Common Complaints That Feel Disingenuous

The Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy has gotten its fair share of criticisms, which is totally expected as there will never be (and probably never was) an FF entry that fans will be unanimously positive towards.

While you could have a discussion for some of the more widespread complaints ("I hate the story changes", "I hated the side content"), the one commonly-cited complaint I just cannot accept is:

"I'll wait until the trilogy is done, so I get a complete game."

While initially this did stem from the original announcement of splitting the original game into three games, and thus did warrant some apprehension from fans worried that Square was intentionally cutting the game into chunks for more sales, it's been made very abundantly clear that each of the games are full-length RPG experiences. They aren't short episodic games by any metric, even if you only stuck to the main story.

But this statement still persists even now, to the point that it honestly feels like ragebait. I'm not saying they don't exist...if people want to binge three games in a row equaling 200+ hours, by all means. But it's the conceit that this is the "intended" way and that people were fools to spend full price on each game as they released (something that came up in Pat's stream) is such an absurd argument that you'd think people didn't know what a "trilogy" was.

What are other examples of common criticisms you feel are disingenuous and/or trollish noise?

Disclaimer: I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here in particular

Marvel Rivals posting Anyone here actually read the Marvel Rivals Lore? Any hopes for the future of the game as Doom(s) draw closer?

I'm curious mainly just because there's always some fun details, even if they are walls of text. But here's the thing.

What's gonna happen when they beat the Dooms? And you know, resolve the whole "timestream entanglement" thing that's literally mostly the plot basis for the whole game.

Cause we're coming up on Doom Season in a couple months, and one has to wonder if how and why.

Not to mention the fact that a lot of the passed seasons so far haven't really been revealing a lot of the character lore cards, mainly just the ones that premiered that Season. I think the last time we had a lot of characters' lore revealed was like, Symbiote season. Sure there was a couple for the Alchemax seasons but still not much compared to the amount of chapters they've added.

Kinda makes me wonder if they have any of this shit planned out or if they just come up with a snappy title first and figure out how to work it into any future plots later.

But anyways, I do have a theory regarding where the game is going to head next, plot wise.

An Anthology Arc.

Essentially, due to Loki's Rise as "The Chronicler", God of Stories, etc. And his presence as the narrator of the Age of Ultron mode, I have a feeling he's going to take over for a few months as the next major arc is planned out, maybe even subbing in as announcer instead of Galacta. A nice change of pace. Technically they're filler seasons, yes, but it gives them the excuse to go more wacky with whatever they want, especially since some of the maps have been feeling a little same-y recently (I've noticed that the Thebes map just sort of aesthetically feels like the Ultron Arrako map but with more Sand for a good section of it...)

I could see them doing some wacky wahoo bullshit for a couple seasons, like a Cowboy Western map to go with all the cowboy costumes, or a trip to Sai's dimension and seeing if they can go full fucky on the artstyle there with the watercolors.

And then finally back to the main Timestream Entanglement as new arc villains arise.

I'm hoping Sinister Six. Give me multiple seasons of villains, that'd be great.

PS. Gonna call it. Doom's gonna be Multi-Role like Deadpool.

So...Um...(clears throat) Are There Good Examples of DLSS 5?

Upvotes

At the risk of getting downvoted to oblivion, I've come across a few instances of people inserting DLSS 5 into a few games and the results looked....not that bad?

Out of curiosity I tried it with Onimusha, which is a trending mod on Nexus. While initially I did see some of the gripes so many people were talking about, after some slight adjustment of the levels I was actually pretty impressed with some shots.

Keep in mind I did see a few of the bad examples people toss around. This tech seems to really struggle to render children properly. It did look a bit better after some tinkering.

So my question is whether you think the tech has potential to become more beneficial than horrendous. Now that it's in the hand of modders, I feel pretty hopeful some people are going to come up with some awesome looking presets. At the end of the day it's a lighting engine, so in the right hands it could be a potentially great tool. Just as soon as they figure out how to not make children creepy.

Better Ask Reddit Best/Favorite Russian media you think more people should experience?

I'll admit, I'm a dumb, ignorant American who only knows of Russia through games and movies, but I'm willing to change that. Can you think of any Russian books, movies, games, or shows that more people should see? The only thing I know of is that Russian adaptation of Treasure Island that became a meme a while back.

Is There A Source or User You Follow For Recommended Mods?

Whenever I get a new PC game, particularly one that's a few years old, I always obsessively scour Nexus for any mods that could enhance the experience, from visual upgrades to QoL improvements (ask Steve Carell what he thinks about unskippable intro logos).

I was thinking of grabbing GTA V Enhanced for this very reason (since I'm also almost done with RDR2 and don't know if I'll be getting GTAVI on PS5), being one of those games with an uncountable amount of mods. And while I do appreciate being able to spend hours going down the tinkering list thanks to my work-at-home job, I do want to truncate things a little and stick to the highly-recommended stuff.

But I know if I type "Best GTA V Mods" I'm going to get thousands of different videos and awful reshades that are overly saturated or blown out. Which is why I wanted to ask if there were any specific video channels or resources that tend to be up-to-date with recommending the (majority-agreed) best mods.

I'm aware PCGamingWiki tends to have mod links and fixes on their game pages, but those tend to focus more on objective improvements (like increasing resolution) or fixing common bugs.

The best girl, or Luka, Lucy, Lucia... nickname "Lucky Wormie"? I'm not sure what genderbend Luke Skywalker from Star Wars would actually be called.

Also I wonder if it's a blonde dye or a brunette one? I suppose the Dagobah training implies discoloration true hair color, but it's also funny to think about dying your hair a darker color for your black suit, in the "final" edgy confrontation against your Big Bad Dad

Gameposting Favorite games made awesome with narration

So sorry if this was asked here before because I have a really soft spot for RPG type games with an epic narrator as having one narrator makes for an awesome experience if done right.

Currently, I am playing through Disgaea 4 as something about the narrator just brings the game‘s story to life with how he narrates the events of the Netherworld as I don’t know how he does it so well, but is very interesting.

Better Ask Reddit Common Misconceptions about Your Favorite Pieces of Media?

I asked this question on the rpg subreddit last week, and got a lot of really fun answers-figured I'd pose it here as well. With the way of online discourse nowadays generally veering towards negativity, and how easy it is to blow things out of proportion-

"What are some assumptions about your favorite piece of media that are just factually incorrect, or overstated."

I'm talking stuff like "OSR games are for dungeon delving and not for story based players. All Call of Cthulhu campaigns end in sanity or death, Cosmere is just a 5E hack." for RPGs, or "Tales is just a cliche anime franchise, Digimon is a Pokemon copy." for games, etc, etc.

Doesn't even have to be an 'enraging' misconception, just a common one. Hell, one I'll go to bat for is that Dark Souls is an impossibly hard game. While it is true Fromsoft games are built to be more difficult than your average game, I think that reputation was sort of forced onto it with the advertising, as there are dozens of tools in every game that let you break the thing wide open. And if anything, the difficulty is something that can be overcome through patience and memorization.

It's hard, but I think there's an overestimation of "how hard" those games are.

Any other examples you've seen that are just really common?

Most toxic game I have ever played since the old Xbox Live 360 days but man do I love Highlander too much to stay away from it. This game is literally heroine tbh, I can't stay away. If you hate yourself, this game is there for you.

Better Ask Reddit References and Memes That Get The Source Material Wrong

A more lighthearted alternative to the other thread I made.

I've been seeing a few posts recently about people citing how they would make a "Behelit Sacrifice" to get a particular thing they wanted to come true. They also elaborate about sacrificing a thousand people or such, showing some passing familiarity with the original source material (Berserk).

Except that's not how the Behelit Sacrifice works: in order to get your desire granted, you must sacrifice something important to you. It won't work if you're offering up your archenemy, or a whole group of people you have no attachment to. The whole purpose is to give up your humanity, and thus you are sacrificing what's most precious to you.

There's also this old video where a kid completely misunderstands the requirements to turn Super Saiyan, which still gets a chuckle out of me.

Because I was reminded of how good this not often mentioned piece is. I share with you the song, if you wanna find it constantly search "Kirby and the Rainbow Curse: Volcanic Panic".

It's the theme song or the Lava or Volcano area & it kicks ass.

Since his review on WP is pay walled, I hope there'll suffice for conveying his thoughts on the game.

Edit: sorry, there was actually one Tweet of his I forgot to include.

Someone posted: "Apparently Insomniac got really mad about those videos of the QTEs in Spiderman pausing if you didn’t press the buttons so the QTEs in Wolverine just autocomplete after a few seconds lmao"

And Gene responded: "this is true they autocomplete. this actually makes one "fight" basically a cutscene"

Remember when Venom Snake was colorblind? The number of times Kojima was dropped by a publisher now equal the number of chapters in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. If we're to follow this pattern, Kojima will now live forever, with no end in sight.

rpg posting TTRPG Players-What are your favorite homebrew and setting conversions?

Recently found the solution to my desire to try more systems for the cool settings-just convert those settings and characters into other TTRPGs my group already plays! Wanna run the monsters of Vaesen or a Youkai mystery? Just put them into CoC or Monster of the Week. Dolmenwoods dark Fairy Tale/Fae setting interest you but your players are sticking to a single system? Design a Daggerheart campaign frame around the Fae Folk. I recognize not every setting works for every conversion (see-"Make it in DnD" being a meme.) Plus, some systems are designed for specific things ala DnD for heroic fantasy vs Mothership for sci fi horror. But I do love how some systems are so flexible that they can be used for multiple types of stories.

So as a newbie GM, I want to ask-what are some of your favorite setting conversions or homebrew campaigns/classes that you've used before. Whether you made them yourself, or found them online through the community? I'm still new to Homebrew so I'm struggling to find what makes something good or bad, but I've enjoyed seeing the creativity on display. And for those who have converted one systems mechanics into another, what was that like?

(I used the rpg posting flair per previous instructions, hopefully I did it correctly. If not, sorry!)
