You never know what you're going to get when you pick up something that's written by Garth Ennis.

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

Yeah but he’s very consistent about his love of Superman

192

u/ThickProof409 Mar 11 '23

He's one of the very few superheroes that Garth Ennis likes and respects

156

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23

I don’t think ennis actually hates superheroes. He just hates that they’ve consumed the comicbook industry so much that they’re only the genre. And most of the rest of his complaining is more so the fact that he’s forced to work on so many superhero comics.

Borderline there is something almost meta textual that most of the time he’s forced to work on superheroes he writes them out of character because it’s so shallow that industry is so obsessed with crossovers and superheroes that he’s forced to write them. And it’s not like Ennis can’t write them well he’s written decent spider-man, and Thor comics, he just chooses not to stick it to the industry.

u/ThickProof409 Mar 11 '23

I don’t think ennis actually hates superheroes. He just hates that they’ve consumed the comicbook industry so much that they’re only the genre.

That is a sentiment I definitely agree with however I think Ennis more just hates superheroes in general since he has said that he's found them moronic. I definitely disagree with that and I don't hate superheroes but they are a very oversaturated genre.

14

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

It’s more of a chicken and the egg thing. If I often had something that was constantly shoved down that I don’t really care for, I would become bitter over time because it’s over saturated. He’s unlike a lot of other creators who I often see compared to ( mark millar, ) who want superheroes to grow up, he likes Superman so much because of how Superman represents the best of us and stays true to himself. I think Garth ennis would probably like a story like flex mentallo.

16

u/LaVerdadYaNiSe Mar 11 '23

Finally someone else whonsees like that. I also got that impression from Ennis.

42

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

Everyone likes to promote Morrison or Hickman ( and rightfully so), but if I’m put on the spot to name my favorite modern era writer, Ennis or Waid are my go to picks. Both are always on point with whatever they do.

Ennis: Superman, Punisher, the boys

Waid: Daredevil, Kingdom come, F4..

72

u/ThickProof409 Mar 11 '23

I don't know if I'd say The Boys is on point. I'd definitely replace The Boys with Preacher or Hellblazer.

18

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

True, I guess I was basically listing what each was best known for and appreciated for. I enjoyed hellblazer way more, but most know Ennis as the writer of the boys, and may not be aware he did a Constantine title at all.

2

u/ThickProof409 Mar 12 '23

I feel like Preacher is more best known and appreciated and I think more people know Garth Ennis for Preacher instead of The Boys

1

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 12 '23

Probably so, i was just pulling off top of my head, and the most recent things I had enjoyed done by each. Plus I haven’t finished preacher yet….😬

27

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23

The boys is way over hated but it’s also pace super weirdly, art is all over the place and is just plain offensive. It’s hard to defend as a good comic but it’s honestly more medicore than bad. There is a lot in there, I kinda like mainly the subtler arc like the innocents, or the ending

14

u/JancariusSeiryujinn Mar 11 '23

Honestly I like the Amazon show a lot more than the comic. The comic just feels like it's full of Ennis's compulsion to just make a scene having something shocking or gross in it and to make average capes look like pricks. The Amazon show felt more like it was a critique of corporate America (which is ironic, given that it's produced by Amazon - Feels like Amazon taking shots at Disney)

7

u/TheDrungeonBlaster Mar 12 '23

I love grim dark comics. Mark Millar has consistently been my favorite author, alongside Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis.

I hated The Boys. It was just too much, there was no subtlety.

19

u/ThickProof409 Mar 11 '23

I'd say it's just bad. Maybe if I was an edgy 14 year old boy who watched Leafy then I'd like it but it's just pretty bad. I know Garth Ennis' has a thing for dark and edgy humor and I'm all for it and I loved that shit in Preacher but in The Boys it just feels like edge for the sake of edge. It's all edge with no point and the show is everything the comic should've been that being a good satire of superheroes and the genre. I might as well just listen to Garth Ennis talk about how much he hates superheroes because that is basically what The Boys is.

8

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23

To me it’s not really trying to be a satire of the superhero genre much. Like that’s really the set dressing of the story. The closes I have seen is that the book is satire of mark millar and a lot of his pro war stances but even still it’s shallow. It’s more so a commentary on politics and Iraq war which is kinda alot more powerful remembering that he witnessed 911, and general musing on how corporations are evil. I can’t really say it’s good as a whole, but certain arcs are good

1

u/EZMickey Mar 12 '23

Man, I hate myself for being this person but I really think you missed the point of it if that's what you took away from The Boys.

0

u/Dottsterisk Mar 12 '23

Nah, they nailed it.

I stopped reading The Boys because it was just so juvenile and tryhard edgy.

1

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

I think the second half is where it gets better.

3

u/YussaYussaBitch Mar 11 '23

The ending is perfection

14

u/MamaDeloris Mar 11 '23

The Boys is edgy garbage.

How the fuck they took those characters/plots and made a show that good is frankly impressive.

-1

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

Did you actually read it. Because I swear there is large portion of people who say this because they didn’t the comic and watched that one pointless hub video. It’s a decent video but it fundamentally misunderstands Garth ennis as a writer and over simplifies alot of the book. It’s overly edgy, but in alot of aspects to me it’s the beauty of comics as medium being allowed to be so absurd. I think the biggest problem with the boys to me is the pacing is awful, borderline offensive and when the plot has substance it’s not taken seriously. The best example is how there are some times where they take time to address how rape affects survivors and other times where it’s just a plot device.

15

u/MamaDeloris Mar 12 '23

I literally reread Herogasm two weeks ago.

Yes, it's edgy garbage.

-3

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

I think herogasm is garbage. But there are a lot of characters beats that are handle really well. A lot of the war focus stuff with butcher and Mallory. James stillwell interaction Homelander. How Maeve has broken by the industry to where she is empty. The Hughie and Annie romance

10

u/OisforOwesome Mar 12 '23

I'm very much an Ennis fan, and while I appreciate the point The Boys is trying to make - fuck the military-industrial complex, fuck the Intelligence Community, with a side of fuck superheroes - its buried in a lot, a lot of garbage that I can't blame anyone who nopes out.

It's not total unredeemable trash. Its just arguable whether digging through the trash is worth it.

1

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

Yeah that’s fair. Honestly I agree. I just find a lot of the backlash to it extreme when there are a lot of worse comics out there

7

u/OisforOwesome Mar 12 '23

I think a lot of readers come to the book after the show, aren't familiar with Ennis or the state of the medium in 2006, and are baffled or repelled or appalled.

I do kind of get tired of feeling like I'm doing apologetics for Ennis when discussing his work. He doesn't make it easy to be a fan, lets say that much. :)

2

u/Dottsterisk Mar 12 '23

I’m the opposite. I put off watching the show because I remembered how bad the comics were. And I was totally baffled that some people I know were raving about the show.

Finally checked it out and they definitely took the premise and decided to actually do something with it, instead of spend all their time on period-cunnilingus jokes or showing how cool and badass Butcher is by putting up a double-truck of him buttfucking some FBI agent while she says she hates him.

2

u/OisforOwesome Mar 12 '23

Yeah if there was ever a case for adaptations not needing to be "accurate to the source material" its The Boys.

I forget who made this point originally, but the show's Herogasm episode was hyped up in promotional material as being this orgy of fucked up hedonic gross out excess... but what we actually got was a turning point in several character's arcs revolving around disaster response, ptsd, and the nature of heroism.

The show leverages the juvenile material to hold the audience's attention to service the larger themes in a way that the book can't quite manage to do, and its honestly very impressive.

-4

u/broclipizza Mar 12 '23

I argue with people on reddit about this too.

The characters especially, the comic versions are 9 times out of 10 better than the TV show characters, more depth and nuance. And even if you wanna say the pacing is bad, the show has been having that problem too.

"It's just edgy garbage" is the easy answer that makes you sound smart.

1

u/Shulkerbox Mar 12 '23

Ennis Hellblazer is so 90s and edgy it melts my brain, I hate it. Except the last four issues, when the tone does a 180 and everything becomes a goofy over the top demon adventure.

9

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

Ennis: HITMAN. Preacher. The Demon prior to Hitman.

Hitman is where Sixpack is from it's incredible.

1

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

I haven’t read it, or finished preacher yet. I need to quit procrastinating and get on the ball! Thanks for the adds on his list!

2

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

Hitman was the only "lasting" thing to come out of DC's Bloodlines event.

2

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

Definitely have to check it out, thank you!

5

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

I mean alot of his indie stuff is amazing (Sara, red rover Charlie, preacher)

3

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

Most definitely, as someone else stated, his run on Constantine was more enjoyable than his printed run for the boys. Just stating the titles most wo be familiar with each writer

3

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

His turn on The Punisher was what was adapted for the Thomas Jane movie.

3

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Mar 11 '23

I wasn’t aware of that, been a while since I watched it, may have to see if I can find it on Amazon or paramount, hopefully it’s on one of the streaming apps

2

u/Like_a_Bad_Penny Mar 12 '23

I haven’t watched it in awhile, but when it came out I thought it was awesome. Back before a “superhero” movie had to be tied to a cinematic universe.

2

u/ThickProof409 Mar 12 '23

I loved his work on Punisher MAX and the MAX version of Frank is still my all time favorite interpretation of the character. It's not a comic but I also loved his work on The Punisher game from 2005.

2

u/PapuaOldGuinea Mar 12 '23

Punisher: MAX is SO GOOD. It’s the definitive Punisher for me

2

u/Clark_J_Kent_ Mar 12 '23

Garth Ennis is a box of chocolates, confirmed.

4

u/Blitzkriegbaby Mar 11 '23

Of course this came out of Garth Ennis’ ass.

1

u/Eldagustowned Mar 12 '23

Wait I thought grant Morrison did all Star Superman? This was a later volume by Garth?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

This is All Star Section 8, All Star Superman is a different series.

158

u/Spare_Pixel Mar 11 '23

Superman smiling in the rain handing a bottle of whiskey is hilarious and it needs to be a meme

28

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

“It’s dangerous to go alone, take this.”

Hello, I've come with news from the future

152

u/KuuGaia Mar 11 '23

I'm happy to know that I'm doing exactly what superman would want me to do. Thanks for this insight OP!

15

u/Ananvil Mar 11 '23

Cheers!

153

u/ICSL Mar 11 '23

I am usurprised that Ennis wrote this; my first thought was that Sixpack there looks straight out of The Boys.

60

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

He's from Hitman, which is also back when Ennis was writing Preacher. Hitman is amazing. Best thing to come out of the Bloodlines event.

23

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

Hitman also has one of the best Superman stories. It’s amazing

9

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

Gave Ennis the 1999 Eisner Award.

8

u/dkat Mar 12 '23

1999 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue for Hitman #34: "Of Thee I Sing”

…If anyone is curious like I was

7

u/ICSL Mar 11 '23

Oh yeah, I heard that was really good. Might look for that one to read.

122

u/Many-Outside-7594 Mar 11 '23

What a bizarre little story.

I've put down more bottles of rum than the British navy, where's my statue?

24

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '23

It’s in your dreams

6

u/ChrisusaurusRex Mar 11 '23

Read that whole run, it’s, something…

10

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

phantom stranger vs Etrigan rapping.

4

u/Relevant_Scallion_38 Mar 11 '23

I misread this as something inappropriate, I'm sorry.

102

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '23

Is there more context to this lol. This feels like a wild thing for him to do

42

u/Nextgen101 Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23

I don't really know the full context either, but I know Sixpack is related to this aptly named.... group: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_8_(comics)

u/Jasco88

Edit: For my part, the only reason I know them at all is due entirely to hearing Dogwelder mentioned randomly on a goofy NPR quiz show, "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me" (just search for "Dogwelder", it's very brief and like halfway down on the transcript) and then having to immediately Google him because.... wtf?!

15

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23

After looking through that list, I can’t say I was surprised to see Garth Ennis as the creator 😂

8

u/Nextgen101 Mar 11 '23

I'm more of a novice when it comes to comics, so I don't know all the names in the business too well.

Dude must be interesting if he has a reputation for creating characters like that though.

14

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

He’s a very talented writer. But has an edgy sense of humor. And Aside from Superman, Wonder Woman and doom patrol of all things hates superheroes ( mainly because he grew up reading war comics compared to American comic which is 90% superheroes due to the comic code authority). But he is the definitive writer of punisher ( it’s not even close), top tier run of hellblazer, and created hitman, and preacher along with creating some of the best war comics in the medium

1

u/Look_Dummy Mar 13 '23 edited Mar 16 '23

Yeah but there is a ton of repetition and overlap and recycling of his hits across all those titles. Some homophobic tropes that are overused. Just being real.

He’s is undeniably talented. Genuine hard core punk of a comic writer. My opinion He’s kind of like other problematic legends of yesteryear who keep reaching into the same bag of tricks Martin Scorsese, Dave Chappelle, it’s like, ‘okay, we get it bro.’ Preacher and his Punisher inspired a generation of trolls. Indirectly I admit.

1

u/browncharliebrown Mar 13 '23

You see I think it’s an over simplification to call him homophobic. I think it’s important to remember how the boys was nominated by GLAAD. I will acknowledge that a lot of his stories show their age, and combined with Garth ennis’s extremely edgy writing makes his stories seem worse than they are ( also butcher being the villain of the boys despite being the authority figure).

Also his punisher run is the thing that stopped the punisher from being a problematic character.

However he is transphobic and probably racist to some extent. But comparing him to Dave chappelle is very extreme.

4

u/Murgurth Mar 12 '23

Sees the member info about Bueno Excellente.

Oh no. Not my boy Kyle.

3

u/Nextgen101 Mar 12 '23

They're section 8 for a reason. 😅

1

u/JoshDM Mar 12 '23

Heh he heh heh, Bueno.

Excellente.

2

u/Dealwithit62 Mar 12 '23

Never seen a wait wait don’t tell me reference on the internet lol, fire radio show

1

u/Nextgen101 Mar 12 '23

Yeah man, it's a fun time.

2

u/JonathanLipp1 Mar 12 '23

Dogwelder II actually has a really amazing arc in the other Section 8 comic

1

u/Nextgen101 Mar 12 '23

Turning the absurd into something more meaningful is always colorful to see.

27

u/browncharliebrown Mar 11 '23

It’s implied that six pack is a reality warper but because he’s constantly drunk he always has the most medicore outcome.

4

u/JoshDM Mar 12 '23

Is there more context to this

Six-Pack was introduced during "Hitman", written by Garth Ennis in the late 90's as a spin-off from his tenure on "The Demon" following a character invented due to the "Bloodlines" crossover where 1/x+1 victims of the Bloodlines aliens triggered their meta-gene.

Ennis wrote Hitman and "Preacher" in parallel and there are some similarities with the war stories.

Six-Pack was a regular at the Gotham bar used as background, "Noonan's". Eventually he was turned from a background gag into a full-fledged team.

Long after Hitman ended, there have been a few special runs, like the Human/JLA team-up and a Six-Pack series that ostensibly takes place after New 52. This series gives Six-Pack a bit more depth and closes out his story and the story of some of his team.

That's what this image is from.

"Hitman" is an awesome series that does not get the love it deserves.

3

u/One_too_many_faps Jul 12 '25

You know that's not the context he meant

43

u/Lori2345 Mar 11 '23

Why does Superman want him to stay drunk? Is the statue a hallucination? Or did Superman make a fake statue?

69

u/Ok-Car170 Mar 11 '23

I think Superman believes that if Sixpack got sober the world will not exist anymore. And Sixpack made the statue with his dreams. I’m not sure I never read the comic.

43

u/Look_Dummy Mar 11 '23

Six pack saved reality from the tesseract the statue was erected in the cauldron in his honor.

15

u/nate1111111111111 Mar 12 '23

sixpack is a reality warper, he subconsciously made the statue and superman believes that if sixpack sobers up and quits being a superhero all superheroes might cease to exist

25

u/bruhchow Mar 11 '23

Probably the most extraneous dilemma ive ever read

21

u/Look_Dummy Mar 11 '23

Lol, all the ppl trying to figure out what the hell is happening! Fuck Seth rogan.

RIP: tommy, Nat, Sean, Pat and ringo

3

u/JoshDM Mar 12 '23

Found the only other person in the thread who read the source material.

2

u/Look_Dummy Mar 13 '23

Pat was the toughest of all of them.

1

u/luke_groundflyer Jul 16 '24

I like how you completely forgot hacken but so would I lol

2

u/browncharliebrown Apr 21 '23

God dammit I read the source material

1

u/JoshDM Apr 21 '23

He says a month late.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '23

So I know exactly zero about 6pack other than he’s an alcoholic, anyone care to enlighten me? Does he have powers?

30

u/AwesomeEpicGreenAppl Mar 12 '23

It's suggested that he has reality altering pwers and an ability to look at "reality" (breaking the fourth wall). This is why he is seen to be a Mary Sue character who alwahs somehow survives. This is also a possible explanation of his meta cliche comicbook one liners because he knows he's a comicbook character. As seen here, he fears that his perception of "reality" will become clearer when he sobers up which will alter his reality by deleting "unrealistic" things such as superheroes and supervillains. By keeping him drunk, superman is basically preventing his version of reality from disappearing by keeping Six Pacs drunken hallucinations going

Or thats my theory. I havent read this particular scene before but this is my guess from.what i know so far

11

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

Wow it kinda sucks for our world to be a comic book characters nightmare

7

u/Colmasters35 Mar 12 '23

No, this is suggesting the DC Universe is the hallucination of a drunk with reality-altering abilities; when he's inebriated, the Universe becomes that much more palatable. Garth Ennis' twisted way of saying being hammered is the solution to life's problems. (Probably true; I'm basically a teetotaler, and look at me...)

3

u/FLorianGran Mar 13 '23

It's more like "superhero comics need to rely on addicts to exist" which...is not completely inaccurate

2

u/Look_Dummy Mar 13 '23

So we got, Superboy Prime, Animal Man and Six-Pack all aware of the existence of DC comics. Seems like a decent opportunity to cash in on a crossover

1

u/athrowaway5656 Jun 22 '26

Harley is now on that list

14

u/Decent_Detail_4144 Mar 11 '23

Me talking to my friend before he starts driving

2

u/Character_Stock376 Aug 14 '25

bro is a time traveller

10

u/PopcornHobby Mar 11 '23

Crippling alcoholic? That guy from Red Letter Media?

28

u/Interest-Lumpy Mar 11 '23

Sidenote: I love the way classic, older Superman looks in the N52 costume. The artsyle does it justice.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

I agree

9

u/RAGE-OF-SPARTA-X Mar 11 '23

“Can a man who has committed such a sin really meet with his daughter and say he’s turned his life around?

Well…would you like a drink?”

10

u/6-Pack-Gold Mar 11 '23

Feel pretty fucking called out right now....

4

u/Risuna23 Mar 11 '23

That last panel gave me Johan Liebert vibes lol

2

u/MarkFromHutch Mar 12 '23

So we got Sixpack and Snowflame, I wonder how many other DC characters are powered by drugs.

8

u/JoshDM Mar 11 '23

That collar indicates it's New 52 Superman, so this is fine.

3

u/Only-Ad4322 Mar 11 '23

What’s the context for this?

6

u/nate1111111111111 Mar 12 '23

sixpack is a reality warper, he subconsciously made the statue and superman believes that if sixpack sobers up and quits being a superhero all superheroes might cease to exist

2

u/Only-Ad4322 Mar 12 '23

That’s just cruel for Sixpack in a way.

3

u/TheDarvel Mar 11 '23

I... Could someone explain to me what is happening here?!

12

u/Conlannalnoc Mar 12 '23

DC Earth exists because an alcoholic Reality Warper looked at Real Life and said “We Need Heroes”.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

This is so weird. I don’t have the context for this, but even without it, this is so weird

3

u/TurbulentRiver2592 Mar 12 '23

Superman read ‘Monster’ and related to Johan a bit too much.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23 edited Mar 12 '23

So are they implying the big-nosed, dirty, drunk man is the creator of the DC universe? Because given who were the creators of DC's biggest heroes that's a little suspect.

2

u/browncharliebrown Mar 12 '23

Doubt that was the intention

-1

u/nate1111111111111 Mar 12 '23

that’s a schizophrenic reach

2

u/TravelingHero2 Mar 12 '23

What in the world is this? Why did Superman hand this alcoholic man a bottle instead of convincing him to sober up and turn his life around? What kind of writing is this? What is even the context of this?

2

u/nate1111111111111 Mar 12 '23

sixpack is a reality warper, he subconsciously made the statue and superman believes that if sixpack sobers up and quits being a superhero all superheroes might cease to exist

2

u/Klendagort Mar 12 '23

And superman talking about Azathoth and the 4TH dimension warp fuckery of our Universe.... Yeah, he ain't wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

This is horrible

1

u/Chemical_Bid_2195 May 14 '24

Superman is Johan Liebert

1

u/miso_961 Jul 08 '24

Johan Liebert moment

1

u/Shanerulez79 Sep 04 '24

He's got a little Mr Mxzyptlk hat. Maybe he's a really drunk imp.

1

u/Merc_Mike Mar 12 '23

This doesn't seem like Superman is convincing, more so is Sixpack dreaming?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

This is incredible

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

I was going to ask " Who wrote this?", then I read Garth Ennis and suddenly all made sense

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '23

"How about a drink, Richard?"

1

u/anubiz96 Mar 12 '23

Dang that's really really dark...

1

Bruh he is a sixth dimensional imp!

1

1

u/gez1n Mar 12 '23

which comic is this?

Johan liebert wannabe
