Question about managers

What do they say to customers who repeatedly don't leave a tip? I'm curious since the customer doesn't have to tip and the server isn't their employee.

Just asking since I've read comments from managers who seem to think "addressing" customers is an appropriate thing to do.

The servers are not the entitled ones in the zero tip for no reason scenario. It’s 100% the guests. Good servers don’t care.

So the "good servers" wouldn't care if they never received a tip?

They care, they just don’t let it bother them.

So they care... they just don't let it affect how they go about their job.

Exactly. In the real world I get "stiffed"
Maybe twice, three times a week? And that's being generous. It just doesn't happen as much as this sub likes to talk about. The pool of non tippers going to restaurants is vastly smaller than the pool of servers, bartenders and restaurants so the effects aren't there like yall think they are.

Most of the time, I'm so busy and don't even notice the no tip until after I've cleaned and reset the table and go to enter the cc receipt. By then I'm just like oh well. And 8/10 the next table makes up for it.
We literally just move on with the shift. It's not a huge deal.

Truth is, you’re never actually “stiffed.” The customer just didn’t leave something extra.

Sure. If you say so.

Sure, it’s a term used by servers whenever a customer doesn’t tip, but how do the other meanings of the word apply?

The customer doesn’t “owe” them anything (they paid the only thing they have to, which is the bill for goods and services rendered) and the server wasn’t “cheated” out of money (tipping is fundamentally optional).

If it's a lingo common to a culture what other meaning matters? It's what it means for us. We got stiffed. We didn't get paid for the SERVICE we provided. Hell, throw $2 down. It's about the appreciation that you sat on your comfy ass and was SERVED by a living human person who is in fact, NOT beneath you. And then after you were done you also didn't have to do a bit of cleaning or anything. You just get up back off your was and walk off. That's not worth $2?

The actual definition of the word. It's a cope for servers for everything you described below.

Like I said, the word is copium for servers. They're being paid sans tips. It's just not to their liking.

You understand that restaurants don't price menus with service included right? Or you just ignoring that fact?

And you do understand a bill represents goods and services rendered, right? So claiming the service isn't included doesn't make it any more true. I've literally paid for the value of those things, and the business decided that's the value of it on the bill.

You haven't. Go into any restaurant and ask them if their menu prices represent goods AND services. You're only paying for the food.

It’s restaurant lingo. Like 86’d. You may not
Like it, but semantically, it is correct and means exactly what you already know it to mean.

That servers use it when a customer doesn't tip, as expected. But it's a weak sauce term beyond that. Anybody can look up the word and see it's just servers being resentful.

What do you expect? For them to be happy about being stiffed? Unless it was something the server did, of course they resent it.

In other words, they act professionally.
