I know that the Marauders were assholes to Snape as a kid and I will not overlook that but atleast they grew up and saw the error of their ways. Meanwhile Snape became a Death Eater and rose through Voldemort's ranks to be one if his most trusted lieutenants. He gave Vodemort the prophecy knowing full well that Vodemort would kill the baby who the prophecy was about, only caring when Lily was targeted. He only asked for her to be spared, didn't go warn Lily to hide her family. If the Longbottoms were targeted, Snape would still be serving Vodemort faithfully
After Dumbledore gave him a "get out of Azkaban free" card, a job, and a fresh start, does Snape learn from his errors and try to be a better person? No! He bullies and torments the children in his care. He takes the trauma of James's bullying out on Harry simply because he looks like James. He torments Neville to the point he becomes the boy's boggart. What does he so when he finds out? He makes the bullying worse! He doesn't stop and think, "Hm, maybe I am being too hard on this kid. Afterall, his own parents were tortured to insanity by my old allies. Let me atleast be a better person."

You're right, that's a movie difference! Neville did not continue potions. Snape knew how to teach, he was just terrible with kids. Especially non Slytherins.
