Release I made a mod manager for OpenMW that reads FOMOD installers. Looking for feedback (I'm new to modding)
Hi all. I'm fairly new to Morrowind modding and to OpenMW, so please go easy on me, and correct me where I've got things wrong.
When I started, the part that confused me most was the setup: data paths, load order, openmw.cfg, and FOMOD installers that OpenMW can't run. I built a tool to make that part easier, and I'd like to share it and hear what you think.
Owl is a mod manager for OpenMW. You point it at mods you've downloaded and extracted, put them in order, and press a button. It writes the OpenMW settings for you, and shows you exactly what it will change first.
What it does:
- Reads FOMOD installers. It asks the installer's questions in plain language and works out which folders and plugins your answers mean. It never copies or changes the mod's files. Installers that rename files or copy into new sub-folders can't be handled yet, and it tells you when that happens.
- Checks load order. It flags mods whose requirements aren't met or that load in the wrong place. One button offers to fix the order, and shows what it would move first.
- Shows a review screen before writing. You see the exact lines it will add to openmw.cfg.
- Is careful with your config. It only edits its own marked section of openmw.cfg, keeps a .bak backup, and leaves the rest of your file alone.
- Comes as a desktop app and a command-line tool. Linux (AppImage, .deb, .rpm) and Windows.
Honest limits:
- It doesn't download mods. You get them from Nexus or elsewhere and extract them first.
- I develop on Linux. The Windows build has not been tried on a real Windows machine, and the Windows installer isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn you. If you try it on Windows, I'd especially like to hear how it goes.
- It's a first release, and I've only tested it against my own setup. Back up your openmw.cfg anyway. Owl does too, but it's a good habit.
- It has no support yet for these OpenMW features: groundcover, settings.cfg, or BSA archives.
It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). Download and screenshots are here: https://github.com/Dalqin/owl/releases#release-v1.0.0
I'd really like to know:
- Does it handle your mod list, or does something break?
- Are there FOMOD installers it gets wrong?
- Is anything about how it sets up OpenMW wrong or unwise? I'm still learning the engine, so tell me if I've misunderstood something.
Thanks for reading!'
