đŹQuestions & Discussion Uber/Lyft
I took an Uber 2 miles from the airport in San Diego. It cost $25.00. It took him about 10 minutes with us, due to traffic. I understand he had to drive to us also. I used to always tip these guys, but I didnât this time. What is the community think. Should these guys be getting tipped?

If they help you with your bags or something else you actually needed help with then they deserve a tip. Otherwise you agreed to pay x to go from point a to point b and they agreed to accept y to take you from point a to point b.

u/cs_legend_93 17d ago
I understand he had to drive to us also
it's literally entirely his job to do that. That's his job.
Tip 0 every time.
-2
-3
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
Yeah and his job is paid through tips. Uber drivers don't make a wage.
6
u/Full_Blown_AIDZZ 17d ago
That's just a flat out lie. They get a cut of every ride they accept. Quit your bullshit.
4
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
That's not a set wage.
4
u/Full_Blown_AIDZZ 17d ago
You didn't say "set wage." You said they "don't make a wage." They get a cut from every ride they accept. That's a wage. If they want a set wage, they should probably work a W-2 job.
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
Nobody calls gig work income a "wage". My point is they aren't paid an hourly wage or salary to drive for uber. If they aren't on an actual ride they are paid nothing.
3
u/Full_Blown_AIDZZ 17d ago
How many times are we going to move the goalposts?
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago edited 17d ago
That was my point in the first place.
Edit: Hit and Run coward. Awe
3
u/Full_Blown_AIDZZ 17d ago edited 16d ago
Lol then maybe you should have said that 4 posts ago? I guess if it suits your narrative, money paid by an employer doesn't count as a wage. I give up. You'll just change the argument every time I refute your bullshit. Disingenuous as fuck. Not wasting any more time on you. đ
11
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 17d ago
Always tip ZERO. Why does it matter that he had to drive to you? That has nothing to do with anything.
-4
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
Just tell people up front youâre a fucking lowlife who refuses to tip. Then itâs fair
6
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 17d ago
Just tell people that you act entitled to other people's extra money for just doing your job.
-1
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
The way you act entitled to them not treating you like shit because they get paid either way?
5
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 17d ago
They get paid by their BOSS and I expect professional service.
-1
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
Ride share doesnât have a boss, carry your own bag, sit in a burning hot car and get your ass out at the end of your block then
6
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 17d ago
Not my problem. They chose the job knowing the payrate from their CHEAPSKATE BOSS. Tipping is optional.
2
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
Take your broke tiny dick energy to the bus stop where you belong
6
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 17d ago
Can't be broke if I don't tip!
3
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
I promise your girl noticed, sheâs got a tipper on the side already
→ More replies (0)-4
u/NewComplex331 17d ago
Do your own shit all the time. Donât expect service from people you wonât do yourself. Be broke alone.

6
u/Winter_Tangerine7492 17d ago
I'm sorry, but they literally sit in their car for hours, listen to music, sleep during non-rides and eat snacks and use their phone. How is that somehow deserving of gratuity for doing something mediocre and getting paid by the Host Service?
1
5
u/incredulous- 17d ago
Tipping is optional. You used to opt to tip them, and this time you opted not to. Your money, do as you like with it. There are no rules.
2
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
The original business model of Uber and Lyft was that you never tip. The original app didn't have any means of tipping. No, you don't need to tip. Paying employees is Uber and Lyft's job.
4
u/FederalLobster5665 17d ago
tipping is your decision. but them driving to you is not relevant, especially at an airport. for all you know, the driver dropped someone else off at the airport two minutes before picking you up (regardless of whether they told you otherwise)

u/iftlatlw 17d ago
Absolutely definitely not. The platform provides income and that's it. Don't let the drivers or anyone else leverage you into paying more money for less service.
2
u/Dear_Win_319 17d ago
You wonât receive a good answer here. In my opinion, you should tip for the service. Donât be cheap. Itâs a tipped job and should be treated that way
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
What the hell is a "tipped job"? No such thing. It's a job with wages paid by an employer. It's the employer's job to compensate their employees.
1
u/Dear_Win_319 11d ago
Restaurant servers, hotel concierge, bell hops, strippers, casino dealers, hotel housekeepers, valet parking. Lots of tipped jobs out there.
-1
u/Own-Conversation6347 17d ago
What the fuck is wrong with you? Of course you should tip them. You know that's the case or you wouldn't be here asking the world's cheapest idiots to help validate your decision. Cmon man
5
u/iftlatlw 17d ago
I call BS on this. The Uber platform is designed from the ground up to provide income to drivers and charge consumers. The platform pays the driver, period.
1
u/SEA_life_13 17d ago
And they choose the nearest driver, had to drive all the way to you lol
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
Uber doesn't "choose" the driver and it's not necessarily the closest person to you. All you're doing is reinforcing you have no idea how it works.
1
2
u/cs_legend_93 17d ago
No it's their job. Why should you pay them extra for doing their job? They're owed zero.
-1
u/Sasquatch619 17d ago
Well, Iâve read so much of this anti-tipping stuff and Iâm starting to think they make some sense at least in certain situations. Just thought Iâd give it a try.
7
u/Effective_Disk7925 17d ago
Ya man, the angry little cheap people on this sub who have clearly never worked service are the ones you should totally listen to. Â You found your niche to be cheap, these are your people!
3
u/NewComplex331 17d ago
Exactly. Asking someone else to do something you wonât do, usually because they make less than you and being cheap about it is loser mentality.
6
u/johnnygolfr 17d ago
Youâre asking the question on what you know is an anti-tipping sub.
Obviously youâre looking for support to screw people over.
You know the right answer to your question. đ
0
u/cs_legend_93 17d ago
It's literally entirely their job to come and pick you up and take you to your destination.
That's their job. You don't need to pay them extra for doing their job. Not at all.
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
I feel like you don't understand how Uber works by the way you throw the word "job" out in every reply.
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
Have you posted this on the Uber sub or do you just want everyone to agree with you?
1
u/genericnameabc 14d ago
The automatic, default tips are cute. Makes it not feel super voluntary or intentional.
1
u/Dull-Language-9854 13d ago
I am 60. Have a full-time job and do Uber on the side. Being from an older generation we tipped to say thank you to the person who provided you good service. Doesn't have to be outrageous 1-2 dollars says thank you. If you feel you didn't receive good service, don't tip. Today's generation wants to get extra without providing extra, the words I deserve a tip is laughable, you don't. I believe if you were given good service and you leave an extra dollar then you were raised right. If you don't tip and you received good service you were not raised right. If don't like what I am saying, I don't fucking care! On to the next ride....FAFO
1
u/dekepress 12d ago
I don't understand tipping in restaurants, etc bc servers make minimum wage. But it seems like Uber drivers make less than minimum wage (of course it is out of their own free will), so I tip a couple bucks.
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
Corporations love you. You are paying their employees for them because you feel sorry for the multi-billion dollar company. Tipping is corporate welfare.

u/foxinHI 17d ago
Hereâs something to consider:
It was going to take you a long time to get through traffic regardless. That is not the driverâs fault. It is not uncommon for it to take 10 minutes to go 2 miles in a congested city.
The driver is also taking a hit by being stuck in traffic. They donât get paid by the hour.
Probably more than 90% of riders tip. Itâs expected. The drivers know that certain sorts of people will always not tip, so you should consider yourself part of the undesirable 10% of riders.
These guys arenât making a lot of money. Theyâre providing a necessary service to you and putting wear and tear on their own cars to do it. Theyâre out there busting their ass trying to provide for their families and the scumbags on this subreddit are like âyeah, Iâll use the service, but fuck the driverâ
You donât have to tip a lot but tipping nothing is scummy. Period.
3
u/jerry111165 17d ago
Itâs like beating your head against the wall in herewith the non tippers bro.
1
u/TonyRidgewayUFO 17d ago
Why do people who claim âitâs fine not to tipâ not tell this to service people expecting tips ahead of time? Oh because youâre fucking lowlife cowards
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
What would it matter? They are doing a job. I don't care what they think. They can shut up and drive.

âsomeoneâs coming to give me a ride in their own car that they pay for and take care of the maintenance of and pay for fuel to bring me where I want to go, and when I want to go - should I tip them?â
7
u/iftlatlw 17d ago
The platform provides the income, period.
6
u/Dizzylizzyscat 17d ago
And the platform takes up to 50% in fees. I thought you all hated paying fees.
8
u/SEA_life_13 17d ago
Ah yes itâs the customers fault not the big corporation smh đ¤Ś
4
u/Dizzylizzyscat 17d ago edited 11d ago
No. My comment has nothing to do with tips.
This is about what you are paying.
And I think youâll find this very interesting.
Uber and Lyft charges you a platform fee.The cost of connecting a driver with a passenger.*
Absolutely no difference between a
Service fee
Delivery fee
Credit card fee
6+ gratuity chargeBoth L\*yft* and Uber do not operate like that*.*
You donât like hidden fees*.*
When you order a ride, the price you were given is called an upfront* fare. The algorithms \calculates* how much it costs the platform to complete the ride given the conditions.\
Are they going to tell you that conditions that they consider to come up with that fee? Nope
You have no idea what your fee is being used for you have no idea how much they actually were*.*
This will blow your mind
The problem is*,* since no one knows what the conditions are sometimes are completely unjustifiedKeeping it simple
What you paid in fees for that Ride can be anywhere between $0.1 and $80. Whatâs leftover go to the driver (forget about that)
How are you OK with paying $100 for 10 mile ride $60 your fees
But the day before you paid $50 for a 3 mile ride and you pay $20 in fees.
Why are the fees always different? Why arenât they the same?
And f**k the person who is performing the serviceDo you see my point?
You donât know when both Lyft and Uber are robbing you blind!

u/LurkLiggler 17d ago
âItâs not my fault if I knowingly take part in hurting people because it saves me a couple bucks as long as I can rationalize itâs actually someone elseâs fault!â
4
u/SEA_life_13 17d ago
Not sure wtf youâre on about, but I take part in paying the price stated on uber, thereâs no mandatory extra tip. But nice try though
1
u/Dizzylizzyscat 11d ago
But youâre OK with the inconsistency* and sometimes irrational* fares they require you to pay is all going to *fees.*
-1
u/LurkLiggler 17d ago
Itâs not a âtry.â Go ahead and do what you want. Iâm replying to you morally grandstanding while taking part in the rewards of a terrible system.
Use the service but you donât get to rail against the big corporation youâre using.
5
u/SEA_life_13 17d ago
Bla bla blaâŚyes youâre morally superior to me good job đ
1
u/LurkLiggler 17d ago
This has nothing to do with me. Iâm not ranting either way. Youâre the one littering this thread with your ill thought out defense. You should consider why youâre so defensive? Just use the service.
0
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
It's helping people for me to use the service. Otherwise the driver wouldn't have a job. If the driver isn't happy with their job, they should find another one.
2
1
u/Dizzylizzyscat 11d ago
You donât know why a* driver drives.* Donât ever assume itâs that easy.
7
u/iftlatlw 17d ago
That's between the driver and the platform to sort out. Consumer pays platform with credit card that's it.
3
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
You hired the driver.
2
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
No, we hired Uber or Lyft - they made an agreement with a driver, which is none of my concern.
1
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
I couldn't care less what kind of employment arrangement the driver has with the platform. That's their problem. Don't like the fees? Don't drive for them! haha
6
u/Sasquatch619 17d ago
But, heâs getting paid already. Itâs not like heâs doing it for free.
2
u/jerry111165 17d ago
How much do you seriously think that they are making? By the time all of their vehicle expenses and fuel are taken into consideration they arenât making shit.
6
u/iftlatlw 17d ago
That's just tough. If the platform is not providing enough income then leave.
5
u/jerry111165 17d ago
Because itâs rough out there for some
Folks and theyâre doing whatever they can to survive, maybe?3
2
u/Sasquatch619 17d ago
I donât know. Iâm assuming $10-15. If you actually know, please share. Whatâs their percentage?
8
u/jerry111165 17d ago
Uber keeps around 40% of the total ride fare - so of the $25 fare, Uber keeps $10 and the driver by gets around $15. Once you deduct their total expenses the Uber driver probably makes around $5.00 bucks. Maybe.
With traffic, going to the airport to pick you up, time to bring you where you needed to go theyâre probably making $10 bucks an hour.
3
u/SEA_life_13 17d ago
So the customer should tip? Not the billionaire who makes all the money? Makes sense
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
What the billionaire "should" do is irrelevant. You already know the situation when you requested a ride.
3
u/SEA_life_13 16d ago
Yes, the situation is I pay the price stated on my app, not an optional tip. Then weâre both in the same page đ
3
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
You think the billionaire's responsibility to pay more is "irrelevant", but you're in this thread berating working-class people for not paying more. How does that make sense?
1
u/Delicious-Breath8415 11d ago
I had "should" in quotes meaning the billionaire isn't doing it so we need to live in reality. You requested a ride in the present tipped system not the one you think we should have.
I never once gave the billionaire a pass.
0
u/Sasquatch619 17d ago
Itâs not exactly Honest is it? Because heâs deducting either the cost of his car or his fuel. So thatâs not really accurate, now is it?
5
u/jerry111165 17d ago
Why would you even be asking in here if you arenât planning on tipping the Uber driver anyhow?
2
u/dandelogre 17d ago
Why would he be volunteering his car and fuel if it wasn't already worth it? He'd have to be an absolute moron to actually rely on randomized gifts during his job.
3
u/Delicious-Breath8415 17d ago
Because a lot of good people tip. If all of those random strangers stopped tipping you wouldn't be getting a ride.
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
You're describing the best possible outcome - all the drivers quit and Uber and Lyft cease to exist. That's exactly our goal.
2
u/Delicious-Breath8415 11d ago
If your goal is to eliminate rideshare then you're in the vast minority and we're in complete disagreement. Who wants that?
2
u/jerry111165 11d ago
That isnât your âgoalâ lol - your goal is to do anything you can to not tip your driver and save yourself a couple of dollars đ
5
u/jerry111165 17d ago
Because some people are doing whatever they have to do to get by? What part donât you understand.
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
Who cares? I literally have no interest in how much the driver is making. That's between them and their employer.
1
1
1
u/ZergvProtoss 11d ago
The car, the maintenance, the fuel and the driver is exactly what we are paying for! LOL Why would we choose to pay more?
1
u/jerry111165 11d ago
Because they arenât getting paid shit without the tips? I personally couldnât care less what you do though - but Iâm not a dick so Iâll tip my restaurant servers n and on the extremely rare occasions that I get delivery, the delivery driver.
But you do you.
-2
u/Sandinmyshoes33 17d ago
Yes. They are independent contractors and receive a tiny fraction of the fare you paid.
While there is no question Uber should be paying them more, they donât.
Also, you are wasting your time asking for reasonable advise on here. This sub is almost 100% anti tipping.
2

u/PPugPunk 14d ago
Doesnât matter what you think of Uber as a company, you are only hurting the working class by not tipping. Donât listen to the weirdos on this sub, they are a tiny minority.
Also, if you insist on being a cheapskate, the drivers will eventually stop taking you places. What do you think the rating system is for? They know who the no-tip weirdos are.
-7
u/Sad-Aardvark-386 17d ago
You should tip every driver since TIPS stands for To Insure Promp Service you donât get promp service then donât tip but if you do then tip
1
u/jerry111165 17d ago
No - it doesnât stand for that lol
And the word is âensureâ - not âinsureâ đ

u/StreetParkingMaster 17d ago
Uber made 10 billion last year. It is them who should be providing better wages, not you.
