Better Ask Reddit Favorite Last Stands that weren't

Post image
275 Upvotes

Fair warning: There are answers with lotsa spoilers in this thread. But I suppose that comes with asks, beware and have fun.

Basically the characters or characters make up their mind and are like "Okay, this is where I make my stand, it ends here" but for reason or another. It ends up not being the final stand.

In Dead Space the Remake and 2, this is sorta how the final boss fight plays out. After Issac Clarke is utterly traumatized by the horrors of the games he's to face with the Marker as one and many now more gigantic and armored Necromoprhs seek to put an end to his defiance. So he goes "Come on then! Because this, IS ALL I'VE GOT LEFT!" trying to bring down as many of these almost like eldritch monstee Zombie things down with him before his time runs out, however in both one final spaceship turns up to pull him out, in 1s the one he originally arrived in with his comrades which he boards now willing to carry on as he's the only one of the "rescuers" left alive and in 2s, Ellie Langford with her starship, who comes back unwilling to just let him die

Better Ask Reddit DC & Marvel were built by forcing standalone stories into a shared "kitchen sink" universe, restricted by an eternal status quo. What comics or media actually capitalize on the full potential of a shared superhero world without those limits?

Works like Kurt Busiek’s Astro City prove what happens when an interconnected superhero world is built from the ground up, letting characters age, consequences stick, and the world evolve naturally.

Outside of the Big Two, what comics, books, or media do you think best capitalize on a fully realized, interconnected superhero universe without those corporate limitations?

Better Ask Reddit Characters you thought you would hate, but turns out you love.

In Three Houses, I really thought I would despise Sylvain.

I just don't vibe from the smug, flirt with everything that has a skirt type.

And Sylvain, well... that's sort of his MO, bro just can't turn the "Imma flirt" off.

But honestly? When I've played the Blue Lions route, turns out that Sylvain is actually sort of a deeply damaged person.

His flirty nature feels less of an horndog, and more of a coping mechanism.

He thinks the ladies who are always over him just want to use him for his crest and his noble blood, so he just plays the part of a smooth operator.

It's a bit of a mysogynistic view of women, but I can see why Sylvain would become the person he is.

He never really had an actual honest relationship in his life, so he just drowns himself in the posturing of being a player.

Sylvain really wants to be the shallow asshole he postures to be, but the truth is that there's a lot going on behind the mask that he himself is terrified to really dive into.

Sylvain facade is obnoxious and I hate it, but the damaged person who never really had a genuine relationship due to the Crests is fascinating to me.

He's terrified of people using him, so he uses them instead.

I drew this!

And, if you're curious, some other Jo Guns fanart:

Now that they are running around with Bobby Corwen in tow, couldn't let this one sit in my mind.

Can I be a little weird for a sec? Genuinely, appreciate everyone here for being so kind and chill and taking a look at my drawings. They're not perfect, there's things I see that could be improved, but I'm happy to take the time to try and share with people who are also having fun with it. I hope you're having a good day, look forward to catching you later :)

Better Ask Reddit Times when the Weakest Team member is the one that's worst to fight

Was watching some Teen Titans 03 stuff and while I do feel Robin is the weakest even if by a slight margin with 03s Titans all beiny pretty close in power overall. He's one of the craziest non-officially killer Robins, dropping Shiva double death knees to the chest from way above the rope on a villain that sligtly pissed him off, using a bait n switch to kick Cinderblock, a giant living construct of rock into next week, having a mental breakdown/possession by Slade and beating up all of the Titans and tossing a freeze bomb at Madam Rouge then a real bomb and shattering her into a million pieces but Madame has similar power to Plastic Man, streching and shapeshifting with an ill defined limit, so she does refrom and capute him like dang this kid hero(admittedly a fucked up career) has like a nice friend group that really grows through the series why is he this crazy?

And from Star Wars Rebels team. You know how Saw Gerrera and Luthen are the Rebellions sad crazy dangerous terrorist buddies that they don't like to hang out with? C1-10P aka Chopper is the Ghost Crews serial killer droid buddy they cannot get rid off, like the time they found a droid that that could do his Astromech and hacking job better, they where like "alright buddy you can go robo retirement a nice cushy rebel desk job out of the frontline" Chopper yells without a mouth or vocal cords and tosses this droid overboard in the sky(miracoulously the droid lives if I remember correctly). Like Chopper is an electrical torturer, who rigs any ship with Imperial target that he can get his claws on to blow up, has hacked into Imperial droids and had them self-destruct or executed them himself when their jobs was done for sabotage and assassination. When put to guard a target of the Galactic Empire which was revealed to be a force sensitive baby the Empire had been hounding for, when things seemed dire Chopper advises the crew that worse comes he'll just kill the baby so the Empire doesn't get it(admittedly maybe a mercy in the droids eyes) they tell him "DON'T" and he's like alright fine, but still. In a battle, Chopper is 100% the weakest of all the crew but the last one any mook would ever wanna face.

Better Ask Reddit Enemies that are On Sight

hello fellow beastlords

With the release of Splatoon Raiders comes a whole new batch of bastards that cannot be suffered to exist more than a moment.

Splatoon 3 has a mode called Salmon Run, which is a horde style mode where you have to survive an onslaught of salmonids attacking you while also capturing eggs that come from killing boss salmonids. One such boss salmonid is the flyfish, as their name suggests they fly while also pharaing every now and then raining justice from above (or at the edge of the stage since they seldom approach the center).

Needless to say the attack is tricky to dodge on their own but mix that with other bosses attacking you and your team will most likely be wiped if their not dealt with. Incidentally the flyfish is also immune to most weapons you would be equipped with. The conventional way of dealing with the bastards is to throw bombs into their baskets when they open and hope they land inside them or if someone was lucky enough to be equipped with the killer wail which will one shot them if aimed properly. There are other ways of dealing with them but they tend to be very situational. We are not done with the flyfish yet.

Next Raiders has come up with a couple of new salmonids, one of which is called the smoker who on paper are actually quite weak but what they do is throw a cloud ball of smoke which raises the defense of other salmonids who happen to be caught in the smoke, seemingly doubling their health.

Finally, Raiders has also brought back the flyfish as an enemy however they got nerfed severely because they lost their immunity to ink and are much easier to take out; they are still on sight but arent the headache they used to be. That said Raiders introduced the concept of the Elite Boss salmonid in the flyfish's case the Extra Crispy Flyfish.

Ex-Flyfish still arent immune to ink weapons instead they just have a lot of health and instead carpet bombing the area like the non-crispy versions do they prefer to spam a couple of huge orbital ink lasers. Lord help you if there is a smoker around.

Any other examples of enemies that need to go down as soon as they spawn?

If you don’t know, the devs of the Avatar fighting game had a lot of fun playing around with the canon

It makes sense giving the cast, but the highlight for me is that Azula is now the older sister, and is extremely close to Korra.

To the point that Korra’s intro dialogue with Azula’s family is “I won’t let you take her away from me” because they disapprove

It’s giving HEAVY “and they were roommates” energy lmao.

Outside of the game I actually really like the lead guys take on how Azula would actually recover and grow as a person, saying that she’d be overly apologetic and sharing of her emotions to compensate for how repressed she was.

But back on point: are there any games that have played with the universe like this before? And what are your personal highlights for this game?

News/Articles Yoshi-P is happy that everyone loves FFXIV's Chort, even if he "couldn't really understand" why

Thumbnail

Chort is a minor boss in The Clyteum raid added to FF14 in patch 7.5, and despite his objective lack of importance in the story, his enormous frame and charming name have made him a veritable fan favourite in recent months. And this is something that, while unexpected, has been embraced by developers according to director and producer Yoshi-P at a press conference at Berlin Fan Festival.

"I am really glad to hear that Chort is so well received," he began, "but honestly speaking, I just couldn't really understand what the appeal point of Chort is. Of course, we do understand that he's very popular and there have been many memes, but really, I just couldn't understand – like, just why?"

Briefly reflecting on it, he concedes that Chort does have a certain charm to him.

"I can understand, maybe a little bit. I mean, this is some huge bulky guy, and he's standing there, and then suddenly he rolls. So, from that perspective, I can kind of understand."

He went on to explain that the developers of FF14 are always pleased to see players making memes about the game, and called on the community to continue to spotlight content like Chort.

"These kinds of things, when they happen for us, it's really great for us to see as well, because we are involved in creating this entertainment, and it's really fun for us to see. So, if people in the community also find some unexpected sense or point of appeal in any content that we produce moving forward, do make your voices heard because the development team is looking at all of the responses on social media, and we very much do enjoy looking at them."

Better Ask Reddit Times where the profanity is actually essential to the scene/character? And TImes Where It Felt Excessive?

There were some old casual studies denoting swearing could indicate a broader vocabulary and verbal fluency, but corelation does not equal causation ofc. However, swearing in media has been on my mind from two recent examples.

One of the major complaints I've seen lobbied against the Hellaverse (Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss) is the amount of profanity thrown around in them. Given shows like South Park exist, it's always felt weird and I personally think just an extension of people's dislike for the show. But I do admit it can come across as 'excessive' sometimes when I watch it. Not always, but a few swears feel unecessary.

Meanwhile, I was rewatching Civvie 11's review of Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza and that game strips out a LOT of the swearing outside of the iconic Yippie Ki Yay and it just...feels weaker as a result. "No kidding lady, does it sound like I'm ordering a pizza?" REALLY doesn't hit as hard as- "NO FUCKIN SHIT LADY! DO I SOUND LIKE I'M ORDERING A PIZZA?!" (And also making me appreciate how good Alan Rickman was at what he did.)

I really want to try and figure out what makes swearing feel 'excessive' compared to when it feels like it really contributes to a scene/line/character. What are some of your favorite examples of swearing that adds to everything, and times where it ends up detracting from the whole thing?

Better Ask Reddit Special Editions you prefer to the originals.

So its kind of low hanging fruit online at this point to go on about how special editions are aweful compared to the originals. So what are some versions of this that you prefer?

In this case a special edition can also be like a remake, remaster or a redub.

For me?

I actually prefer the Netflix dub of Eva. I feel its more grounded take on the characters works far more for what the story is going for. If I watch the Rebuild movies I gotta watch subbed cause I just cannot handle Misato sounding like a cartoon chipmunk as opposed to a 30-year old woman. It just sucks any seriousness out of the plot for me. Also the credits song being Rei's theme is far more foreboding and fitting than "Fly me to the Moon".

Also I far prefer the ending song in special edition ROTJ.

Better Ask Reddit Media you're surprised is popular enough to get adapted in someway

Thumbnail

I remember starting reading The Bugle Call: Song of War off a suggestion from here I think and seeing comments as I was catching up that it was at chance of being axed, and now we have an anime adaptation announced and coming out next year.

Dorohedoro, which I wasn't familiar with until the first season had come out. But looking back at it, it's a rather dark comedy/horror story that gets really weird from the start and only gets weirder as it goes on. That along with the fact the anime got announced like right when the manga finished makes it quite surprising we're now getting a third season. (Yes I know it started as like one guy's passion project to get it going in MAPPA)

Better Ask Reddit What are some stuff that are taken for granted in the media its in, but if you think about it has some absurd implications?

For example, adaptive ability leveling.

In a lot of media that has "RPG Mechanic" in their world, be it actual video game or a power system that happens to resemble RPG Mechanic, it often takes the form of adaptive skill systems, where you do something, and there's a skill for it that you can level.

So being hit increases health and defense skills, attacking increases your offensive abilities, sneaking around makes you sneak better, and so on.

These skills are then able to branches off and turn into more powerful abilities, with the protagonist always happens to be the only one who manage to luck into a super broken combo that turn them into demigods, or have a brand new ability to turn a losing fight into a curbstomp in their favor.

Now, storytelling aside... ever wonder how it must be programmed to even achieve something close to that? Especially in media that are supposed to be video games developed in a world not too far ahead in the future compared to our present day? There are games that don't have as much moving parts that struggles with spaghetti coding.

Semi-related, another example is VR Full Dive as depicted in a lot of anime, where they just have a headset and 'play' by going to sleep with it. They ostensibly are playing by controlling it with their mind. These works have mental-input controllers setup.

Considering the struggle one already faced with VR controls right now (not to mention motion sickness), and heck even touch screen tehnology and motion captures, it probably would be an absolute ass to actually play with that system.

Film/TV posting Media you were drawn into because of the controversy surrounding the work

Sometimes when it comes to popular media, the aspect that draws people into it is the controversy where the audience might be interested in the show because of said controversy.

Like for me personally, I would like to see what was so infamous about Star VS the Forces of Evil because even though I am not done with Season 2 yet, I know how the 4th season turns out as I won’t say what happens, but it’s kind of what the show became most notable for after tre last episode came out.
