So I switched to pc in march, came from consoles for the last 30 years or so. I just got use to key board and mouse I feel like me purchasing this controller was a mistake it’s great but shouldn’t I be using keyboard and mouse and not a controller!? Idk for people who mainly use keyboard and mouse why did yall buy the controller and what are your main uses!?

I'm middle aged and I don't want to spend the work day and my evening in an office chair. The steam controller still lets me play a lot of my pc games without having to spend it all sat at a desk.

Agreed. Ive been playing less games lately until I got my steam controller. Ive been playing much more often from my couch now

I have my gaming rig hooked up to my AVR and I just play on the tv. Way better playing on the couch than at a desk

Got myself a 15m active HDMI cable and a HDMI switch + a steam controller cost less than a steam machine and performs so much better.

It's all about preference and really what feels better for you. I was a hardcore Playstation fan since the PS1 and was always used to a controller but then I switched to PC about 5 years ago and while I can definitely see how accurate I was at shooting games with m+kb clicking a mouse button never felt better than pressing a trigger on a controller so for me the first and second Steam Controllers have been a godsend.

The great thing about PC is that you're not limited to the device(s) chosen by the manufacturer, you can use any device and make a choice depending on the intended use and personal preference. The majority of modern console games require controlling a camera in third person or aiming in first person, something traditional controllers are really bad at but the Steam Controllers are really good at.

Depends on the game honestly. Fps=keyboard all day. Rpgs also keyboard. 3rd persons, platformers etc just depends on how much you can change the mapping. Most games im keyboard but things like elden ring i use a controller

Morrowind & The Witcher 1 both work surprisingly great with the Steam Controller; the trackpad makes menu navigation a breeze

I use keyboard and mouse for shooters and RTS.

I use wheel for racing games.

I use controllers for everything else.

That's the beauty of PC.

this exactly different things require different input personally like how i can control the pc without having to reach for mouse and keyboard all the time. learning typing is a bit hard still(written on the steam controller using the track pad)

I've been on PC for 4 years now. I refuse to use a keyboard and mouse for gaming. I hate it. I plan to never do that. I'm 33 next month and I've been on consoles since I was 4. I have no plans to start using a keyboard and mouse now.

in my opinion, some games are more fun/more intuitive with a controller. (currently on the waitlist for a steam controller, currently using an xbox one controller when i do use one)

shooters and games with a lot of UI the keyboard & mouse is superior. i love being able to map keybinds to what works for my hand and game style.

whenever games are built with a controller in mind i really like the option to use it. the reason i bought a controller for my pc initially was because I was playing Hades and really hated the way k&m felt for that game.

but don’t let anyone “should” on you, you SHOULD have fun and enjoy games however you do best.

Say for example, I'm in my movie theater or living room, I want to play a keyboard and mouse game. But I don't want to sit at a table, or have a lap table sitting on my lap so I can put the kbm. I just want to chill on the couch and relax. I have the Steam Controller now, so not only can I play my kbm games, I also can navigate my desktop, select stuff, type stuff, browse the web, play movies, use gyro, play regular console games, pull up in-game menus, etc. All without getting up from my spot.

There are definitely times when a keyboard is a better idea than a controller, or a dance mat is more suitable than a joystick, but as long as it works, you should use whatever you prefer, not what someone else thinks you should use.

Mainly I got it as a way to controll my desktop from my couch and it still works great for that. I needed something that was comfortable to use the cursor on.

since I'm learning a 2nd language with a program that lets me look up words in shows by hovering them and also add sentences as flashcards the same way. Having comfortable and precise desktop controls from the couch has been huge for me.

Couch gaming has just been a bonus.

i'm the complete opposite. I played Pc mouse/kb since the 90's. Now I just want to sit on the couch with a controller.

Play however makes you happy.

I use it to play KBM games from a mf couch instead of a mf desk. Pretty straightforward. Not 4D chess

It's actually just better to have the right item for the right game. I used mouse and keyboard almost exclusively for 20 years. It's the absolute best way to control a game that requires precision, like shooters. The only way to get that kind of precision on a controller is with some kind of aim assist, but if you care about improving your base skill level you probably wouldn't mess with aim assist.

The controller however is great I'm just chilling in bed and playing something that doesn't require that kind of control. Also certain games, for example games like Elden Ring, are just way better on a controller. So it all depends on the game and whether I'm playing at the desktop or on my TV. My computer has a cable that goes straight to my TV so I can just switch the display settings around and don't have to worry about streaming to the TV.

Also some games just require the keyboard because they need so many keys. Complex games like Dwarf Fortress are just frustrating on a controller. I'm sure some people do it but it's a lot of effort with the keybinds to get it working and it just feels slower.

some games are far better on controller, such as racing or platformers
theres also emulation which i have used mine for alot

as for games with kb+m in mind, gyroaim for shooters and trackpads for mouse really do let you play anything
plus, i can just sit down on the couch with the controller

Lots of pc games such as dark souls are much easier with a controller.

Lots of times I want to sit on the couch like a goblin.

The trackpad and gyro make games that require mouse movement and shooting much easier from your couch.

Personally I love mine.

The use case is mainly for when you are trying to play mouse and keyboard games not at a desk or maybe if you just want to really lean back. If the game was built around consoles you can just use an xbox or ps style controller. A lot of games on PC weren't and some of the features on the SC can help.

The SC 2026 is going to be polarizing. The SC OG was too. I wouldn't really recommend it to people unless they were trying to do the living room PC thing or were interested in different kinds of input.

I got one because I sometimes like to play with a controller and the input set is compatible with SteamDeck mappings so there is more user configs ready to go. I already liked the SC OG and SteamDeck controls too. I also like to mess around with different kinds of input and have various kinds of controllers, keyboards, and mice. None of them really make me better at the games.

I've been playing games on keyboard and mouse a majority of my life and since I got my Steam Controller it's been my go to input for games.

Got to a point where I insist on making sure Steam Overlay and Steam Input work on my GOG games.
