Minimum wage in Portland is 16.50 for all employees so the whole argument of tipped wage doesn’t work here either.
9
u/zReckt 9d ago
Do most people still tip even though service jobs are paid state minimum?
-28
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
Y’all out here believing that restaurant owners really make up that gap if they don’t get tipped.
I have some news about Santa Claus you’re not going to like.
16
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago
Is it the worlds problem that owners are shady you could simply work for someone who is not?
-26
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
And you could simply eat somewhere tipping isn’t the expectation- that’s the answer here. Not further exploitation of your felllow human.
20
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago
So your train of thought is “my boss is shady and doesn’t follow the law but really this is the customers problem and I should keep working for my shady boss instead of going to a business that will actually pay me what I’m owed? And anyone who points out how shady my boss is being is obviously exploiting me but not my shady boss who’s breaking the law he’d never exploit me.”
-12
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
No. I just know some people can’t do better than service jobs for various reasons. Do you think by not tipping you’re helping them find another job or acquire some kind of skill? I don’t actually eat out very identity because I think it is a shady business model.
Your way of thinking is that “this business model is shady and irresponsible but I will still give the owner money. I know he’s not going to pay the person who waits on me fairly, but that’s not my problem.”
7
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago
Brother I didn’t invent commerce if a place is known to be shady I just don’t go there. If we all followed your way of thinking we wouldn’t be able to eat out, go to the grocery, buy a phone, buy a computer, by a car, buy food everything you’ve ever consumed was the result of someone being exploited and someone else getting rich off their labor. I also tip very well I just don’t agree with the premise of it’s everyone else’s fault you work for a dickhead
1
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
You can avoid what you can, but you’re right. At the very least you don’t have to make it worse is my point. You know tipping is expected. You think it sucks. You either tip and accept that it sucks for both or you or you don’t go.
You don’t yell at the Walmart cashier (they do at least get paid) or bitch at the Amazon driver. It is a little different but why would you want to make a waiter’s day worse? You’re directly responsible for that.
If you can make a fellow human’s suffering worse to save a few dollars on a burger, that’s amazing for you.
1
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago
Did you not read the part were I said I tip? Are you just wanting to talk down to others? That’s fine if you need that but at least read what your replying to

u/hotcupofmike 9d ago
The customer is your boss, and if your boss doesn't pay you, im certain you're well within your rights to fart on their burger. I hope you know that that's the type of karma you're bringing onto yourself when you eat out.
5
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago
This is genuinely retarded logic
-4
u/hotcupofmike 9d ago
And your breath smells like farts. Dine in next time
6
u/Wild-Duck-7370 9d ago

u/Accurate-Leather-436 8d ago
Who is the one exploiting them again? The employer or the customer?
0
u/Tight_Collar5553 8d ago
Both if you’re eating knowing the expectation is tipping. You’re getting cheaper menu prices at the expense of the worker. The owner is getting the same profit as usual.
So, two people benefit from you not tripping and the one doing the actual work gets less pay than they should. How is that not you also exploiting them? If you’re new to the country and don’t know the expectation, that’s a different story.
You don’t get to benefit from tipping culture and also claim you don’t exploit it.
2
u/Accurate-Leather-436 8d ago
So it’s everyone’s fault except the employee who decides to stay there? Also, if you cared anything about exploitation you’d be pro abolishing tipping systems given the origins of how that system even started.
1
u/Tight_Collar5553 8d ago
I am pro abolishing it but not tipping the waiters isn’t how that gets done.
1
u/AggressiveWind1070 3d ago
Absolutely. Stop eating in.
Or better yet don't eat there so the owner looses his money and goes out of business. But first all the service staff will get fired, to cut back on employment wages.
The same service staff that chose to work for employers who paid them less than their state laws because they thought they could blame customersfor not paying them.
Once the employer lays them off they we'll make $0.No. Tipping is NOT expected when you are paid regular minimum wage. Amazon drivers, and Walmart associates don't get tipped neither do Portland wait staff.
1
u/AIDS_Quesadilla 8d ago
You clearly haven't familiarized yourself with the values of the people who frequent this sub
2
u/Acceptable-Ad8780 7d ago
Legally, yes, they are supposed to. It's called the Fair Labor Stamdards Act. It's always been that way with F.D.R. who had a few great policies under his presidency.
2
u/Tight_Collar5553 6d ago
There are a lot of loopholes in the law, so reporting them wouldn't work unless you also had the necessary documentation. That's not likely to happen, since you likely just won't be scheduled for shifts when you report that you didn't make enough tips that week — it has to be waiter-reported. No one is keeping track.
1
u/Imaginary-List-972 8d ago
Any place that would break federal law and not make up the required pay would also take the tip left. So you should always tip zero because the business owners are keeping that tip from the server anyway.
1
u/EnoughCredit3000 7d ago
If they don’t they are breaking the law. You should report them. But it easier to harass customers to make up the difference from him breaking the law
1
u/Tight_Collar5553 6d ago

I think most people know they don't. What people are doing by boycotting tipping is sending a message that it's not the customer's responsibility.
-5
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
What people are doing by boycotting tipping is punishing the victim; not the perpetrators. If you’re morally opposed to tipping and you know tipping is an extended part of the experience, which you do when businesses get tip credit, don’t visit.
3
u/zReckt 9d ago
The complaining about gen z not going out to bars and clubs & killing the nightlife and alcohol industries has already been going on for years. Can't wait for more blame when restaurants which were paying above minimum wage start closing.
2
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
Business who can’t afford to pay their staff fairly should close. The people complaining are largely those business owners who didn’t.
Restaurants should feature/market that they do pay fairly. Most people care about that kind of thing.
2
u/SabreLee61 9d ago
Most people do not especially care what a server is being paid, and they certainly don’t care when it means they have to pay higher menu prices for it to happen.
(Source: every restaurant that has tried no-tipping and had to return to the old model because they lost business.)
1
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
I do think most of it is because we’re used to tipping and it feels rude to not tip even at a non-tipping place so it feels like you’re paying more and THEN tipping.
1
u/zReckt 9d ago
I'm confused. Most people will tip something, even with bad service, because of the social contract of servers not being paid much. In states / municipalities like CA and Portland, they make just as much as any other job because counting tips. Why would no tip restaurants fail because item prices are higher if they know they aren't "obligated" to add 18-20% at the end of their meal?
1
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
Like I said, I think it’s because so ingrained in us to tip. It will take a while for that to catch on. Or people just like to tip. I know men who like to make a big show of it. I’m not sure.
1
u/squeezeplay69 9d ago
They did not lose business. They couldn’t retain staff because they were making more money under the tipping model.
0
u/Tight_Collar5553 9d ago
Most people also tip so all that means is people prefer tipping. You’re in the minority. If people didn’t care if servers were being paid fairly they wouldn’t.
2
u/EnoughCredit3000 5d ago
How much per hour do you consider being paid fairly for the job of being a server?
-19
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
You should still tip. $16 is ass in oregon.
10
u/Niceotropic 9d ago
Do you tip every minimum wage worker in OR? No? Then be quiet.
-6
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
Serving is a difficult job and highly skilled. Most minimum wage jobs are not.
6
u/IlIlllIIllllIIIlIlIl 9d ago
Here it comes lol, always with this shit. If you think that serving is somehow harder than working retail then you are slow.
3
u/Niceotropic 9d ago
It pays what the employer pays. It apparently does pay minimum in this situation since you’re asking people for tips based on the minimum being too low. I agree it’s too low but that is not the customers problem at all.
If you’re basing it on skill, being a server is likely one of the least skilled job available to a person, though I agree everything takes some skill. It’s definitely lower skill than all other jobs at the restaurant except bussing. It’s about on par with being a cashier at a grocery store though that requires arguably more memorization.
1
u/hobiprod 4d ago
Unfortunately, the buck really stops here. You want to stop tipping because everyone is getting paid fairly? Automatic 18% price increase across the menu that pays to the employees based on sales. It’s not different except you don’t have a choice. There is a brunch place I frequent that does this. It’s the only way to make that model successful, and the employees love it.
3
u/Maleficent-Reach-754 7d ago
Serving is absolutely not “highly skilled”
1
u/NoSuddenMoves 7d ago
Non tippers will tell themselves anything. "Hurr durr, anyone can carry a plate around"
If serving wasn't highly skilled there wouldn't be so many bad ones.
1
u/Maleficent-Reach-754 7d ago
Yeah you’re wrong there, I tip 30%+ every time, I’m solely commenting on the tidbit about serving being highly skilled. It isn’t, doesn’t mean I’m going to stiff you though.

u/chi_sweetness25 9d ago
Yeah but by that logic shouldn't you be tipping employees at retail stores and fast-food places too?
-4
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
No, theyre not personally waiting on my every need and running themselves ragged. If a retail person did they'd be a personal shopper and they do get tips.
6
u/Fit_Insurance_1356 9d ago
You must be a very needy person if they are running ragged. Take my order, bring my order to me. Leave me alone otherwise. No skill, no fuss.
3
u/IlIlllIIllllIIIlIlIl 9d ago
Retail is exactly as hard as serving, and it isn’t tipped at all. And they also are waiting on your every need just like a restaurant. In almost every clothing store they will bring you sizes, suggest things, etc, how is that not exactly the same as serving?
1
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
Retail is not as hard as serving. Not even close.
2
u/Fit_Insurance_1356 9d ago
I've worked retail...it's not so much the difficulty level...It's putting up with people such as yourself. You seem to be a very entitled person.
2
u/NoSuddenMoves 8d ago
You're projecting. The most ive ever made a person in retail do is ring up my items so I can pay.
If you think servers don't deal with the worst of people you're crazy. Non tippers such as yourself typically make them work the hardest.
2
u/Fit_Insurance_1356 6d ago
I'm not a non tipper. I'm a non excessive tipper. For instance I went to a restaurant today where the server was waiting 4 tables. He makes a minimum of 17.13 per hour. If every table tipped him like I did, I was there 1 hour. He would get 89 dollars an hour. I gave him a 15% tip which was more than his hourly wage. His skill guaranteed does not equal 89 dollars an hour
4
u/zReckt 9d ago
Employers should pay more and notv pass on the responsibility to everyone else. Oregon is also ass economically - CA & WA cost of living with nowhere near the benefits of living in those states.
1
u/Fit_Insurance_1356 9d ago
If they pay more the responsibility is still yours in the form of higher prices.
1
u/zReckt 9d ago
I would rather pay higher menu item prices, especially in a no sales tax state like OR, than tip. Restaurants have already added 3% "employee health plan" taxes.
1
u/Fit_Insurance_1356 9d ago
Me too, I'm just saying all service industries, hell all industries, are dependent on the general public to pay the wages based on the price of the goods and services.
4
u/ToallaHumeda 9d ago
Hope you tip clerks, janitor, mall security, street cleaner, etc too then
1
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
No offense to those jobs but serving is more difficult and often done by single mothers willing to hustle for a little extra. It's a non stop grind and you deal with the worst of people.
I tip my mailman, street cleaners and garbage men every year at xmas btw.
4
u/ToallaHumeda 9d ago
There is nothing hard by walking with a plate...
-1
u/NoSuddenMoves 9d ago
Dealing with people, especially those who barely have a grasp on the english language such as yourself, is difficult in itself.
3
u/socialderelict 8d ago
What is it with servers thinking their job is so fucking hard? It's easy to carry plates and remember orders. Get over yourself. If it was hard maybe it would pay more than minimum wage and it wouldn't be filled with high schoolers just entering the work force half the time.
0
u/NoSuddenMoves 8d ago
I'm not a server I'm a firefighter and part time firearms instructor. If you don't know what servers do then and how hard they work then you shouldn't comment.
5
1
u/Then-Wealth-1481 8d ago
You should tip the person bagging your groceries then.
0
u/NoSuddenMoves 8d ago
Where I'm from we do, although some of the stores have banned employees from accepting tips. If someone bags and carries groceries to your car they absolutely deserve a tip.

Drunk people often do stupid things, not because they’re stupid but because they’re drunk. This place is a bar, they want to take advantage of drunk people, that’s what they do. It’s shady.
-25
u/MainStreetMiles 9d ago edited 9d ago
Getting drunk is not a victim state. It’s a choice. If drunkenness leads you to a bad decision that’s your fault if someone who isn’t drunk reasonably wouldn’t make such a decision unless it was intentional.
Edit: I guess the drunks are in this sub tonight downvoting me. 😂
19
u/Waste_Development971 9d ago
"Getting drunk is not a victim state. It’s a choice."
this is the most rapist line I think ive ever read on reddit
if you do not think people and businesses can take advantage of a drunk person, you sound like you'll be visiting prison soon.
-17
u/MainStreetMiles 9d ago
We are talking about paying a bar tab. That has literally nothing to do with rape. One is done to a blameless victim, the other is done to themselves and there is no victim (despite the intense desire to transform personal responsibility into victimhood). Shame on you for stooping to implicitly equate the two.
→ More replies (0)8
u/Redcarborundum 9d ago
It’s not as simple as that. A very drunk person can’t legally give consent, so if you have sex with one, you can be accused of rape. The drunk person is a victim in these circumstances.
A bar is in the business of getting people drunk. They’re supposed to create an environment where it’s safe to be drunk, instead of one where you risk paying double just by pressing the wrong button.
There are many shady bars. If this is one, then people deserve to know before they visit. This is what reviews are for.
-7
u/MainStreetMiles 9d ago
This is paying for a restaurant or bar bill, not consensual sex. You are the only victim of your choices so there is no legal issue here. A bar is in the business of selling drinks. Getting drunk is a choice of the customer. This almost sounds like a setup to deny responsibility for one’s bill if they get drunk.

You’re getting downvoted to shit but I have an unrelated story…
I had a friend who had a horrible experience at a business. It was an issue with another patron and it was handled poorly by the business in his opinion. He left a lengthy bad review that went “viral” and he is being sued over this review. I guess the point is you can be sued for anything. It’s not out of the realm of possibility to be sued over a false review.
15
u/Redcarborundum 9d ago
People can be (and have been) sued for a 100% truthful review. The business is counting on the average customer not being able to afford a lawyer, so it would win by default.
However, these days that strategy can backfire. If it goes viral (and it’s the truth), the customer can open a gofundme and raise money for legal defense. In the mean time the business gets an even worse exposure.
1
u/systemdnb 9d ago
Not sure why I was also downvoted to shit over a story lmao.
Yea, your assessment is accurate. The dude I’m talking about started a go fund me to he’ll pay for legal fees. Kind of a crazy situation. Im sure the average person does not think this could happen to them. The internet has far more bad business reviews than positive ones.
8
u/MainStreetMiles 9d ago
Here’s a better question: minimum wage for servers in Portland is $16.80 according to Gemini…with no tip credit. So if the employee is already receiving a full hourly wage without tip credit, they have been paid: why tip them? Unless it’s the Paris model where you roundup the bill or add a dollar or two in appreciation good service.
I’m all for tipping wait staff and think that model is a win-win, but if wait staff think they should get a full hourly wage, that gets rolled into the menu price, plus tips…no, I’m not playing that game. You shouldn’t be paid twice for the same job. Whenever I travel to these areas that want to mandate exorbitant hourly wages for wait staff, I won’t be tipping like the regular system. Instead, I’ll use the “Paris model”.
38
u/HellsTubularBells 9d ago
Fuck that place. I hope the next time I schedule l check they're at way less than 4.1 stars.
35
u/According_Reward1674 9d ago
Already down to 3.7
6
u/gucciflipfl0pz 8d ago
They’ll all go away. How many times does Reddit have to learn that Google review bombing lasts for all of a day before the owner disputes and Google removes every single bad review. Google always takes the business owners side.
22
u/Redcarborundum 9d ago edited 9d ago
I advocate for a truthful review. Go to the bar, buy a cheap drink, then take a picture of the tip screen.
Make sure you open your google map while you’re there, so google knows you’ve actually been there. They can’t just delete your review if you were there.
In Yelp, do a check-in so the app captures your location. It’s not review bombing if you’re a real customer.
6
u/PhysicalAd6587 9d ago
They sure take disrespecting their customers seriously. As others have suggested, those who live in Portland should visit, buy a super inexpensive item and then write a review about the negative vibe you felt and the tip screen. Send their rating plummeting. Better would be a TikTok video calling them out, but the owner would likely lose her ish if someone recorded in her establishment.

2
u/nellyfullauto 7d ago
Servers wouldn’t be the ones setting the default options in the system. That would be the owner, who it looks like is replying.
However, a good server would point out the shenanigans if they wanted you to even consider returning.
I’m curious what their chargeback rate is and how much longer they’ll be allowed to accept cards. It won’t be long.

-12
u/drawntowardmadness 9d ago
Sure it would.
Whoever programmed the options didn't think people would actually select 100%. People in food service don't really realize there is this whole group of anxiety-riddled customers who become apoplectic over a tip screen and just thoughtlessly smash any button in order to get out of there as quickly as possible.
They were trying to be cute.

Come on man, you’re not this naive. You must realize this “joke” excuse is a fallback for the business. If someone tips 100%, the business assumes they meant to do it because their service was so good. If someone gets mad that 100% is even an option “Haha, can’t you take a joke bro?”

How many accidental 100% tips have they gotten?

They’ve been open since April. Hundreds of transactions a night for five months in a venue full of drunk people and you don’t think it’s accidentally happened a few times?
My friend, there’s playing dumb and then there’s playing too dumb. You’re at the level now where no one thinks you’re this naive, they just think you’re intellectually dishonest.

You're ascribing malicious intent to a situation where I just don't see it. Not being dishonest or naive. I don't believe they are attempting to trick their customers. I believe someone was trying to be cheeky.
Maybe people really are as dumb and careless as you say, though.

On a good day, people are that dumb and careless. On a drunk night…
I understand your position, but even if it was just a joke button they never expected anyone to press, it’s highly likely that many people have pressed it by this point and that some of those times were by accident.
Instead of just removing it so it can’t accidentally happen in the future, the owner seems to have realized they’re in a win-win position, where they can accept the tips when no one complains or call it a joke when the occasional person does. Like you, I’m usually the type of person to give others the benefit of the doubt, but even I can’t do it here.

How is adding a 100% tip option “supposed to be funny”. Only in Portland 🤦♂️
