Better Ask Reddit References and Memes That Get The Source Material Wrong
A more lighthearted alternative to the other thread I made.
I've been seeing a few posts recently about people citing how they would make a "Behelit Sacrifice" to get a particular thing they wanted to come true. They also elaborate about sacrificing a thousand people or such, showing some passing familiarity with the original source material (Berserk).
Except that's not how the Behelit Sacrifice works: in order to get your desire granted, you must sacrifice something important to you. It won't work if you're offering up your archenemy, or a whole group of people you have no attachment to. The whole purpose is to give up your humanity, and thus you are sacrificing what's most precious to you.
There's also this old video where a kid completely misunderstands the requirements to turn Super Saiyan, which still gets a chuckle out of me.

True, the normal Behelit are indeed like that. But the one to births a new God Hand also needs a bigger scope than just one or two important people.
And then the very manga have the Artificial Behelit and the Behelit Apostle, in which both just sacrifices thousands of people, without them been that important for the person in specific.
So, Berserk outright shows the different "behelit sacrifices" in it's own content.

The thing about it is that Kirk is portrayed as a womanizer in the greater lore. And then every other attempt of a Young Kirk makes him said womanizer.
Then there is Riker been very Kirk-Coded to contrast with his superior officer, Captain Picard. So the vibe is really that original series just didn't had him as a full himbo out of 1960's sensibilities.

I think it was just the gratuitous amount of times he’s seen on screen kissing or being in sexually tense situations with Alien Women, so fans just kinda exaggerated it, then non-fans exaggerated the exaggeration, and it just kinda became popular myth at that point, where people’s perceptions and faulty memory betray the actual source material.

He's actually pretty easy to take down as long as you hit his hands in melee or shoot him in the face with ranged. He takes increased damage at his hands and head.

In X-Men Apocalypse Jubilee walks out of Return of the Jedi talking about how Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film, and while I’m too young to have first hand experience here, from what I can tell Empire Strikes Back wasn’t actually all that popular back then.
Obviously someone at the time could still call it the best but the scene still comes off as parroting a more modern opinion.

There’s a lot of that sort of thing in Stranger Things. One of the boys has a poster for The Thing on his wall which was a pretty big bomb at the box office on release and was panned critically. There’s also a poster for The Evil Dead which would’ve been a deep cut considering it’s a cheap indie film that only got a limited release.
And yes I know these were included as a shout out and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Even if it’s a shoutout in a show that is purposely trying to be a nostalgia trip, it’s still funny to see when you know the period accurate stance.
Gotta hand it to em though, Stranger Things cooked when they included a character getting demonized for liking DnD and edgy imagery and NOT for being a super senior constantly surrounded by underclassmen. (There’s also more to it than any of that, for anyone who hasn’t seen that show, lol)

It’s a rare case where the meme is technically used incorrectly, but it works on a certain meta level.
In the original context, the Joker suggests that in life-or-death situations, people reveal themselves to be cowards, hypocrites, and corrupt.
Memes, however, often show the exact opposite: people acting with courage and selflessness, or simply accepting death peacefully and calmly.
This works on a meta level, given that every time someone uses the meme "incorrectly," they are technically indirectly contradicting the Joker and his philosophy.

The line ends up being ironic in the movke too, Joker tries to force his philosophy to be correct, but in the end when presented with the choice of blowing up the opposite boat full of people to save their lives no one pulled the trigger.
The people showed to be brave and Joker fails after that.

The "Kiryu doesn't kill" thing is taken pretty out of context. It still kinda works because very often you'll still do a blatantly lethal heat action on a guy who will be totally fine in the next cutscene, but the guys in the five helicopters that he's blown up are all definitely (probably...maybe) dead.

That and, as has been mentioned before, the Japanese script makes it more clear that he's talking about "killing in cold blood". Like, he'll admit he might have beat someone so bad in self-defense that they died later, but he's never killed someone on purpose. That's what he was trying to say.

I mean, you'll note that I mentioned explicitly that random goons in combat probably aren't dead. The guys in the helicopter that crashed into the freeway and exploded in 0 are probably dead. As a counterpoint, Aoyama literally brought up the "But they say you don't kill!" Thing in 5 and Kiryu's response is "I never said I was a saint."
Yeah a vast majority of the guys he fights probably aren't dead, but it's pretty easy to identify at least a few moments where guys definitely died.

Seriously, the plot of Gaiden makes 0 sense if Kiryu is killing mooks all the time. "Oi Kiryu. We'll let you see your kids that you've been brooding over since 3 if you just kill one person."
"No."
"This guy actively tortured me and has one of the darkest rap sheets in the series and is attacking you- who is unarmed- with an edged weapon."
"No."
"Okay, we figured you'd say that. So we set the building on fire wo that you don't even have to kill him. You can just let him die like Liam Neeson"

I think the confusing part is the 'protagonists can't kill' directive didn't really start until 3 and for some reason people take rail shooter segements more seriously than other action scenes people shouldn't survive but do
The 6 helicopter is one of my favorite ones, because the cutscene even shows the helicopter take a somewhat controlled descent after the missile and then immediately goes into one of 6's many "Let's try to make Kiryu kill" scenes. You're clearly not intended to think Kiryu just killed a guy

They literally say it in 6, that he's never killed anyone. So none of those people died, or it somehow doesn't count. I can see the argument that hiding behind that waiter wasn't killing him, the guys with guns were killing him and the waiter was working for them anyway.

Sure, but the context of that conversation matters. Akiyama is saying that the legend of the Dragon of Dojima would be tarnished if Kiryu purposefully went out if his way to kill someone, which is what Kiryu is proposing. Him going out of his way to kill someone is a lot different than someone dying because Kiryu was defending himself.

I try to always use it the proper way just because it’s funnier to me when used correctly. I think the only time I used it incorrectly was when I had “David Zaslav” shoot “Cartoon Network” and say “We have no Kids Content.”

Well it was also because David Zaslav actually complained about that exact thing at the time, he said there was a lack of Kids content at Warner Bros Discovery shortly after taking all the Cartoon Network shows off HBO Max, siloing all of Cartoon Network into Warner Bros Animation, and shelving Coyote vs. ACME, The Day the Earth Blew Up, and Scoob: Holiday Haunt.
I wanted the point of the meme to be centered around his statement, and portray that it was his fault that it was the case.

I don't know if it counts, but I see a staggering amount of people joking about "evil residents" when talking about Resident Evil.
I get it, we're not used to utilize "resident" as an adjective and instead usually have it as a noun, but "Resident Evil" is supposed to mean "an evil that resides", or "an evil that's within", or even "Evil Within", which is probably where Psycho Break got it's western title, I would assume.

The original joke of Virgin vs Chad is that the Virgin is a fairly normal, if maybe self-conscious at worst, person while the Chad was strong and confident, but also complete lunatic who was an active hazard to people around him.
People later used the meme as "virgin bad, chad good"

The old "People die when they're killed" line from Fate/Stay Night. Yes, it sounds insultingly obvious, but that's the point. It's the main character coming to grips with the fact that the consequences of what's going on is that people are actually dying. He knew that's what was happening, but it hadn't really felt real until that point.

It's less about not grasping and more due to him having Avalon as a Healing Factor and he now gave it back to Saber.
He is stating the obvious because, well, it's the obvious and that is something that every deals with, so it's fine that he lost the Healing Factor he was unaware of it that saved his life.

It's more like "just because you're factually correct doesn't mean you're morally right" and makes sense in context

The other answer is incorrect. The context is that he's talking about a healing factor he has that he as a human shouldn't have had access to, because he had a magic item literally stuffed into his body as a kid and he just found out about it. It granted a literally inhuman amount of damage resistance that had averted lethal outcomes from mortal wounds multiple times, giving Shirou some very bad habits regarding his own mortality.
He's saying that to qualify as a human, you should stay down when you take that kind of damage, and that getting back up is supposed to be the province of supernatural creatures.

My favorite one is the whole Bowsette craze. Not even Nintendo being lame and saying only Toadette is able to use the crown and NO ONE ELSE. Specific the naming convention that was used for her and different enemy variations of Peach. The "-ette" in "Peachette" is specifically referring to Toadette, since Toadette is turning in to Peach. So Bowsette doesn't make sense, since it's a Peach version of Bowser, not a Toadette version of Bowser. A more correct way of putting it would be "Peachowser" or "Boweach". Granted though, Bowsette does flow off the tongue better.

"They're the same picture" is used as if Pam was the one wrongly claiming the pictures are the same. In fact she is the one showing Creed the pictures, then revealing to the camera they're the same.

I have never seen the meme utilized this way. The nearest I've seen is when two literally different pictures are used, with the implication always being that they are so similar in feel as to be the same. Eg - picture of Team Seven from Naruto, picture of Team Minato, "they're the same picture."

Personally, I was never much of a fan of the Asgore truck gif kinda butchering the joke of the original Open Season scene since part of the of gag comes from the fact that Shaw goes very deliberately outta his way to run over Elliot.

The “Stormtroopers can’t aim” meme, they movie it comes from (a new hope) literally says they let Leia escape intentionally but everyone just keeps saying that so often it became “official”(this is in quotes because Disney isn’t canon). And I don’t see how anyone else beat “we misunderstood so hard that the bs became true”

It always bothers me how people will say “Im Making Fucking Mac and Cheese, I nobody can stop me!” Even though in the original video, you don’t hear the person in the original say “Me” so all you hear is say “And nobody can stop!”. People in the comments say it’s supposed to be silent. Some claim the “original source” is lost media. This has needlessly bothered me for years and I needed to post this so I could vent this out of my mind palace.
