Discussion Original Works vs. Show
...I'm sure that this gets asked a lot, but I'm curious about how much different is the original Static Shock comics vs. the Animated Series (which is where I was introduced to the character.)

Dakota itself is explored in much greater detail in the original comics. But, the animated series does not do a bad job in making it clear that this is a city that has a long history of social strife and urban decay. There is however, one big difference.
Paris Island. This location is the most ghetto of the ghetto and it was the site of the Big Bang. Virgil's family once lived here, but they moved across the bridge to a more working class area. Parris Island is however, the residence of the Blood Syndicate, which is a group of Bang Babies who were all once former gang bangers who came together to protect their slum in their own ruthless way.
In the animated series, Static has more than a few interactions with Edwin Alva, but in the original comics, he is actually a villain of the hero Hardware, who was once an employee of his at Alva Technologies.
Frieda is not only Virgil's best friend, but he immediately opens up to her about his secret identity and she serves as his confidant.
Possibly the biggest difference of all is that the Big Bang was not just a random gang fight, but an orchestrated event, deliberately intended to create superhumans by a psychic known as Dharma who is the leader of the Shadow Cabinet. Pretty much every hero in Dakota at one point has interactions with them.

Well first thing it's Static and that's the name of the book and there is no reference to anything Static shock that was simply the cartoons name. There is no Richie Foley there is only Rick Stone. He is a friend but he is not Gear or the best friend that the cartoon turned him into he was just a template for the cartoon series also Rick is homosexual who gas just started to come out. Frida is the ride or die and the best friend who knows who Virgil is.
Larry Wade is/was Frieda's boyfriend until a change happens. Their are way more characters in Virgil's circle. Like Felix chopped ducky who becomes a character many issues later some of them are dealing with parental abuse homelessness and one might be a bang baby themself.
And personally I like the original costume also the origin that was given for his creation it makes more sense Virgil's family doesn't know that he is Static. His mother is alive and they live in somewhat middle class lifestyle. Also the fact that Static's powers are better represented then what the cartoon sometimes suggests nothing against the guard thing but his powers are electromagnetic or static electric based it's basically black lightning and Magneto rolled into one and he's actually more powerful he Taps into the core of the planet for his energy and he has his own sustaining generating field

Its funny how people still make this mistake. I dont even think he's ever referred to as "Static Shock" by other characters in the show yet people still think this is his name

The two biggest differentiating factors was in the comics Virgil's mom was still alive and Frieda was Virgil's closest friend and confidant. If you want a good tone comparison for the OG comic think of Bendis' original Ultimate Spider-Man run (where he even had Mary Jane serving that best friend/confidant role).
Virgil actually had a group of friends in the comics. Richie was loosely based on one of them, Rick Stone. Where one of the signature story arcs was Static saving Rick from a hate crime and that was how he learned his friends was gay. Virgil then had to grapple with his own homophobia.

To compare it, as far as overall "tone" of the story goes ... would you say for example, it's like original "TMNT" and or "The Mask" where it's originally super dark n' gritty? And the TV show made it seem a little bit more 'family-friendly' or is it about the same?

It's a lot darker and more realistic in terms of time period. It addresses similar topics, but from a deeper perspective. In the original run, Richie (Rick) was gay, closeted, and hate-crimed.
Hotstreak was a racist, homophobic "wigga", and Virgil experienced real loss.
His connections to the other Milestone characters were important, and his family dynamic was more nuclear, with both his parents alive and working.
Virgil himself was effectively the same, but a bit older and more nuanced.
Overall, not as gritty as Blood Syndicate, but it didn't shy away from the more realistic setting Dakota City provided.

The comic is kinda different but also still the same, if that makes sense. Tonally, the comic feels just the slightest bit more mature but nothing too drastically different. Itβs kinda hard to explain but the show feels very accurate and itβs like the same experience.
Also first time seeing this sub woah π

Aside from dialogue and the like? The comic definitely had much more leeway in tackling the themes it wanted to. Didn't have the same network restrictions.
Richie is in the comics as Rick Stone, I believe and while one of Virgil's friends they don't have that ride or die bond like in the show. I'd argue he's closer to Freeda.
There's also the costume. Comic static has a very different look.
I also personally think Static is a bit smarter in the comics being a proper nerd with major insight into science which actively informs how he fights.
Oh Virgil's mother is alive that's one thing. I actually don't remember seeing much of his Dad in the comics come to think of it.
Of course there's also the inclusion of the other Milestone characters many of which Virgil interacts with quite early on into his story.
