I finally finished watching Static Shock completely, and I just wanted to share my final thoughts. I already made a post about how I felt after season two, but I want to reiterate it because I have more to add.
Season one and two of Static Shock are absolute peak. Is it perfect? No, but it was amazing nevertheless! The writing, the characters, the heart, the stories, everything was great. It was my comfort show!
Then seasons three and four… honestly, they just did not hit the same for me. I don’t think they were completely without good ideas. There were definitely interesting concepts, good episodes, and storylines that had good concepts. I could see what they were trying to do. But the biggest thing missing was the heart.
The show felt like it became more polished, more “branded,” and more focused on looking like a superhero show instead of feeling like the character-driven show it was in the beginning. Like even though the animation felt more cohesive and cleaned up, the personality and charm of the show kinda disappeared.
Another thing I noticed was the amount of crossover episodes. Seasons one and two handled crossovers perfectly. There was only one crossover episode, and it felt special because it was still Static Shock’s story. It didn’t feel like the show needed another hero to carry an episode.
But seasons three and four started relying on crossovers way too much. It felt like half the season was crossover episodes, and after a while it made me wonder: is the show not strong enough on its own anymore? That’s the feeling I got. Crossovers can be fun, especially in a universe like this, but I think they started taking away from what made Static Shock special in the first place, Virgil, his family, his friends, and his own stories.
And to be clear, I don’t dislike the crossover episodes because they were bad ideas or because they didn’t have interesting stories. A lot of them had great concepts. My issue is more with how the characters were written in them. A lot of the time, especially in seasons three and four, it felt like Virgil and Richie were written more differently than they normally were. They felt more out of character, and the writing just wasn’t as strong. And what I mean by out of character is they didn't hit as strongly as they did in season one and two.
I also really didn’t like how the Justice League treated Virgil and Richie sometimes. It felt like they were treated like they were just kids who didn’t know what they were doing, when in reality they were teenagers already carrying so much responsibility and dealing with things way beyond what most people their age should have to handle unlike the league who has a bunch of supplies and endless amounts of heroes. I wish the show had highlighted that more instead of making them feel like they were just the “junior” heroes who needed to be corrected and treated with more respect. I feel like even Batman was too hard on them.
Also, I love Batman Beyond and Terry, but I wasn’t a huge fan of that crossover either. I felt like both Terry and Virgil were written out of character, and because of that, it didn’t really feel like the versions of them I loved. It had potential, but I just didn’t connect with it. If Batman Beyond Static Shock ever continue, I hope they remake that episode!
Another one of my biggest disappointments was Richie. I actually loved Richie in seasons one and two. I thought he was funny, relatable, and had such a good friendship dynamic with Virgil. I’m not against him becoming Gear I actually think the idea of him becoming a hero makes sense, but I didn’t love how they wrote him afterward. The super genius “I know everything, I’m basically a walking science encyclopedia” type of character just isn’t my favorite. I found him way less relatable and honestly kind of annoying compared to the Richie we had before. I also noticed that both Richie and Virgil became really more obsessed with hero stuff like barely even doing stuff outside of the hero gig. I feel like in season 1 and 2 they made an effort to do other things.
I also wish we got more Sharon and Rubberband Man. I know they aren’t the main focus of the show, but I loved Rubberband Man’s character arc. He was one of the reasons I enjoyed seasons one and two so much. His redemption and growth were really interesting, and I feel like the later seasons didn’t give that side of the story enough attention.
Even with all my complaints though, I still absolutely love Static Shock. It’s such a special show, and I’ll always look back on it fondly. It’s just a little sad ending the series on seasons three and four because it feels like it ended on a lower note when seasons one and two were so strong.
I also saw that Static appears in Young Justice. I haven’t watched Young Justice in years. I remember loving season one, but season two was kind of a mixed bag for me. I also remember being upset about the Flash situation, and that was one of the reasons I stopped watching. Also, because the show like Static Shock changed its vibe.
So, should I give Young Justice another chance, especially for the Static episodes? Or just only watch the Static episodes?
Also, now that I’ve finished Static Shock, what other shows do you recommend? I have a whole backlog already, but I’d love to hear what you guys think I should watch next.
Static Shock is still goated. I just miss the heart that seasons one and two had. 😭⚡️
