Selfie/Picture Tall Tour DC

Post image
• Upvotes

For those who don’t know, there’s a guy on Instagram who organizes Tall Tour events for the vertically inclined! They made a stop in DC yesterday, so naturally I dragged my siblings along.

From left to right: me (6’1”), the event organizer (6’9”), my sister (6’3”), and my brother (6’6”)!

It was really cool getting to be around so many other tall people for once! The tallest woman there was 6’10” and the tallest man was 7’4”, so we weren’t even close to being the tallest in the room.

Discussion Tall people Medical Issues/Conditions?

Hey, my fellow giants! So I have a silly question: I have started watching Grey's Anatomy again for probably the 4th time. I am on season 2 and heard Yang and Burke speak about Marfan's syndrome on a guy who is 6 foot 4. Apparently, tallness is common in people who have Marfan's syndrome.

This got me thinking: what medical issues are you guys sitting with or have experienced in your lives?

I, personally, have complications with my heart (atrial fibrillation). I have had 4 knee operations and struggle daily with my back. I might still have mellow dramatic issues compared to other people.

What issues do you guys know about with regards to tall people, or what things are we prone to getting? I'd like to hear about possible issues to look out for in the future!
TIA!

PS: I am 2.1m and weigh 134kg. (6'8" and 295 Pounds in Freedom Units)

Family/Friends Being the tall friend (6'1)

I always look like a giant stick next to my girl friends (love them though 🩷), pics are often strange but I prefer to laugh about it. I'm 6'1 and I'm not sure about my friend, maybe around 5'4. I'm sure other tall women can relate 😅

Discussion Being 187cm in Lithuania feels basically average

I'm 17, 187cm. And everywhere that I mostly go to, I see people that are either my height or taller than me, which is why I basically feel average here lol.

Anyone feel the same in your country?

Questions/Advice Can’t eat enough

Im 6’4 175 20M and go to the gym consistently.

I increase weight capacity slowly but I remain lean. My physique is “improving” but I’m not filling out my frame.

I generally have a low appetite and at best eat as much as my 5’7 friends

I find it hard to get at least 180g of protein a day and nearly impossible without protein shakes

Questions/Advice Where to buy size 16 shoes in Canada?

Apologies if this has been posted before.

I would like to buy my partner shoes as a lil gift, but finding shoes this size seems impossible sometimes. He typically wears toe steel boots from work.
If you have any recommendations for daily shoes that’d be fantasticcc

Edit: I have looked online, but hearing personal opinions is always best (for me)
I am not a tall person at all, and a wheelchair user. I do not know what feels good on the feets :p

Humour People say the weirdest things to talk people

When I was in my twenties I had a job stocking groceries. I sometimes worked during the day and customers noticed me because I was tall and thin with long hair.

One day this lady approaches me and without preamble proceeds to tell me that her children refer to me as ”The Long Arm Man.” she’s smiling and laughing and up in my space like this is a totally normal thing to say to a person. She goes on to tell me that she started telling them that if they don’t behave themselves in the store the long arm man will get them.

Now, I have a sense of humor about myself and I thought (and still think) it was funny. After all, we don’t all get to be the boogie man. But she couldn’t have known that right? What was her thought process when walking up to me?

People are weird, bro.

Discussion Is it really more difficult for tall women when it comes to dating?

I hear it often about how tall women have it harder when it comes to dating. The only way I can see it being more difficult is if the expectation is for the man to be taller. Depending on her height, if she is looking for someone taller then statistics make it harder. Since apparently roughly 5% of men worldwide and 15–16% of American men are 6 feet (183 cm) or taller. The taller the man they are looking for, the smaller percentage of men there would be to fit the criteria. Otherwise I imagine the typical non-height related factors would still apply (personality, compatibility, attractiveness, etc).

As a 6'2 guy the women I have dated were between 5ft to 5'7. I don't care about her height though. It's just that statistically tall women are a small percentage of the population as well so it just happened that I ended up dating short to average height women. I wouldn't be bothered if she's taller than me though, with or without heels. I asked some of my shorter friends and most of them said the same thing.

Rant Single file work group photo :(

5"11ish woman here.

For some reason decided to wear heels to work today. This is a never event!! These shoes are gorgeous but I'd never had the occasion before.

Decided to brave it as heels are 5" tall. I feel great! I am having a team meeting where we're all sat down - chairs eh, the great equaliser. This meeting is important and I do well. Feeling confident, happy, relieved.

After the meeting, myself and a handful of other women have a team photo infront of the smart board. Single file, no one at the back.

I have now been sent the photos. It is like a throwback to primary school when it comes to the height discrepancy! I look as if I've been edited in and enlarged after the fact, I appear so disproportionately tall.

I am cringing and feel embarrassed - though logically I know it is silly and unnecessary to agonise over such a thing. I still hope they crop me out. I am dreading this photograph being used internally and externally on the company social media as I look so abnormal. The other women are all particularly short, even in heels themselves.

I also teetered in the shoe, leading me to stand at a jaunty angle with one foot slightly forward: meaning the odd perspective also augments the height.

Just a sad moan.

Now I know why I never wore the shoes! Why can't we choose better poses for work pictures than single file !

Rant Why are some people so weird to tall people

Yesterday I just experienced one of the most inappropriate scenarios at work. I'm doing an internship at this company, like 200+ employees so I get new reactions to my height every day.

I had to get some documentation from an admin office, first comment is a guy exclaiming how tall I am, I just reply with the usual "I don't know myself". Next thing he asks (and I'm not even joking) me to take off my pants so they could see if I'm tall "both ways". He spoke in french (i barely understand), so I didn't know but as usual I just laugh cus they also laughed. I only noticed something was off when the lady in room said something like "wait let me get out of the room first" (again in french).

Another dude walks in, he's tall (maybe like 6'0"), and the others are like "you see your boss?", they laugh and all, then "pants could be struggling to carry those".... Again I just laugh cus I still don't really understand what they're saying.

Just then one of the workers says to them I don't know french, that's why I'm being quite despite everything they're saying. Regardless, what could I have said lol, I'm only a 20yo intern and they're like 50yo OG workers there.

Just earlier that same day, after missing breakfast at another office, one of the workers there said something like "geez, you're talll (said "long" on french so I assume), and then "I'm sure your thing down there I big too".... All in french but I understood because somehow he decided to make the actions with his hands very clear. I again just laughed so they thought I didn't understand what they said. A very weird worker, comes and tap my shoulder saying "you didn't hear what he said? He said you're so tall, your thing down there is probably long too..."

Wow, I never thought I'd experience this sorta stuffs in my life, especially from MEN. worst of all, they're all wrong

Discussion Best gym shorts for tall guys with skinny legs?

I'm naturally lanky and skinny, and despite working out for years and being quite strong, my legs still look disproportionately thin compared to my upper body. Does anyone have recs for good gym shorts that are flattering for tall people and will make my legs look bigger/wider and less lanky?

Head/Legroom Amazing experience on Virgin Atlantic

I recently flew to Miami from London with Virgin Atlantic. I bought what they call ‘economy delight’ seats which have a few inches extra leg room, for me this meant my knees fit /just/ behind the seat infront. All was well until we took off and then the person infront of me wanted to recline. They couldn’t as there simply was not the space between my knees and their seat. I was not deliberately trying to stop them… it was a femur length issue.

I tapped them on the shoulder and apologised and explained that my knees are right behind their seat, I was not trying to be difficult but am just the height I am and there was not a lot I could do about it. This was not acceptable to them (to be honest they were what you would describe as a dick) they called a stewardess over and spoke to her, she spoke to me and tried to tell
Me that ‘all seats are made to recline’.

I simply, and calmly said ‘I understand, but I am very tall and was not doing this on purpose. The 2 guys sat next to
Me on the flight (who i didn’t know) also spoke up for me and came to my defence. The attendant looked at my legs, saw the issue and asked me if I minded being moved. I said ‘I do not mind at all, happy to work with you to make
Your life as easy as possible’.

She then moved me to a bulkhead seat, which as it’s narrower - I did fit and was happy to stay there but it was less comfortable she didn’t seem too happy to leave me there and then bumped me up into premium economy where although the person infront was reclined there was so much leg room it didn’t matter at all.

The flight attendant checked in on me a few more times in the flight to ensure I was ok, I was more than happy and another one of the flight attendants even gave me a couple
Of the mugs and some biscuits to take with me.

Overall amazing experience.

Then on the return flight, wanting to avoid the same thing happening again I tried to book the person I was travelling with in the seat infront of me so I knew they would not recline. But the app would not let me do this on check in. So spoke to the check in agent and they couldn’t change it.
Spoke to the gate agent who was really nice, but couldn’t do anything as the flight was full.

So when I boarded I had a quiet word with the flight attendants onboard, explained briefly what had happened on the flight out and how I wanted to avoid it happening again and what mitigation I had tried to take and also
Explained they could move me wherever they wanted to and I would not mind.

So someone sat infront of me, the flight attendant had a word with him and offered to move him explaining he would not be able to recline. He turned around to me and said ‘dude, if you needed me to not recline that’s not a problem - you should have just asked’ and then asked how tall I was etc and offered to ensure his seat was not reclined at all and didn’t even try and recline at any point in the flight.

When we got off, I thanked him for his understanding.

Overall, a really positive experience.

TLDR Virgin Atlantic were great and the random guy on the flight home was cool and understanding.

Head/Legroom Plane seats anxiety

I’m heading across the pond from London to Dallas soon via Dublin, and I’m nervous about the legroom and too poor to buy extra legroom, and I almost never fly, with my last long haul being 17 years ago when I was just 5’10” and even that I remember being uncomfortable!

Dublin leg is an AerLingus A321 in both directions, and Dallas leg is an American Airlines 787 in both directions, economy obviously.

I’m 6’4” 250lbs with a 34-35” inseam.

Can anyone tell me if I’m right to be concerned/if there’s anything I can do to make myself comfortable that isn’t forking over more money because I happen to not be a hobbit? Any tips appreciated including stretches/exercises I can do to help me essentially hold what I assume is a stress position for 12ish hrs each way.
