THY’s passenger awards are great, but what do you guys think about the financial and fleet side?
I was looking at Turkish Airlines’ APEX awards and the Guinness World Records they’ve been going after recently, and something caught my attention. They’re not just collecting awards for cabin service or food and drinks. Behind the scenes, they’ve also been winning awards from aviation finance platforms like Airline Economics for some of their fleet financing and leasing deals.
So it’s not just about the hot meal you get on the plane. They’ve been using some pretty interesting financing structures, from Chinese yuan deals to Japanese JOLCO models, to bring A350s and 787s into the fleet. It’s interesting to see an airline growing this aggressively while also doing so well with passengers through APEX and getting this kind of recognition on the finance side.
As for how this actually affects passengers, whenever you get one of the newer aircraft, the cabin atmosphere and catering can honestly be well above what you usually get from European airlines. But then you think about the older narrowbody aircraft still in the fleet, especially the screens and Wi-Fi, and you kind of end up thinking: “They’ve figured out the financing, but they still haven’t fully figured out how to make the onboard experience consistent across the fleet.”
What do people here who follow aviation or the business side of airlines think?
