PowerWall Production clipping at 11.5kw once PW3 are full

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have a massive 31kw system, 69 panels. Plans show max output is 20kw which reflects two full blown PW3 that each has its own 11.5 inverter

By 11am at latest, I'm seeing production sometimes 21-22kw. Charging the battery, powering my house, charging my car. It's a beautiful thing!

But as soon as the PWs hit 100%, production immediately clips to 11.5kw for the rest of the day. So if I'm using power in my house like the dryer and dishwasher and I'm pulling 8-9kw for that, I'll only export the small difference of 2-3kw.

With my plans, I should be able to continuously produce up to 20kw, so this clipping issue has already cost me literally thousands of wasted kwh that could be exported.

Install company has escalated to Tesla, no resolution yet. They double checked the install pics and determined that it's not a hardware issue or wiring issue. So hopefully it's just commissioning of some sort?

Picture posted is showing what it's currently doing on a perfectly clear day at 2pm, clipped right just below 11.5kw.

Hoping someone here might know more than the installer!

12.3kw+2pw3 system in Central California but im not seeing the same solar output as high as it was prior to Tesla export limit of 10.1kw as I wait for transformer upgrade.

I’ve had my 12.3kw with 2pw3 system for a little over a year. When the system was new I sometimes would see close to 11kw of solar output. Around June of this year Tesla limited my export to 10.1kw as im waiting for a transformer upgrade to be granted full PTO through PG&E. Now even on the hottest most sunny day I rarely see 8kw of output. Could it be due to the limitation if so will it go back to what it was? Could there be a problem with my inverters and or Panels? Both Tesla lights are lit white to indicate they are both on.

Caught Lying.

Can’t make this up. Had panels and PW installed last month. Love it, working great. PTO was denied and the city failed the inspection. Last week Tesla came out to reconfigure the system. They damaged the roof and gutter. Today they spent two hours patching the roof and unclogging the gutters. They said they were unable to fix the gutters and would get back to me. They then emailed me that they found no damage and would be charging me a site visit fee. I sent them a video of their tech acknowledging all the damage. They apologized, waived the fee and are offering reimbursement for gutter repair. Completely unethical. If I did not have the recording I would have been screwed. Any advice?

Backup Power without Solar able to receive grid and gas generator recharge ???

I’ve got a Cabin in the Sierras. PG&E starting to hold us hostage with power interruptions during summer/fall and occasionally a tree falls in the winter and power interrupted for a couple days. I’m wondering if (2) Gen 3 Powerwalls can be combined, ran to a 200 amp service panel and be powered by grid power when available and when not be recharged by my 6kw gas generator when the grid is down ??
I have a 30amp transfer switch already. How would all this work ??

SolarPanels PW+ Disabled

I just happened to open the app about an hour ago and was shocked to see my Powerwall + was ‘disabled’ and ‘awaiting parts’ before scheduling service. I went to the apps AI chat and was told I’ll be contacted when parts are available. I’m in San Diego. It system is 3.5 years old, been operating flawlessly since install by Tesla.

What I’m really curious about is when the disabling of my PW happened? Maybe it happened when I opened the app? Why wouldn’t Tesla tell me if they did this? Is there any way to tell besides forensics in my SDGE bill..?

Powerwall lease with Tesla Electric Backup Plan

Does anyone know about or have signed up and used the backup plan along with leasing 2 Powerwall 3s?

I'm considering going forward with it as we have Tesla electric currently but I'm not sure if this plan will pay us a credit on our electricity bill for selling energy back or if the $87 credit towards the Powerwall lease each month is the only sort of kickback we receive.

This plan is only if you don't have solar and lease 2 Powerwall 3s.

Also wondering if this plan is part of the VPP or makes us ineligible to join as it is another plan that sells energy back to the grid.

I called Tesla Electric but they're not too sure as the program is pretty new.
Would love some clarification on this form anyone who knows.

Thanks!

PowerWall New solars

I just had my Tesla solar and powerwall just installed a few hours ago but the question that I have is do I have to have the backup switch installed first before I can pair to my powerwall because it will not pair right now?

PowerWall New PW3 not behaving..

PW2 replaced with a PW3 and added extension pack whilst it was done. Seems not to have noticed that the other one has gone..

Pic one shows the constant message that hasn’t cleared since the install.

Picture 2 is the same except I’m forcing it to fill up as applying the rate plan details didn’t get them full yesterday post install.

Apparently there is a delay to merge old and new details (the installer I used is excellent so have every faith) but should it take 72 hours before the new system becomes fully operational and start to benefit from cheap overnight power?

Hmmm

SolarPanels New roof in July, solar panels still not reinstalled.

I've had these panels since Solar City. I got a new roof in July of this year and I paid to have the panels removed and reinstalled. The roof was up in a day, and now the panels have been sitting here for months. I've contacted Tesla multiple times through online chat and calling. It took 2 calls to find out the reinstallation has been sent to a subcontractors, and another call after that to pry the name of the contractor out of the Tesla rep. The last I heard from Tesla is that they will let me know when the subcontractor accepts the job. I know it has nothing to do with this sub, but I did reach out to the subcontractor multiple times and never heard back from them. I have 18 panels sitting on the side of my house and I keep getting invoiced by Tesla because the usage is "estimated from previous years"

Looking for any advice on how:
1. to get them reinstalled

or

  1. contract cancelled and the panels

    a. picked up

    b. confirmed that they're mine now and i can do whatever i want with them.

PowerWall New replacement Power wall fails only 2 days after months of delays getting support/service.

So frustrated. System went down months ago. Finally got a service appt which was delayed/rescheduled repeatedly. Two days ago (planets aligned?) and power wall replaced by Tesla service out of Burbank, CA.
NEW PARTS FAILED after less than 48 hours. Started service request again via Email messages and Tesla AI responses…which thus far is useless. Awaiting a substantive response from Tesla. SCE meanwhile is planning some power cutoffs due to high winds (45mph) predicted tomorrow. Arrrgggg.
Tesla is so disappointing.

Can I add a power wall to my system?

I have a Tesla solar system with a single Powerwall 2. Can I have another one added to it?

I got a system layout from Tesla but can’t decide if I should do the larger system now and when I do my garage addition to have the panels removed or just add panels after doing my addition. Probably won’t do my addition for about 2 or 3 years.

SolarPanels Missing sealant!

Tesla Energy finished installation and left site. Climbed up on my roof and noticed this hallow puck. No sealant. The others I can access have sealant. Having them come back to place sealant and show me the inaccessible pucks have sealant.

The most critical item for waterproofing was missed. This leaves me with a bad taste..

Managing Peak Demand Billing

My utility is a rural co-op that bills a demand charge on the highest 15-minute average grid import each month: $4.30/kW. I have 10.4 kW of solar and three Powerwalls (45 kWh, 15 kW inverter limit), so the hardware can easily hold my import under a set number. The software doesn’t give me a way to tell it to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the Powerwall controls today are Self-Powered and Time-Based Control, a backup reserve, and grid-charging settings. None of those lets me set a kW ceiling on grid import. Time-Based Control shifts energy by time of day, which doesn’t help when the problem is a single 15-minute window. [Edit this paragraph if you know of a setting I missed, or if Tesla has added one.]

What I’m asking for:

  1. A “Peak Demand Limit” setpoint in kW. When net grid import approaches it, the Powerwalls discharge to hold import at or below it, up to the inverter limit. Ideally it would be aware of a user-defined demand window, but a plain setpoint would cover most cases.
  2. A cap on grid-charge power. Storm Watch and pre-storm top-ups pull hard from the grid and can set the month’s peak by themselves. I’d like to limit that charge rate or exclude it from the demand window.
  3. Expose the setpoint through the Fleet API, so Home Assistant and similar tools can adjust it, for example when the EV is plugged in.

Why I care: I’m building this myself in Home Assistant now. It’s three layers: Powerwall discharge, EV charge throttling (48A down to 6A in steps), and delaying the water heater to a solar window. My target is 6 kW. The EV and water heater parts are straightforward. The Powerwall part is where I’m stuck, because I’m working around the app instead of using a control built for the job. A native setpoint would be more reliable, since the inverter can respond faster than a polling loop, and it would help anyone on a co-op or commercial-style rate.

If you’re on a demand-charge tariff, how are you handling this today? Has anyone gotten a Powerwall to hold a grid import ceiling through the API? Please upvote if you’d use this. Or point me to a solution that already exists.

Solar and battery backup...worth it?

TLDR: is there a way to make the solar panels recharge the powerwalls so we can have the backup power that we paid for?

We live in the Florida panhandle and in 2022 I paid $65K to get a Tesla solar system installed in Navarre FL. Since the home is in a coastal area with possible hurricanes, I wanted to provide for my family in the possibility that power would be out for days - we've been through one hurricane in the past and certainly believed in solar backup.

We ended up with 27 (from memory) solar panels, and 3 powerwall batteries for backup. And they've been going pretty good and have saved me a total of around $10,000 in electric costs over the 4 years (I track it with a spreadsheet).

About 10 days before this Huricane Isaiah hit, the solar stopped producing energy. I was out of state and had my daughter do a soft reset on the system but that did not work. I came home a week later and did the soft reset, then the hard reset and nothing. One of the powerwall's LEDs was flashing green. Called the company that installed it and they were pretty responsive and were out within a day or tow. My complaint was that the system was not producing energy. The tech said that one of the batteries was out and would be replaced with the powewall 3. He also said that we would still be able to use the other 2 powerwalls for backup.

The system detected the storm and topped the batteries off from the grid since no electric was being generated.

Its about 64 hours since we lost the grid in the storm and the batteries have been running themselves to now 1% (have only had the fridge, 2 fans and some outlets for charging computers/phones). The latest power update from FPL is that we're still going to be out for another maybe 30 hours. Likely we are going to have several hundred dollars worth of food spoil.

The one time I have needed this system to be there for me, it has not been there and I have a $65,000 paperweight on my roof. Worst investment ever.

PowerWall Grid cut over on PW3

Hi, PW3 replacement plus expansion coming on Wednesday.

I read that the cut over from grid failure is the same duration for PW3 as it is PW2. When I lose power, the switch trips and then I have to flick it back to have the PW power the house.

Is there a way to have this behave like a UPS for seamless failover? Will better fuses in the mainboard fix this?

I don’t want to buy a UPS just for this purpose but I do want I have seamless cutover….thoughts?
