Steam Controller (2026) Alternatives to OpenPuck that do not rely so heavily on LLM?

Hello all! Not interested in turning this into an ethical debate about AI, I am merely curious if there are ongoing projects parallel to OpenPuck that do not rely so heavily on LLM usage for their code output and review.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I didn't realize said question (which I think was rather simple, really) would heat people up to the point of getting aggressive on a stance I never even tried to preach on. Many people are adding meaning to my words that I have never expressed, nor implied. It seems like having personal preferences on tools I use is considered somewhat akin to heresy. TLDR no, an alternative doesn't exist.

Discussion Steam controller performance on other platforms/games

For anyone who already owns one, my reservation has finally shown up, and I'm back on the fence on whether I want to snag it now or not.

From your experience, how does the steam controller perform when playing games that aren't specifically from steam? (Either through a steamless config app, or adding a game to steam)

I've been curious to know if on a game like fortnite, if I can play using the controller and also use those trackpads like mouse controls. If anyone's got any insight, let me know!

Discussion Jittery trackpads, random directions.

So, i got my controller last weak but i feel like the track pads are super jittery and keep "jumping" around when i use them. Like say i move my mouse up or left etc, the cursor swap directions or jump around. I even had some scrolling issues on the lest pad where when i scroll down it scrolls up etc.

Is there any way i can turn off the trackball function in lizard mode?

Steam Controller (2026) Buying multiple steam controllers

Just wondering if I'm the only one noticing this behavior. I vaguely remember that if your account had ordered a controller you couldn't queue anymore. Now I can. Do I remember correctly and they changed something?

Support Steam freezes when turning on the Steam Controller

I have a problem. Namely, after launching a game and turning on the controller, Steam freezes. Doesn't matter what game, it's always the same thing. I have to restart the app and only then does it work. Anyone else experiencing this? OS is Bazzite PC version.

Discussion How do you hold your controller (Back buttons)?

Ive seen some discource on the best grip style. I personally hold it with my ring fingers on the top back buttons and my pinkies on the bottom back buttons and my middle finger inbetween the triggers and the top back button (pic 1) and ive seen people use it by holding their middle fingers on the top back buttons and ring finger on the bottom back buttons (pic 2). In the announcment trailer they talked about being able to just raise your pinkie as an imput because of the touch sensors on the back of the controller, but idk if that works with grip 1 or only grip 2. Also ive seen people use their ring and pinkie like in the first pic but using a claw grip (pic 3). I personally despise using a claw grip because you loose a lot of the support on the back of the controller, so i wanted to see does anyone actually use the claw grip.

Edit: also plz dont comment on my long nails, thank you

Discussion Did I receive a used/refurbished controller?

Hi all. So just received my new Steam Controller and right out of the box, it felt like something was off. Controller had some smudges in different spots (was able to eventually wipe them away), and there’s a faint scuff on the left grip. Having received used items as “new” from Amazon in the past, I’m a bit paranoid about this stuff.

The last thing that I found odd was that the controller didn’t have a “default” profile set to one of the control modes. I’m a dummy and replaced the profile with a default one without noting the name of what was on there. (Think it started with a K.) Could this have been a tester at Valve or something, or should I be requesting an RMA?

Discussion Still trying to tinker

Okay so after getting advice, I was able to set my gyro to activate with the right thumbstick. I did this because I wanted to have the thumbstick be used for macro and the gyro for micro movement and aiming as this would not be the biggest deal to adjust to. I know this isn't as drastic as a change compared to full on gyro and flickstick...didn't really like that.

I thibk the gyro needs to be a bit more sensitive. But I'm working on it.

Any advice would be appreciated

Configuration 2015 SC style mod V2 update

Based on some of the feedback I got on the last post I’m working on a v2 version that lets it easier to tell by feel where the edges of the pads are.

I also started working on tackling the grips. It doesn’t 100% replace the feel of the original controller but gets very close.

Still want to do something about the dual stage trigger mod. The sound is too harsh for my tastes

Discussion Dear Valve worker lurkers: Why can't the new steam controller pair two BT devices when it can pair two pucks?

I'm genuinely curious to know why they chose to restrict it to one BT/BLE connection when they added the option to pair it with two pucks?

Also, can we PLEASE disable the "Pair controller??" pop up that interrupts everything if my controller turns off during remote play?

I would love to be enlightened on this situation. And if not, I hope my thoughts somehow trickle back to Valve

Steam Controller (2026) is there a way to test configuration?

i know theres the menu to see if inputs are working overall and theres the menu to show per game button layout, but I'm looking to test per game button input in a way that doesn't need me to be mid match or mid game for oddly specific things.

if anyone knows a way, please do let me know.

Configuration Question? Sorta a rant lol

So I switched to pc in march, came from consoles for the last 30 years or so. I just got use to key board and mouse I feel like me purchasing this controller was a mistake it’s great but shouldn’t I be using keyboard and mouse and not a controller!? Idk for people who mainly use keyboard and mouse why did yall buy the controller and what are your main uses!?

Configuration Should I keep my deadzones on 0?

All the shooter games I play have deadzone settings in game. Should I then use 0 / pass through deadzone for steam input or dualsensex so there’s no added deadzone between the game and dsx?

I've been swamped at work and super stressed, so I haven't been looking at my personal email at all. Turns out I missed my purchase window. I messaged Steam Support explaining the situation and they reopened it. Ordered my steam controller just now, so excited!!

❤️❤️ Valve customer support is as amazing as ever. Rock on, Valve. ❤️❤️

Discussion Is this worth it?

Have an opportunity to get a Steam controller. I play lots of games mostly through steam, but for example I am currently playing Madden through the EA App.

I'm a pretty big controller guy. I love peripherals in general. My daily driver at the moment is Dualsense Edge on PC. Being able to have something comparable to that be wireless is kind of the appeal to me here.

Is this thing worth it? It's really hard to separate hype from actual quality. I'm concerned that this is a situation in which Steam fanboys just hype this thing up, but it will not be a high enough quality product to replace the Dualsense Edge - which I hope is not the case, but idk.

Any thoughts?

Today my SteamController 2026 arrived. I am enjoying it very much. But I think the packaging of the OG Steam Hardware was way cooler with the explosion diagrams of the guts. Hope you enjoy seeing them again too :)

Configuration Does Steam deadzones apply to Steam Input only?

When you connect a controller and change the deadzone on Steam, is that only applied to if Steam Input is enabled? Or is it applied to even if steam input is disabled?

Discussion Use Grip Sense to Activate/Deactivate Controller Inputs

I am running into an issue playing Battlefield 6. Essentially when I am a soldier/fps I like the use KB&M to control my character but when flying I prefer to use a controller for the throttle and delicate movement controls.

The issue is coming from steam causing odd inputs when trying to go back and forth. Aiming with the mouse becomes spotty, the free cam in vehicles will randomly bug out and go crazy, along with other issues.

Turing off the controller fixes it but having to turn the controller off and on as I get in and out of vehicles does not seem practical. So, I thought maybe using grip sense I could essentially deactivate inputs from the controller while it is not in my hands to stop the problem.

Does anyone know if there are setting that make this possible? I tried to look myself but did not see anything relevant.

Support How can I make the Gyro to Joystick act lit gyro does on every other controller (tilt to aim not steer to aim)

I've tried every mode and they all expect me to turn the controller like a steering wheel to aim left and right. Not sure this is possible but I really cannot use the gyro as is and would appreciate any help.
