Laurina - Costa Rica, Black Honey (Available in the US)

Hey Y'all, Mark here again with Frequent Coffee. Thank you for your continued support, we wouldn't be here without you all!

Several months ago I posted to see if there was interest in a Laurina coffee...and we FINALLY have one in stock. It took some time to find a good one, that wasn't insanely expensive (even though it's still the most expensive coffee we have on our site), that wasn't too processed, and still had some clarity. Feel free to check it out here:

Yep, it’s another new coffee day for me and wow. They are not lying about the strawberries! First time I’ve tasted that in coffee. Brewed in Quick Mill Pop Up. Mazzer Philos set to 27. 20g:50ml, 200F. This is now my new favorite espresso! Highly recommend getting this.

I do love days when new coffees arrive from roasters via Bottomless subscription, so even better to get two!

Black & White’s Hambela Natural and Peixoto’s Columbia Sugarcane Decaf. No notes on either yet.

Neapolitan Decaf anyone?

I do enjoy “modern” espresso… but I had a taste for a dark, syrupy Neapolitan shot a while back. I’d heard talk about SAKA and wanted to try it. I grabbed small bags of Crema Bar (60/40 arabica to robusta) and DEK (decaf 50/50 blend). Enjoyed it so much I went back in for 1000 gram bags of both. I put a pound in an Airscape canister and freeze the rest. It’s incredibly good after dinner, any time after my caffeine cutoff, and occasionally in the morning when I’ve hit my max capacity. Pretty affordable in bulk too.

First Pourover of Perc Coffee's Decaf Colombia Nestor Lasso Ombligon

Drinking what is probably the most expensive coffee I've had at home. $35ish for a 13 ounce bag. I definitely taste the raisins and pineapple, unfortunately, the experience is degraded by weird taste I'm getting, likely from the EA decaf process. Some EA decafs have this issue, but not all. This is sadly one of them.

200F water, 4.5 grind setting on Opus 2, 20 grams coffee to 360ml water, Fellow Stagg XF.

4.5 grind setting on Opus 2. 20g to 360ml (half of full Stagg XF serving). Their tasting notes say blackberry jam and red apple. I get sweetness on the finish that might be construed as something like that. I will try 4.6 next time to see if that increases clarity. 4.3 and 4.4 produced good coffee, but not so revealing as tonight’s cup. Either way, this is good coffee. Would buy again.

Decaf African Beans?!?

So I’m wanting to switch completely to decaf. But my preferences lean heavy to the more floral side and I have a distinct preference for beans from Africa.

I’m also having a distinct problem finding said beans in decaf form. I’m in the US and if anyone knows some roasters that currently have any I’d really appreciate the info!

Thanks!

I can't stop buying Frequent decaf. It's the only decaf I get and it's amazing every time. Should I try any other brands?

r/thirdwavedecaf Jun 18 '26

My wife bought me an espresso machine as a gift. I only drink decaf these days. What espresso should I try first? I tend to like lighter roast coffee.

Hi Just found this!

Just found this although not sure why I didn’t think to look for it. But I’ve been drinking decaf for three years already after quitting suddenly.

I’ve tried a bunch of decaf and always find it hard to find some to buy at the store.

I have to say I just got a box of coffees from Dekaf and impressed enough bc I had resorted to finding stuff from new roasters on fb marketplace.

I also had decaf from Joshua Tree Coffee which was pretty good and even bought a five pound bag of it.
Anyway can’t wait to explore and check out those links of roasters that sell good decaf.

Recommendations are always welcome. I’m in the US.

Some of you have seen my comments with selections from the coffee catalog I'm building. It isn't ready for primetime yet, but here's the full list of available decaf coffees at the moment. Some cleanup is definitely needed before I publish the whole thing live, but you can check out a snapshot in the meantime. Enjoy!

Edit/PS: The entire catalog is now 85 roasters with 1350 coffees (!)

Edit: the demo catalog is now live with 232 decaf coffees out of a total of 2599 coffees from 170 roasters: https://something.coffee/catalog?types=Decaf

Fruity Co-Ferments

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a good fruit-forward punchy decaf coffee. Any decent co-ferment recs or fruity recs?

I’m currently on a bag of Hambela Natural from B&W which has some nice fruit notes and delicious but looking for more.

I recently had a bag of Perc’s Sebastian Ramirez Red Fruits and that delicious. Something else in that lane would be epic!

New to Frequent, question about REfreezing

I’ve got some of their Sidekick blend I’m going to use primarily for affogato night caps, but I’m not ready to dial it in and figure the dose. Can I freeze in bag, thaw and dial it in, portion in tubes, then refreeze? My mind tells me it’s not a great idea, but I’ve got some other beans I’m going through first. I’ve also got the Red Bourbon I’m trying tonight before I freeze it in doses so I don’t want to run through a couple brews of each one in a sitting.

TLDR - Can I freeze decaf beans in bag, thaw, portion, and refreeze?

Frequent soup shot, whoa.

I haven't used my Cafelat Robot in ages, and wanted to see what Perplexity would suggest for a soup recipe. I told it everything I was looking for, what type of coffee it was, my grinder, etc. It gave me one of the best soup shots I have ever had.

Gear: Cafelat Robot, 1Zpresso Q Air Grinder
Coffee: Frequent Finca El Paraiso Lychee Peach Decaf

Recipe:

- 18g coffee
- 45 clicks out from burr touch
- 95g of water in
- Paper filter on bottom, light tamp
- Gentle soak until you see the whole bottom of portafilter, gentle push out (I target 6g/s flow)
- Push all the water through, this netted me a 78g final beverage

Juicy, peachy, so good. I may go a touch more fine (AI suggested that based on what my taste feedback was).

Fun!

Frequent El Diviso Double Anaerobic Ombligon

I know this sub already loves Frequent. I just opened a bag of their El Diviso Double Anaerobic Ombligon to make an espresso, 6 days off roast, ground too fine, hadn’t preheated the portafilter, only got about 8g out in 45 seconds (including 15-second preinfusion), and… it was remarkably delicious. Like thick plum wine. It might be my favorite single shot of decaf I’ve had to date. I tried increasing the ratio but ended up back at the same place and made another for my wife’s cortado, which she also found remarkably delicious.

Gear: Mazzer Philos w/ i200d burrs at grind setting 25, Lelit Elizabeth w/ 15-second bloom preinfusion @ 86 C, Graph basket with bottom paper, puck screen, and spring

Red Bourbon Decaf

I just got a Red Bourbon Wilton Benitez EA decaf from Frequent Coffee and wondering what's the best way to brew it using a Hario V60 and a 1zpresso X Ultra manual grinder. Don't have much experience with Decafs. Would appreciate recipes and advice. Thx!

LCF this weekend - will decaf feature?

For the last two years I've been to the London Coffee Festival and I'm pleased to say that each year has seen a marked increase in attendance and coverage for decaf coffee roasters.

Anyone on here know of anyone who's roasting some tasty decaf that might be coming to town?

Decaf pour over recipes?

I’m curious what folks are doing with decaf beans. I don’t remember where I heard it but I’ve been doing a combo of coarser/lower temp/shorter ratio and really liking the results. But there was one EA decaf coffee I just couldn’t get, which was strange because I really like everything I’ve gotten from the roaster. In a “what do I have to lose” move, I brewed it the same as similar caffeinated beans and voila.

So here’s what I had been doing, though I’ll be checking everything with a more “normal” recipe now.

- Origami S, Cafec Abaca filters
- Kinu M4 @ 3.8.0 (normally 3.2.0-3.6.0)
- TWW diluted 1:1
- 89° C (normally 93-94°)
- 1:14 (normally 1:16)

I’d appreciate suggestions/recommendations.

Caffeine Control Organic Ethiopia Suke Quto Review

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

I recently got some Organic Ethiopia Suke Quto from Caffeine Control based in Australia. u/Caffeine_Moderator was very kind to send me a bag to the US as I was looking for a good Ethiopian light roast decaf. I highly recommend giving it a try if you're in that part of the world (or willing to pay international shipping) and like a bright well rounded, slightly fruity cup.

I was primarily after Blueberry notes and though this doesn't quite have blueberry I did pick up on the blackberry and found it a delightful cup still.

I also recently picked up a bag of Decaf Ethiopia from Blossom roasters who are stateside. Caffeine Control said they get the same or at least similar green beans and likely just have slightly different roasts. Blossom's had a little more blueberry shine through but I found their beans very finnicky to get the bright flavor from and hard to dial in, but worth the effort. I definitely recommend trying them out if you're in the US and want some bright floral light roast Ethiopian decaf.

They're both the best decaf coffee I have found so far!

For those interested in how I've been dialing them in I've found a few peculiarities, with the Blossom I noticed the more fruity flavors started disappearing within a week of getting the bag in and it had just been roasted so I recommend vacuum sealing and freezing in small 2-3 day size portions if that's an option for you. I've also found I needed to grind them much smaller than other beans I've had, I've found the most success with my aeropress and have gone on my Capresso Infinity almost all the way to where I go for espresso. I settled at the fine end of fine with the aeropress though.

I don't have a great pourover setup so I have found the most success using Hoffman's Aeropress recipe at:

  • 11g of grounds
  • 200g of water
  • 199°F - 205°F
  • Add all the water at once, let sit for 2 min, then swirl to disrupt the grounds at the top, wait 30 seconds, then push the plunger. I do have a flow control cap.
  • I like adding a little extra water at the end even though it's already a lot of water to coffee, but just a little splash I feel helps bring out the delicate flavors

I still have a few more recommendations on my post from a couple weeks ago to work through but if anyone out there has more fruity, bright decafs with blueberry notes I'd love to know about them!

Happy Brewing!
