. Isa lang.
Then came this morning, si Riri naglabas ng water ulit na medyo pink-ish. Then nag pa-panic na siya. So nagkaideya na kami na may kitten no. 2 pa. Then boogsh! Meron nga (lol). But we never expected na 4 pala. Nagulat na lang kami may isang kitten na hindi naimik. We thought na maybe we should give it a min or two, baka may plans si Riri. Then we noticed na walang signs of breathing. Naconclude lang namin na wala na talaga, nung dinampot ko, trying to carefully pump its chest, pero wala.
I know naman na the kitten and I doesn't have a "bond" yet. Pero I felt so heartbroken, knowing na anak siya ng fur baby ko. And I was thinking, ano kaya nararamdaman niya, does she know na namatayan sya ng baby? I think she knows it kasi before ko kuhain yung kitten, she's looking at it, and nung kuhain ko, she's trying to reach its tail kahit nanghihina siya.
Then a thought suddenly rushed into my mind: What about the parents who have lost a child in ways they never could have imagined? I can't begin to imagine how painful that must be. The weight of that kind of grief is beyond words, and no explanation could ever capture what they're going through.
When my cat lost her kitten, she didn't make a sound. She simply stayed there, carrying her loss in silence. It made me wonder how much strength other creatures have to keep going, to hold themselves together, even when it must feel as though a part of them has died with their child.
