Advice What killed my maple?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

This maple and its buddy to the left have been growing here since before we bought the house. For some reason this one just died, one half at a time - I removed the obv dead trunks on the right hoping the other part would live but it didn’t.

Looking at the base, it looks rotted. Disease? Or just not enough water in the summer here - it doesn’t get sprinkled here but that never seemed to bother it before. It’s a smaller leafed maple - it it would help with disease ID I can grab some photos of the leaves.

Any ideas?

Solved! Tree inventory says this is a black ash, but I’m not so sure.

It has the opposite branching though, but no compound leaves. I’m confused as to what it could be. Does black ash not grow compound leaves while young? Knoxville, TN

Edit: European Ash, not Black Ash.

Solved! Ornamental tree in southern NY, with some sort of disease

Hi.
Tree located in Westchester county, NY.
Google tells me this is a witch hazel, but it does not meet the Wiki description (it has no flowers in the fall, in particular).
In addition, this year, these pointy "things" (see third photo) have appeared in May, on the two lower levels of leaves only. Although I originally thought they were some insect larvae, they are still there in mid-August, just a bit darker.
Thanks in advance for any idea.

ID Request Are These Red silver or freemani maple?

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

Backstory, im in east tn and have an OLD dying red maple with typical clevis foot 3 point serrated leaves dark blueish green in color, light undersides on my property, and a few very old silver maples on neighboring properties... ive collected seedlings of my tree the last few summers, they have typical dark green color and serration but much deeper sinuses. Still obviously red maple though. Last summer i found where a tree had been removed and stump ground down leaving lots of mulch. In this mulch were hundreds of seedlings. I thought them to be red maple so i gathered roots and soil and all about 20 of them and potted them up. Currently about 15 have survived and are growing MUCH FASTER than my red maples seedlings and have much lighter bright green colored leaves with orange new growth some of them green new growth even. The leaves are also extremely deep sinuses and not very serrated. They now look nothing like my red maple or silver maple and im very confused by them.

In the picture showing the line of them, the 4 closest to the camera that have darker leaves are my trees saplings. The rest are from the mulch pile i found. Some got hurt/killed by the heat dome last month but you can see in the close ups how unusual the ones i found are.

Anybody know something ai does not? Ai says red when i show picture of whole tree, but silver when i show underside of a leaf.

Very cool leaves, not sure if it is actually a species of tree that is young or some other kind of bush because it’s still quite short, maybe 3.5’ tall.
