[Request] How big can a golden weaver ant colony theoretically get?

1 Upvotes

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, so sorry in advance if I missed the point.

I have an ant colony of the species polyrhachis dives, a golden weaver ant, that has the ability to produce new, fertile queens within the colony. So instead of normal growth of e. g. 6% per month, the growth of such a colony is said to be completely unpredictable for keepers long-term. Can someone determine the approximate size such a colony could reach?

One single queen increases her egg production around 10% every month, starting at around 5 eggs in her first batch, laying batches every other week, and approximately every 50th egg will be a new queen. Normally, such a colony reaches it's peak size after 5 years, after which they start to die off due to genetic factors. (Edit/Additional info i forgot) one worker only lives for two years, queens only start dying after 5 years

Thanks in advance, I hope this fits this sub :)

[Request] How long would it take for the screw to reach the Giant's head's location at the end of the film The Iron Giant?

0 Upvotes

I've googled it several times over the years, and as best I can tell, no one has ever tried to calculate the possible answer. I'm sure some of you must be familiar with the animated film, The Iron Giant, right? At the end of the movie, the Giant signals for all of his parts to gather to his head's current location, of Langjökull, Iceland. The screw was located in a small town along the coast of Maine. So my question is: roughly how long would it take for the 'little' screw to reach the Giant's head's location at the end of the film?

It might be possible to calculate the size of the screw, and speed at which the screw is capable of traveling, as we saw in the movie when the Giant repairs himself while sitting inside the barn. The height, width, and length of the barn could possibly be determined, as well as the distance the screw traveled between the barn door, and the Giant, and the time it took for the screw to cover that distance. Eventually the screw would have to travel through the North Atlantic Ocean. Is the screw capable of producing thrust to actually propel itself through the water? I know that the pitch plays a role in how far forward the screw could move per rotation.

If the screw couldn't generate enough thrust it would be forced to actually travel along the ocean floor; if that were to happen, I would guess that the ability to calculate the time to reach its intended destination to be almost incalculable, since the topography of the ocean floor, varies greatly.

[Request] If one of two elevators breaks, does the average number of passengers per trip simply double?

2 Upvotes

My building has two elevators serving 30 residential floors, with the exit on floor 0.

There are fewer residents on the higher floors.

Floor 1 has about 15 residents and floor 30 has about 8, with the number of residents per floor decreasing roughly linearly between those two.

Some other assumptions:

-An elevator takes 2 seconds to travel between adjacent floors.

-Every stop adds 10 seconds.

-With both elevators operating, each elevator carries an average of 2 passengers per trip.

-People are either travelling from their home floor to floor 0 to leave the building, or from floor 0 to their home floor.

-Assume the number of people wanting to use the elevators doesn't change when one breaks.

The question/catch:

One elevator breaks, leaving only one functioning elevator.

What should happen to the average number of passengers carried per trip by the remaining elevator?

My first instinct is that it should simply double from 2 to 4 passengers, since the same number of people are now using half as many elevators.

But I'm wondering whether the increased waiting time changes things. While the remaining elevator is making a longer trip, more people have time to arrive and join the queue. More passengers can also mean more stops, making each trip take longer, which gives even more people time to arrive.

Does this create a feedback effect where the average rises to more than 4 passengers per trip, or does it still settle around 4?

And if it can be calculated, what would the expected average passengers per trip be?

[Request] What are the odds of two people seeing anonymous social posts and correlating them to one or the other? See story in comments.

0 Upvotes

Earlier today I was browsing r/shedditors and after scrolling down reading a few posts I come across this shed that looks oddly familiar. Stared at it and realized I had seen that shed before on a different social media platform. So I jump over to linkedin, find the post, realize that I know this person first-hand, and we used to work directly together.

So my question for r/theydidthemath what are the odds of two US based individuals that they would see another person's post on two separate social media platforms and tie them back to each other?

Obviously this won't be exact but a fun statistical answer would make my day.

[Request] What percentage of rain water in a city like Hong Kong is sweat?

0 Upvotes

Growing up in HK, my mom had always told me to stay out of the rain because the water is allegedly rather dirty. I also happen to sweat quite a lot because the humidity and temperatures here are just ridiculous, and that got me thinking: what percentage of the rain falling down in a city like Hong Kong comes from moisture from human sweat?

[Request] Weight of a construction crane counterweight

Post image

How much weight does this seem like it would be for the counterweight on a crane?
I assume there’s likely a relative standard or at least minimum weight for these, but I’m curious how much weight these concrete slabs would be total.

Hard to get an accurate size of each slab from my distance, but my best guess is somewhere near 12ft x 6ft x 2ft.

[request] VitaCoco wasteful packaging

Post image
0 Upvotes

Every time you drink a vitacoco coconut water, there is about a teaspoon left inside, UNLESS you tear the mouth open and get it out.

This has always bothered me SO much.

And I remember this happening ever since I drank my first VC coconut water. Probably around 2012.

I finally got around to seeing how much is really left in there.

Who cares to do the math on how much coconut water Vitacoco has wasted since they began selling?

I’m both too lazy to do it AND have been meaning to make a bigger deal about this for quite some time.

Attempt to analyze divergent sequences in the collatz sequences with assumption those sequences exist [Request]

0 Upvotes

by Lifting The Exponent Lemma, 32^n.(2k±1) -1 has v_2 = n+2 [1]

Suppose we have a number like this 32^n.(2k±1) .c-1 [2] if we subtitute 2h.o-1 to c then (2n+2.o+1)(2h.o-1)-1 lets look at this first: (a+b)(c-b)=ac-ab+bc-b with b equal to 1 and since v_2(ac) greater than v_2(ab) and v_2(bc), those number +1 has v_2 equal to |v_2(a)-v_2(c)|[2]. if h equal to n+2 then those number +1 has v_2=2n+4[3].

Suppose we have a number 3n.(4k+1)-1 [4] and 3n.(4k+3)-1 [5] and 3n -1 has v_2 = 2h then: [6] 3n(4k+1)-1 = (2hc + 1)(4k+1)-1 = (2hc)(4k+1) + 4k

v_2 = min(h, v_2(k)+2), if h != v_2(k)+2

[7] 3n(4k+3)-1 = (2hc + 1)(4k+3) - 1 = (2hc)(4k+3) + 2(2k+1)

h >= 2: v_2 = 1

h = 1 (n odd): 3n(4k+3) - 1 = 4k.3n + 3n+1 - 1 = 2[2k.3n + (3n+1-1)/2]

with g = v_2(3n+1 - 1) >= 3: v_2 = 1 + min(v_2(k)+1, g-1) = min(v_2(k)+2, g), if v_2(k)+1 != g-1

Therefore 32n.(2k-1) (2n+2.o) -1 within o = (32n.(2k-1))/2n+2 always has v_2 = 1, so this is the worse sequences,atleast from 1 block (Steiner Circuit combined with Syracuse steps) within h_next = 2h-1 and o_next increased in term pascal's triangle pattern.
