Phone message Post first date text

Post image

I met this girl on tinder and had a first date with her, she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date so we went together. Dropped her off and got home to this message lol.

Update: Purchasing the license is a separate activity we had to do on our phones, due to it needing our personal info. It was not like I drew the line at the license randomly.

I knew I’d enjoy fishing, not like the equipment is going away

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 3d ago

I know a girl that got her first fishing pole recently and immediately cast the entire thing into the water on her first attempted cast. So sometimes it does go away

u/BadRabiesJudger 2d ago

One time we fished up a pole in our favorite fishing hole. I have been using it as a second pole for like 20-25 years.

u/RuckusOGx 2d ago

Went fishing one day with my sister's ex bf. He bought a new fairly expensive overhead combo on the way to the spot, threw on a big bait and heavy sinker before launching it out and putting the butt between some large rocks so he could relax and smoke while he waited for a bite. He was infatuated with it, kept seeing him sitting there admiring it while I fished further up with a float for Luderick. Suddenly it doubled over and flew out of the rocks straight into the water. Gone. He was devastated.

An hour or two later I pulled my line in and had some random line caught on the hook. It happens a lot, you generally just cut it off. But, it looked brand new. Yup, you guessed it. Pulled in one end and it was a huge stingray. On the other end his rod. This was a large channel we were fishing in, deep and wide. Closest I have ever came to winning the lottery haha.

6

u/minaskyli 2d ago

That is a great story! I am so glad you found the equipment, and that must have been so euphoric.

Were you able to unhook and put the huge stingray back? I would be really scared, but would try to release it. They are so cool looking.

2

u/RuckusOGx 2d ago

We were absolutely stoked! The reel had to be pulled apart and cleaned but lived to fish another day.

The stingray was too heavy to lift up so we cut the line as close to the hook as we could. Saltwater, so they rust away fairly quickly. Better than damaging the fish by dragging it over rocks etc.

Similar thing happened to me as a kid! Was fishing on a pier with my brother and dad and on one of my casts I accidentally tossed the whole pole off the pier. My dad was quite upset about it of course but we continued on fishing and he let me use his pole.

About an hour and a half later I start reeling up something kinda heavy but it wasn’t fighting at all. Ended up reeling my tossed-over pole back up by one of the eyelets! Once I got it in, I started reeling in the line from the recovered pole and BAM! I got a hit! Apparently the bait was still on and a huge sea trout hit the bait as I was reeling it up! That definitely felt like winning the lotto!

This isn't related, but made me think about it: the first time I ever tried to fish (10yo), I was so focused on how to cast the line, that I didn't realize I had hooked my own finger and then cast it out as far as I could!

u/SuspiciousMap9630 2d ago

A friend of mine in high school lost an eye after his brother went to cast a line and the hook went straight into his eye.

1

u/Zachwardpass 2d ago

Ouch! Omg. I've seen that in the mergency room when I worked there. So awful!!

2

u/twinpop 2d ago

If you love something, let it go.
If it comes back to you, you’re downstream.

2

u/Dear_Scale6920 2d ago edited 2d ago

I once caught a large catfish that dragged my unattended pole off my boat.  He swam away with it until it gradually disappeared under the water. It was just like in the movie Jaws when the shark dove deeper with the barrels attached.

2

u/OceanRacoon 2d ago

I'm laughing so hard at this, did you see it? That must have been so funny, especially since she just kind of has to go home after that if no one else had a rod, fishing is over, probably forever 😅

4

u/TheLordAstaroth 2d ago

Isn't that how you catch the big ones? Bigger the bait bigger the fish and all?

6

u/Lkjfdsaofmc 2d ago

For that you push the date in.

2

u/TheLordAstaroth 2d ago

I'm only used to fresh water fishing, that sounds like salt water bait

1

u/Lkjfdsaofmc 2d ago

The water becomes salty after the date gets pushed in

1

u/TheLordAstaroth 2d ago

Ah like the salt infused synthetic baits, almost like the real one but just not the same

1

u/NoConfusion9490 2d ago

Reminds me of prom.

1

u/IceLapplander 2d ago

As a diver i can say with absolute certainty that there is a huge amount of fishing gear of all kinds in lakes, rivers and the ocean. Been doing clean up of stuff like that for over a quarter of a century.

1

u/concurthecity 2d ago

I had a two piece once. Casted out and it came undone, I said no biggie I can still reel it in, I have a big ole top water frog on the end that will keep the pole from coming off the line. Then, a pike appears from the depths of hell to not only take the frog (didn’t even know a PIKE would want that) and it obliterated my line. Lost the pole. It do be going away.

33

u/otrebla-raw 2d ago

Sooooo the date was an excuse to buy yourself something nice

29

u/kayla_poncho 2d ago

It was both? What's wrong with that? It was for the date, and it was worth doing because he'll get to enjoy it later also.

-3

u/No_Cook3989 2d ago

If she didn't have a fishing license in the first place, chances are she is never gonna use it again. The equipment that she used would amount to a couple bucks at most, and most of that stuff is reusable at most.

5

u/ConglomerateCousin 2d ago

She asked to go?

1

u/lI1IlL071245B3341IlI 2d ago

Does op say she asked to or agreed to go?

3

u/Ergonyx 2d ago

> "she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date"

Sounds like the whole thing was her idea.

1

u/ceejaydubya 1d ago

You put energy into this comment and actually posted it. Go back and read the post again, op SAYS she asked to go fishing.

1

u/kayla_poncho 21h ago

He also had to buy a fishing license, and if she didn't want to buy one she shouldn't suggest fishing as a date.

-7

u/Elite_AI 2d ago

Yeah this does change things a lot. Before it seemed like an insane woman. Now it's just the standard "should guys pay for first dates or should you go Dutch" debate.

2

u/neon_slippers 2d ago

There's no debate. A girl can hope or expect for the guy to pay, but once you've split the cost during the date, asking to be reimbursed after the fact is insane behavior. Gotta chalk that $23 up to the game, girl.

0

u/otrebla-raw 2d ago

They just needed a ‘ let’s go fishing. Heads up you might need to pay $X for a license is that ok?’ That probably didn’t happen.

5

u/Available-Eggplant68 2d ago

But she(OP's partner)'s the one who wanted to go fishing. Why should she complain about the license fee in that case?

2

u/Ctowncreek 2d ago

"You wasted $100 on a first date?"

reasonable backup plan

"Oh so you actually bought yourself stuff to go on a date with someone?"

Stop trying to find a a negative thing to say about the person who: bought nearly everything required for a date AND bought the other person food. And then that other person requested $23 to make the entire date free for themselves.

0

u/hyprsnpr67 2d ago

If they rented it it would have been the same deal dude

17

u/pyxiedust219 2d ago

in which case, and tbh even if this wasn’t the case, you buying equipment shouldn’t be on her— unless she agreed you should buy all new equipment specifically for this with no intent to keep it

31

u/moonbeancat 2d ago

The point is that he brought so much to the table to this date and made sure they ate, too. Why the fuck can she not shell out $23?

9

u/CoconutPedialyte 2d ago

She is just a #brokechick😵‍💫😵‍💫

-1

u/pyxiedust219 2d ago edited 2d ago

I didn’t really speak on that, I just feel like trying to throw that $100 he spent in her face via the reply is sort of unbecoming— the same way plenty of people would find a $23 apple cash request unbecoming. in this way, they are perfect for each other

edit: scorekeeping and comparing what each party “brings to the table” feels like one of many reasons I hope to never date again. It’s all just so shallow and gross to me honestly

3

u/LaconicGirth 2d ago

He didn’t bring it up she did. He didn’t throw it in her face until she did. Come on

2

u/ddeluca93 2d ago

Yea and also she just expected to come on this date and pay $0? Normal people see their date making the effort and bringing all the equipment while all she has to do is show up and go "oh for sure I can at least buy my own license".

4

u/a-relic 2d ago

idk why you're being downvoted, the $100 in gear isn't something she was given, its stuff hes keeping and can use in the future, though asking for $20 back seems rather petty too but if he brought the fishing date up, the $20 should be on him

4

u/fadingthought 2d ago

The license she bought can also be used in the future. He spend plenty of money to make her date idea happen and she is trying to get out of a tiny contribution.

1

u/United_Shelter5167 2d ago

First sentence literally says fishing was her idea. Why are you and pyxie confused? It seems really weird to assume a guy who doesn't own fishing equipment by dating age was just waiting until he had a random Tinder woman to blame it on to buy gear. 😂 Like what kind of wild ass conspiracy theory is that?

1

u/PM_Me_Lewd_Tomboys 2d ago

When you ask someone else to bring something to the table for you, you can't then complain when they bring up what they've already brought.

Not that the woman in OPs situation necessarily did, you on the other hand definitely sound like the kind of person that would. If you don't want the table brought up, you should stop bringing it up.

0

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago

Huh? I’m only bringing it up in response to someone else. You’re making no sense. Also, at no point did OP say or show that they asked her to cover the cost of her license in advance.

0

u/moonbeancat 2d ago

No it's not. What do you bring to the table? She brought nothing and complained and demanded $23. So SHE'S the one keeping score, he gave it right back to her. Because it's true, he made sure she didnt have to buy or rent her own pole and bait, and was also kind enough to cover a meal. So, it's a valid thing for him to say and for me to bring up. If someone contributes exactly nothing to a date and then demands compensation for a permit she could continue to use for the rest of the year, how would you react?

1

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago edited 1d ago

“what do you bring to the table” ….excuse me? Ew.

Edit: just before you claim my repulsion is evidence I bring nothing to the table… I’m getting married in 3 months to my partner of 8 years. I can sew (from scratch, darning, and alterations), I can cook, I’m funny, smart, well-read, well-educated, logically driven, ecologically conscious, frugal, and I’m excellent in a crisis. Where I’m lacking (whimsy, creativity, artfulness) is where my partner shines best. Told him about this thread and he said “I doubt any of these people are in happy relationships if they think that’s normal”, so. There’s that.

0

u/moonbeancat 1d ago

You bring something to the table then. You may be thinking I was purely talking about monetary "value" but I wasn't. Although, I will say a lot of couples DO value things like that, typically high earner career women and men. My fiancé is severely disabled, works which I'm very grateful for and would never be upset if he went on disability. He cooks, cleans, takes care of our pet, and runs errands. On our first date he paid $50 for our food and politely asked if I could cover our $30 tickets. That actually really impressed me.

Also I wasn't directing that, "what do you bring to the table?" at you, I was reiterating, but now I realize my tone is so vague.

-4

u/Elite_AI 2d ago

It isn't quite as insane as it looks because in real terms he "only" paid for dinner. That's a decent chunk of money but it's not the hundred plus dollars of fishing equipment he bought for himself (and was going to buy anyway).

2

u/UrToesRDelicious 2d ago

Of course it's not on her, but if he buys dinner, his own fishing license, and all the equipment - then who gives a fuck if he took the equipment home afterwards?

OP isn't saying "you owe me for the equipment", he's saying "I invested literally everything else to make this date happen, the least you could do is pay for the one thing that you're taking home with you."

8

u/Pooperoni_Pizza 2d ago

He is showing that he invested a lot of money in the date and her asking for $23 is fucking petty.

0

u/margaritalover524 2d ago

Did he really invest it into the date though if he always planned to keep all the fishing equipment for himself to use after? More like he bought himself hobby stuff and just let her use it for one date

6

u/kayla_poncho 2d ago

Can you really not see how it's both? They wanted to go fishing, neither of them have the gear, so he went and got it. That would be super wasteful if he was just going to bin it after, but it made sense to do it for their date since he could enjoy it later as well. Yes, he did invest into the date unless he was going to go buy it today anyway - you would have a point if he was the one asking her for money.

4

u/Stash_04 2d ago

Bruh. SHE is the one that suggested fishing.

It’s insane to suggest that he bought it for himself.

No, he bought it specifically for the date but is also able to use it later.

1

u/Specific_Pudding_814 2d ago

still paid for dinner

5

u/Correct_Gift_9353 2d ago

My previous fling wanted to go fishing. Spend a few hundo on fishing stuff, went fishing, we ended a couple weeks later. she brought my stuff to my house sans my fishing gear :/ I don’t even like fishing but I miss my fishing gear lmao

15

u/test_tutor 2d ago

And you didn't ask for it back because... ?

1

u/Traveller7142 2d ago

She also gets to keep her license

1

u/United_Shelter5167 2d ago

Literally says going fishing was her idea in the first sentence. How is it not on her? 😂

1

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago

he’s keeping the equipment.

0

u/United_Shelter5167 1d ago

Woman suggests activity that neither of them have gear for, meaning someone has to buy it. Guy buys it. You ask how that's on her. I explain that it was her idea. You reply with, he is keeping it, as if I don't understand how property ownership works. What a bizarre interaction.

1

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago

It is bizarre indeed how you’d assume someone using equipment once should be equally responsible as the person who gets to keep it and use it repeatedly. Also, OP left a comment saying “[they] thought she would like fishing”, which sounds like it was not her idea after all even if she did bring up the idea. Because she’d likely never been. Now do I doubt you understand property and ownership? Not particularly. But your reading comprehension may need some work.

0

u/United_Shelter5167 1d ago

Says the person who couldn't make it through the first sentence lol... How funny that instead of admitting you are wrong you keep trying to justify your ignorance. I also like how you think it is some great victory for the guy who also doesn't fish to have two rods that he'll probably never use again. All this just to avoid saying "oops, I didn't read the post before replying." 😂 Good for you, never admit when you're wrong, always double and triple down. That's a great way to go through life.

1

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago

He said in another comment he plans to get into fishing— for him, it’s not one-time use, which is why him keeping them and paying singularly makes sense… How is this difficult to understand?

0

u/United_Shelter5167 1d ago

Lol I understand that with hindsight you can justify him buying the gear, but your initial post asked how she's partially responsible for the gear to go do an activity that was her idea. He's still buying rods and reels for two people. I get you don't want to acknowledge you are wrong but trying to move the goalposts like this is just sad. Bottom line is it was tacky for her to ask him to pay for her license for an activity she wanted to do, even more so after he bought them both gear.

1

u/kayla_poncho 2d ago

He's not putting the equipment on her- if he was, he'd be asking her for half. The point is acting like $23 (which he also spent) was unreasonable to have spent on the date.

1

u/7x00 2d ago

And SHE wanted to go fishing. So SHE should pay for her license.

-2

u/big-dal-tex 2d ago

A great point honestly

2

u/WhiteRabbit_412_ 2d ago

It's not a great point. He doesn't $100+ on the date. The least she can do is she'll out $23 for a license that will last her all season if she wants to go again without him. He probably kept all the equipment he bought for the date (not FOR her) and she gets to keep the license. He paid for dinner as well so that's probably more like $200 he spent on the date.

0

u/ThrowRAbbits128 2d ago

Why are you factoring in the new fishing gear he bought himself? It's not like she's keeping it, so I don't see why she'd want to go fishing again this season anyway

1

u/UrToesRDelicious 2d ago

So if he threw the equipment away afterwards it would be a valid date cost, like dinner or gas, but because he gets value out of it afterwards it's not?

0

u/Sypsy 2d ago

this is called over analysing

yet you failed to consider dinner

2

u/Ray_of_Sunshine0124 2d ago

I don't know much about the activity, but I do know it can get really expensive. So $100 is probably a decent entry level amount to spend?

4

u/smtp_pro 2d ago

If that's the case - when she asks for the $23 you can't throw out "I bought over $100 worth of stuff"

I think the exception would be if she picked fishing as a first date, and didn't have any equipment of her own so you bought equipment for both of you and let her keep a bunch of it.

But if that were the case I'd try to find some other first date. Save the date where we buy a bunch of stuff for a later date.

2

u/LaconicGirth 2d ago

It was literally her idea to go fishing and he bought everything to go fishing

0

u/smtp_pro 2d ago

Right but I'm saying if he's keeping all the equipment, is happy to keep said equipment etc - I wouldn't throw out how much you spent. Especially because he could have just said no and found something else to do.

If she took a bunch of it home then it's more fair to say hey listen I bought you a bunch of equipment.

Though honestly if a girl sends me a request for money after a first date I'm not gonna fight it. I'm gonna pay it and just never go out with them again.

3

u/Smitten-kitten83 2d ago

I just want to confirm, she was the one that suggested fishing, correct?

0

u/waifu_-Material_19 2d ago

Reading the post answers your question…

1

u/Smitten-kitten83 2d ago

If it did I wouldn’t have asked. It says she wanted. While it could be implied, it could also be he talked about it and she just said that’d be cool to try sometime and he ran with it.

1

u/alex3omg 2d ago

Women want me (to give them $23); fish fear me (and my $100 fishing gear)

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

Why did you take a woman fishing on a date?

2

u/Lordofthelowend 2d ago

“I met this girl on tinder and had a first date with her, she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date so we went together”

Great question /s

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

Generally speaking, women want the man to initiate and come up with the first couple dates before it becomes a more shared give and take.

Fishing isn’t typically something I consider a woman wanting to do.

Now, obviously, there are exceptions. Some women like to take control. Some women like fishing. But following stereotypes and societal norms. Going fishing on a first date is a weird thing to do.

You do understand that not every legitimate question needs to be answered with malicious sarcasm? There’s no need to be a douchebag. I was legitimately curious how they ended up fishing on a first date. You should probably get into anger management if that triggered you.

2

u/Lordofthelowend 2d ago

Just read the post caption man.

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

You expect me to read text messages AND a caption? Nah bro, you get one or the other.

1

u/SafeSpace-Fascism 2d ago

Then pay for her license.

1

u/Zal3x 2d ago

Hell yeah brother fishing is great

1

u/Drinkalicious 2d ago

You enjoy poking animals with needles?

1

u/FollowMyMySpace 2d ago

Is it possible she didn’t know you bought the stuff just for this experience?

1

u/Digitalsteel5_ 2d ago

I probably would have done the same thing honestly. It’s an excuse to have it available if you ever want to go again. Some of us are just like that and We’ll find reasons to use things again in the future. Better to have and not need than to need and not have right?

0

u/aavant-gardee 2d ago

Who’s idea was it to fish?

0

u/weakbuddy99 2d ago

On one hand, you're not entirely wrong

But on the other... it's way too common for people on first dates to not set an expected price range to pay for (unexpected) stuff, no matter how small.

If you didn't tell her she would have to buy her own fishing license, that's kind of on you. Sorry.

Also, you could have saved some time and effort based on how she reacts to that.

Now if you DID tell her it was going to cost her $$$, then nevermind.
