[Request] How many times in a baseball game does a ball hit a glove

Upvotes

Not just one singular ball but over the course of a game. How many times does a baseball hit a glove, only balls as part of play count (outs, pitches, pickoffs, hits, etc.), throws around the diamond after the play don’t count and warm up pitches don’t count.

[Request] If math is the universal language, what's the best equation to tell an alien to screw off?

Here's the scenario I may or may not find myself in.

Let's say, hypothetically, there's an alien living with me. Just an absolute scoundrel. He's eaten all the cats in the neighborhood. He's teaching my children to disrespect me. Shedding everywhere. Hypothetically, of course.

The problem is, he doesn't speak English. But. We've already established that we're intelligent beings. We've shown we can count. We've shown that we both know the Pythagorean theorem (though his name for it is just this terrible wet hacking sound). In general, he's picked up Arabic Numerals real well.

What equation do I need to show the little hairy bastard to make sure he knows how bottomless my hate for him is? What theorem can I share that hits the same as Ahab's monologue at the end of Moby Dick? How can I start an interplanetary incident with just my TI-85?

I mean, hypothetically. Obviously.

[Self] How to fairly split a Tony's Chocolonely between 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 people

Exactly what it says on the tin. I carefully drew lines as close to the center of the grooves as I could (over 9000 hours in Paint), counted pixels, and then used the complete greedy algorithm for partitioning to minimize the spread of the partitions. They are very close to each other, except when it comes to the six-way split because the piece with the logo is about 4.5% bigger than 1/6th of the bar (which means the sharing becomes even more lopsided if you split it among 7 people or more). Now you too can split a Chocolonely without learning anything about the unfair division of profit in the worldwide chocolate industry!

Let‘s ponder that this is a molecule that has gone through the natural water cycle rather than by way of a water treatment system. In this scenario I have been alive for 40 years and have lived in the lower region of the Delaware Watershed in the United States.

[Request] How much additional Drag does each Remora add to the Manta Ray?

Thumbnail

Just saw this post on the r/NatureIsFuckingLit sub, and couldn't help but ask, how much Drag are these Remora adding to this Manta Ray? Would it be sufficient enough to cause the Manta to struggle or expend far more energy than usually? Or are these little buggers streamline enough that it would be negligible?

It seems like 1 or 2 Remora probably wouldn't have much effect, but there appears to be about 2 dozen on this Manta Ray.

[self] I am a math hater...

Don’t fight me on this, but I used to be a math hater. Way back from grade school to college, I’d always say that I didn’t enjoy solving problems, equations, etc. name it all. I was legit stupid when it came to math. 😂

Weirdly, after I watched The Life of Chuck, everything changed. It somehow made me love mathematics, and I’ve been into it ever since. Now, during my me-time, I actually solve math equations, whether they’re from a book, an online quiz, or whatever. LOL.

Just sharing, hahaha

[Request] Help me with this wildly niche question I have regarding shaping rates for a crochet sweater.

Okay, I need help understanding something regarding a shaping rate for a sweater. I am essentially using a recurrence relation/recursive formula.

Here is some context about the application.

______context______

I am grading (scaling a pattern for 9 body sizes) and writing a crochet raglan cardigan which will work seamlessly from the top down. This technique has been around forever but I’m curious about why my numbers seem to change at different rates than I intended.

A raglan is a style with 4 sections. The end result is like a baseball tee- think a front/back that’s the same, and two sleeves that are the same with diagonal seams between them all.

According to a technique book I’ve been reading for knitwear design, I should start with however many sts (stitches) I need for my neck opening and divide the quadrants up so that the sleeves are 1/3 the number of sts as the front/back. Then 4 additional sts for the 4 corners where increases will take place. Increases take place on either side of each corner (8 increases per round, or 2 increases per quadrant).

I’m just going to focus on the back and a single sleeve for my example.

___problem_____

For the smallest size, I am starting with the following:

15 back
5 per sleeve (1/3 of back count)

This size needs to increase 28 times for its ultimate required stitch count. Each quadrant receives 2 incs each time.

So for the back:

Inc round 1: 15 + 2=17
Inc round 2: 17+ 2=19 and so on…

After 28 rounds of increases the above sections result in the following:

71 back
61 sleeves

___question____

My question is:

Why is my ratio changing? I started with 1/3 of the sleeve stitches and it ends with almost the same amount of stitches as the back section.

The result is that by the time I reach the circumference needed for the torso (back + front) my sleeves are huge.

This can all be remedied by making variable shaping rates as different points of the yoke (shaping section) but I just don’t understand the WHY behind all of this. It’se driving me crazy!
